Emergency Medicine
Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine
Since the establishment of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, the Department of Emergency Medicine has brought together emergency medicine specialists and management professionals from China and the United States. Based on the American management model and adapted to China's national conditions, the department has achieved remarkable results in academic development and has also played an extremely strong role in emergency services. The Department of Emergency Medicine currently has more than 40 physicians, including 5 with senior professional titles. Many have studied abroad, and more than 66% hold doctoral or master's degrees.
The Department of Emergency Medicine (Qingchun Campus) comprises the emergency resuscitation room, emergency observation room, emergency consultation rooms, emergency wards, emergency intensive care unit, and other areas. It houses several national centers, including the Advanced Stroke Center, Advanced Chest Pain Center, and Demonstration Center for the Emergency Treatment Fast Track for Acute Upper Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage. The department is equipped with bedside ultrasound, CRRT machines, ECMO machines, a 5G+AR system, ventilators, bronchoscopes, gastroscopes, urodynamic monitors, cerebral oxygen monitors, and other equipment. It routinely performs critical care ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, blood purification, ECMO, 5G+AR cloud-based emergency care, mechanical ventilation, bronchoscopic-guided bedside percutaneous tracheostomy, gastroscopic-guided bedside percutaneous gastrostomy, dynamic intra-abdominal pressure monitoring, dynamic brain function monitoring, and other procedures. In addition to treating patients with various acute and critical illnesses, the department also undertakes medical support for major conferences and events. The department has a comprehensive simulation-based teaching system and is also a standardized residency training base for emergency medicine in Zhejiang Province.
Technical Advantages
The Department of Emergency Medicine has established an emergency MDT (Multi-disciplinary Team, a multidisciplinary integrated diagnosis and treatment model) with the distinctive characteristics of Shaw Hospital. The emergency MDT consists of emergency physicians, nurses, relevant specialists, respiratory therapists, an acute pain treatment team, dietitians, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, and other members, who jointly participate in daily patient management.
The Department of Emergency Medicine took the lead in independently developing a national collaborative platform for 5G+AR cloud-based emergency care. By empowering prehospital emergency care with 5G+AR technology, which represents the highest communication efficiency, it overcomes the limitations of cumbersome routine online consultation data transmission and poor signal stability. Primary-level physicians wear mobile AR devices to connect remotely with provincial medical experts. Patient information is transmitted to the provincial consultation platform via the 5G network, enabling provincial medical experts to make assessments from the “first-person perspective” and provide treatment guidance through real-time annotation, screen sharing, and other functions, thereby enabling the dynamic extension of provincial emergency medical resources to county-level areas.
The Department of Emergency Medicine has developed a rapid recovery approach for acute and critical illnesses characterized by minimally invasive surgery. For eligible patients with neurocritical illness, minimally invasive techniques represented by PENlIGhT (Percutaneous ENdoscopIc Gastrostomy and Tracheostomy) are performed, namely bronchoscopic-guided percutaneous tracheostomy combined with gastroscopic-guided percutaneous gastrostomy. By establishing two lifelines—the airway and nutrition—this approach lays a solid foundation for the outcomes of critically ill patients, greatly shortens ICU length of stay, makes rapid recovery possible for critically ill patients, and facilitates the transfer of such patients to community hospitals and rehabilitation institutions or their return home.
The department has established a problem-oriented, goal-directed management system. In combination with its disciplinary characteristics, it relies on the EICU (Emergency Intensive Care Unit) daily checklist, such as the checklist and Daily goals, to implement problem-oriented, goal-directed management, maximizing the effectiveness of medical care and patient safety.

Research Achievements
In 2020, 2021, and 2022, the department ranked fifth, fourth, and fifth nationwide, respectively, among emergency medicine specialties in the China Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM). The Department of Emergency Medicine has carried out a series of studies focusing primarily on precision diagnosis and treatment of sepsis and 5G+AR technology. In recent years, the department has been committed to research on precision diagnosis and treatment of acute and critical illnesses, including sepsis, septic shock, and sepsis complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS),
and has explored the application value of new artificial intelligence algorithms in the field of acute and critical care. In the early stage, the department primarily used electronic medical records and large-scale genomics data in healthcare and applied machine-learning algorithms to research risk stratification, disease phenotyping, and causal inference. More than 50 long-form articles resulting from this series of original research were published as first-author or corresponding-author papers in authoritative journals, including Intensive Care Med (IF = 41.79), Crit Care (IF = 19.36), E Clinical Medicine (IF =17.03), and NPJ Digit Med (IF = 15.4). The series of studies has been cited by multiple international guidelines. Based on the above research, the department has received support from multiple National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and key research and development programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, obtained 4 invention patents, and received 1 first prize in a provincial medical sci
ence and technology award. The department participated in compiling the Chinese Standardized Training Textbook for Emergency Medicine (People's Medical Publishing House), General Practice (People's Medical Publishing House), and the Chinese Trauma Care Course CTCT-B. It publishes two professional academic journals: Journal of Emergency and Critical CareMedicine and General Practice Clinical Education.
