Since Professor Xu Dongliang joined the department in November 2020, it has flourished under the leadership of Director Xu Dongliang, the new-generation discipline leader, and has now developed into a professionally specialized discipline integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research that enjoys a high reputation in China. The Department of Urology adheres to a development objective focused on medical technology and medical quality, combining scientific research with clinical practice, and has formed excellent medical traditions and a rigorous academic atmosphere. The entire department is sincerely united and strives for progress; its personnel continue to work hard and constantly reach for new heights. They have developed a number of highly challenging new technologies and projects, particularly in minimally invasive urological technologies such as da Vinci robotic, single-port, and 3D laparoscopic surgery, as well as in urological tumors, stones, and comprehensive integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment in andrology. Medical technology and academic standards have advanced by leaps and bounds and developed rapidly, reaching internationally advanced and domestically leading levels, earning high recognition from peers and praise from patients.
The department currently has a rational personnel structure and strong technical capabilities, and all personnel have postgraduate-level qualifications. There are 2 chief physicians, 7 associate chief physicians, and 4 attending physicians, as well as numerous graduate students, visiting trainees, standardized residency trainees, and others. It has 60 open beds divided between East and West campuses. It mainly consists of 6 subspecialties: urological tumors, urinary calculi and urinary tract repair and reconstruction, prostate diseases, female and pediatric urology, andrology, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine urology. It has functional units including a urology ward, outpatient clinic, andrology examination and treatment room, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy room, and urodynamic examination room. It possesses a wide range of high-end, cutting-edge instruments and equipment, including the latest-generation da Vinci Xi surgical robot, Olympus 3D laparoscope, thulium laser, holmium laser, plasma resectoscope, nephroscope, flexible/rigid ureteroscopes, flexible cystoscope, BK ultrasound, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter, urodynamic testing instrument, male function testing instrument, and others.
Diagnostic and treatment services cover all diseases in urology. All types of urological and andrological surgery are routinely performed, including ① robotic and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery: vena cava tumor thrombus removal, radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy for renal cancer, radical surgery for renal pelvis and ureteral cancer, adrenal tumor resection, retroperitoneal tumor resection, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular cancer, inguinal lymph node dissection for penile cancer, pyeloureteroplasty, bladder-flap/intestinal ureteral replacement for ureteral stricture, and urethra-preserving prostatectomy; ② minimally invasive surgery for urinary calculi: percutaneous nephrolithotomy with lithotripsy and stone extraction, flexible/rigid ureteroscopic lithotripsy, bladder stone lithotripsy, and others; ③ transurethral minimally invasive surgery: laser/plasma prostate enucleation, transurethral laser en bloc resection of bladder tumors, urethral stricture reconstruction, and others; ④ female and pediatric urological surgery: TVT, TVT-O, pelvic floor reconstruction, sacral neuromodulation, pediatric congenital ureteral stricture reconstruction, megaureter reconstruction, nephrectomy of a nonfunctioning duplicated kidney, hypospadias repair, circumcision, reconstructive and plastic surgery for penile deformities, orchiopexy for undescended testis, and others; ⑤ andrology: surgery for Peyronie's disease, penile correction surgery, three-piece penile prosthesis implantation, seminal vesiculoscopy, high ligation of varicocele, testicular biopsy, microscopic testicular sperm extraction, and others. The department has established a model with robotic, 3D laparoscopic, single-port, and other minimally invasive surgeries as its technical core, and comprehensive integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment and Traditional Chinese Medicine Rapid-Recovery Surgery (CM-ERAS) as its diagnostic and treatment features. It was the first in Shanghai to perform fourth-generation da Vinci robotic single-port laparoscopic surgery, including robot-assisted procedures at internationally advanced and domestically leading levels such as radical cystectomy + orthotopic ileal neobladder and radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. It is particularly at an internationally leading level in radical cystectomy with an orthotopic neobladder, urinary continence preservation during radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, and nephron-sparing treatment of renal tumors. It also makes full use of the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, forming a novel combined treatment represented by modified Shenqi Dihuang Decoction together with targeted drugs, immune checkpoint inhibitors (PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors), antibody-drug conjugates (ADC), and other adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatments, as well as rational combinations of surgery and drugs, to maximize the cure rate of urological tumors and significantly prolong patient survival and improve patients' quality of life.
In recent years, the discipline has developed comprehensively in medical care, education, and research. It closely follows the most cutting-edge trends in scientific and technological development in China and abroad, starts from actual clinical needs, takes clinical problems as its guide, and focuses its research on the early diagnosis of urological tumors, integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment, and improvements in surgical techniques; the integrated Chinese and Western medicine prevention and treatment of urinary calculi; and exploration of the mechanisms of action of traditional Chinese medicine in urinary diseases. It undertakes more than ten national- and provincial-/ministerial-level projects and has more than ten invention patents. It has published nearly 200 papers in various academic journals, including more than 40 SCI papers in European Urology, World J Urology, Urology, and other journals with the greatest influence in the field of urology.
The Department of Urology has consistently upheld the spirit of “Great Medical Virtue, the Dawn of Life” and the service philosophy of “Pursuing Perfection · Virtue Throughout the World,” highlighting the departmental features of “minimally invasive and personalized care, with equal emphasis on Chinese and Western medicine.” It remains people-oriented and does everything possible to provide every patient with the most optimized and highest-quality diagnostic and treatment services.
