Urology
I. Department Overview
In 2005, An Kang became Director of the Department of Urology and comprehensively launched minimally invasive urological surgery, establishing an advanced department characterized by transurethral prostate surgery and diversified minimally invasive procedures for urinary system tumors, stones, and other conditions. The department currently has 45 open beds, 8 physicians, all of whom hold master's degrees or higher, and 13 nursing staff members, making it a mature diagnostic and treatment center integrating clinical care, scientific research, and teaching. The Department of Urology was the first in the province to perform a number of highly complex operations and introduce new technologies. Its transurethral plasma electroc resection of the prostate and electroc resection of bladder tumors are at the leading domestic level. Since 2010, the department has newly introduced minimally invasive urological procedures including transurethral plasma enucleation of the prostate, transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy, retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy, retroperitoneoscopic radical nephrectomy for renal cancer, retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy, retroperitoneoscopic radical ureterectomy for ureteral cancer, percutaneous nephrolithotomy and lithotomy, ureteroscopic pneumatic ballistic lithotripsy and stone extraction, and flexible ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy and stone extraction.
II. New Technologies Introduced
1. Prostate surgery: Transurethral plasma electroc resection of the prostate in the Department of Urology has consistently remained at the leading domestic level. After the introduction of a new-generation American Gyrus plasma generator and plasma cutting system in 2012, transurethral plasma enucleation of the prostate (TUKEP) was launched, further enhancing transurethral surgery and allowing more complete removal of the prostate. At present, the annual number of TUKEP operations exceeds 200, and papers on BPH have been published in national and provincial journals. TUKEP combined with endocrine therapy has good efficacy for patients with advanced prostate cancer, helping to improve urinary symptoms and prolong life.
2. Bladder cancer surgery: Treatment mainly focuses on transurethral electroc resection of bladder tumors for cases of superficial bladder cancer. For patients with invasive bladder cancer, partial cystectomy and radical cystectomy with ureterocutaneostomy are performed, and all patients recover well after surgery. Depending on the different sites and pathological types, we also use methods such as local intravesical chemotherapy and intravenous systemic chemotherapy in combination, achieving good results, greatly prolonging patients' lives, and improving their quality of life.
3. Renal cancer surgery: We mainly use radical nephrectomy for the treatment of renal cancer. We have accumulated systematic experience in operating on giant renal cancers and can directly ligate the renal arteries and veins to prevent the spread of tumor thrombi. For early-stage renal cancer, nephron-sparing partial nephrectomy is performed. Since 2015, the Department of Urology has independently completed several retroperitoneoscopic radical nephrectomies for renal cancer and retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomies, with minimal trauma, rapid recovery, and definite efficacy.
4. Adrenal surgery: Since 2010, nearly 100 adrenal operations have been completed, including operations for Cushing's syndrome, primary hyperaldosteronism, and pheochromocytoma. Our department has mature laparoscopic adrenalectomy techniques and good results.
5. Urinary tract stone surgery: In 2016, the Department of Urology acquired a pneumatic ballistic lithotripsy system, changing the previous situation in which open surgery was used to treat urinary tract stones. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy and lithotomy and ureteroscopic lithotripsy and stone extraction were introduced, making stone treatment fully minimally invasive, with significant results. In 2018, flexible ureteroscopy and a holmium laser emitter were introduced, and flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy was launched, rapidly bringing our hospital's minimally invasive stone treatment into alignment with the international leading level.
6. Other procedures: The Department of Urology has also made breakthroughs in the treatment of uncommon and rare diseases. Multiple pyeloureteroplasty procedures have been performed for severe hydronephrosis of the kidney; the department once independently completed resection of giant hydronephrosis in a duplex kidney. It has also completed the diagnosis and surgical treatment of rare diseases such as bladder sarcoma, testicular non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma, renal oncocytoma, giant seminal vesicle schwannoma, and cystic renal cell carcinoma.
