Plastic Surgery
| Department Overview |--------------
The Department of Plastic Surgery at Huashan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University began operating in 2004 with Drs. Wu Jianming and Wu Baojin. To further improve the hospital’s disciplines and promote their comprehensive development, and taking the centenary of Huashan Hospital’s founding as an opportunity, the hospital officially established the Department of Plastic Surgery in 2007. Under the successive leadership of the renowned plastic surgery experts Professor Jiang Hua and Professor Mu Xiongzheng, it gradually developed a medical team specializing in facial contouring, oculoplastic surgery, breast plastic surgery, excision and reconstruction of body-surface tumors, scar plastic surgery, and minimally invasive treatment of axillary osmidrosis.
The current head of the department is Wu Baojin. The team currently has 11 professional clinical physicians and 3 part-time chief physicians. Relying on the Main Hospital, the Department of Plastic Surgery coordinates integrated development across the Pudong, Hongqiao, and Baoshan campuses in a “one body, three wings” model. Each campus offers a variety of outpatient services, and the Main Hospital also offers general outpatient and specialized-disease outpatient services on Saturdays. The inpatient ward primarily admits patients undergoing ERAS rapid-recovery day surgery at the Pudong Campus. The department sees more than 20,000 outpatient visits and performs nearly 10,000 surgeries annually. A new independent plastic surgery outpatient area and dedicated laminar-flow purification operating rooms have been established on the fourth floor of the Main Hospital’s outpatient building. The environment is elegant, the layout is sophisticated, and the facilities are fully equipped. There are 3 operating rooms in total, comprising Class I specially clean operating rooms (Class 100) and Class II standard clean operating rooms (Class 1,000). They are equipped with a range of high-quality medical equipment, including electric operating tables, a water-powered liposuction machine, a radiofrequency electrosurgical unit, bipolar coagulation, central oxygen supply, negative-pressure suction, an imported German water-jet knife, an electric dermatome, and an SVF fat-gel extraction device, providing people seeking aesthetic enhancement with a good medical experience and surgical outcomes. The Department of Plastic Surgery implements refined and standardized management, protects patients’ rights, respects personal privacy, adheres to a people-oriented and patient-centered approach, and, guided by the philosophy of “striving for excellence and pursuing perfection,” provides individualized design and human-centered care, as well as high-quality diagnosis and treatment that are more minimally invasive, safe, and effective.
| Specialty Features |--------------
The treatment scope of the Department of Plastic Surgery mainly involves trauma, disease, and congenital or acquired defects and deformities of tissues or organs including the skin, muscles, and bones. Treatment comprises two major areas: reconstructive repair and organ reconstruction. The principal approach is the surgical transplantation of various autologous tissues; allogeneic or xenogeneic tissues, or tissue substitutes, may also be used to repair tissue defects or deformities caused by various factors, thereby improving or restoring physiological function and appearance.
Featured services:
1. Breast plastic surgery: gynecomastia, reduction mammoplasty, breast augmentation with implants, correction of breast ptosis, hypertrophic nipples, correction of inverted nipples, and endoscopy-assisted removal and reconstructive repair of breast injectables (Aomeiding) and implants, among others.
2. Oculoplastic surgery: repair of post-operative defects after eyelid tumor surgery, repair of ectropion and eyebrow defects, double-eyelid blepharoplasty, revision of unsatisfactory double-eyelid surgery, correction of epicanthus, correction of blepharoptosis, repositioning of prolapsed lacrimal glands, correction of upper-eyelid skin laxity, eye-bag removal, and correction of tear-trough deformity, among others.
3. Minimally invasive treatment of axillary osmidrosis: removal of apocrine glands through a small incision while preserving axillary skin, botulinum toxin injection treatment for axillary osmidrosis, and others.
4. Skin tumor treatment: refined minimally invasive repair of defects after excision of various benign and malignant tumors of the body surface. Benign tumors include pigmented nevi, verrucous nevi, cutaneous cysts, lipomas, hemangiomas, lymphangiomas, giant nevi, and neurofibromas. Malignant tumors include skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and fibrosarcoma.
5. Scar plastic surgery: use of multiple treatment methods to reconstruct skin scars caused by various factors, including hypertrophic scars, atrophic scars, keloids, and scar carcinomas, in order to restore normal appearance and function.
6. Repair of congenital defects and deformities: such as congenital cleft lip and palate, defects or deformities of the genitourinary organs, hypospadias, microtia, craniofacial deformities, and limb deformities, among others.
7. Maxillofacial skeletal plastic surgery: use of procedures such as mandibular angle osteotomy, reduction or augmentation malarplasty, and genioplasty to adjust the position and shape of the jaw bones and enhance the aesthetic quality of the facial contours.
8. Injection-based plastic surgery: use of botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, collagen, or autologous particulate fat to provide individualized noninvasive or minimally invasive treatment for dynamic and static facial wrinkles, enlarged masseter, gastrocnemius, or trapezius muscles, or depressed areas, thereby creating a more youthful face and an ideal body contour.
The department actively explores innovative technologies and service models in Huashan plastic surgery, achieving distinctive departmental features, individual expertise, specialization by disease, and development from key strengths to broader services. It conducts integrated multidisciplinary MDT development and has established 10 specialized-disease subspecialty outpatient clinics, open all day Monday through Saturday.
