Neurosurgery Ward IV
Since its establishment in 2012, Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery at the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has consistently provided 1st-class diagnostic and treatment technologies and attentive, considerate nursing support. Relying on outstanding refined departmental management and upholding the department motto of “fulfilling duties, shouldering responsibilities, pursuing excellence, and striving for perfection,” the ward is committed to advancement and innovation, making every effort to provide all patients with the most professional medical services and the most humane healthcare environment. A dutiful and responsible medical service system Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery has a professional and well-structured team of 9 doctors, including 3 chief physicians and 3 associate chief physicians; 8 doctors hold doctoral degrees. Ward 4 has Director Ye Wei, who is highly skilled and experienced across a broad range of techniques; Deputy Director Li Xianfeng, whose transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumors is exceptionally accomplished; and Deputy Director Ma Dongying, who returned after completing studies in Beijing. The department currently follows a medical service philosophy that gives equal emphasis to conventional and specialized treatment. It routinely provides diagnosis and treatment for traumatic brain injury, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage, intracranial tumors (such as craniopharyngiomas, acoustic neuromas, gliomas, meningiomas, etc.), intraspinal and spinal cord tumors, intracranial aneurysms, cerebrovascular malformations, and other diseases. In terms of specialized services, we provide treatment for functional neurosurgical diseases (such as decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm), as well as microsurgery protecting the motor cortex and deep brain regions. Since the department was established, we have systematically trained a group of young professionals by selecting them and sending them out for further study. In the future, we will develop specialized medical services in spinal cord diseases, intracranial arterial bypass, and other areas. The nursing team of 16 is led by Head Nurse Wang Yuena, and 12 members have at least a bachelor's degree. Effective and well-planned ward arrangements and nursing services with humanistic care are provided to meet all types of nursing needs.
Excellence and perfection through refined departmental management Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery places refined management at the same strategic level of importance as medical and nursing work. This ranges from the orderly and uniform placement of items and almost “obsessively clean” housekeeping to concise, standardized, meticulous management throughout the patient's admission. Efficiency is achieved through management, while excellence and perfection are reflected in the details. Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery stood out throughout the hospital from the very beginning of its establishment, ranking 1st in the hospital-wide balanced scorecard assessment in 2013. Because it upholds the medical service and ward management philosophy of “fulfilling duties, shouldering responsibilities, pursuing excellence, and striving for perfection,” patients who come because of its reputation arrive in an endless stream, and our department ranked among the top for 3 consecutive years in surgical volume, growth in patient volume, and patient satisfaction. A determined and innovative research team “Only 1st-class talent can build a 1st-class department.” Director Ye Wei firmly believes that “lifelong learning” is the “living source of water” that keeps a department young and progressing continuously. In professional skills, the department is willing to invest and its personnel are willing to work hard; it does not seek “instant results,” but instead pursues “accumulation day by day, diligent study and rigorous practice.” “Without accumulating small steps, one cannot travel 1,000 li; without accumulating small streams, one cannot form rivers and seas,” thus developing the philosophy of Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery that innovation and learning are the driving forces for progress. “Scientific research must originate from clinical problems, and research achievements must return to clinical application.” Director Ye Wei's early experience studying at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine provided the department's research and innovation development with a down-to-earth primary direction and a broad, high-level perspective. Our department undertakes 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 1 Heilongjiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation project, 2 Provincial Department of Health projects, and 2 Provincial Department of Education projects. It has published 12 SCI-indexed papers and dozens of papers in national- and provincial-level journals. Encouragingly, in 2015, the patent project applied for through research translation of inspiration drawn by Head Nurse Wang Yuena from nursing practice received recognition and high praise at the 19th Beijing International Science and Technology Industry Expo. It truly originated from clinical practice and gave back to clinical practice: “How can the canal be so clear? It is because a living source continually supplies it.” A profound culture of virtue within the department The motto of Harbin Medical University, “Straight as a tree and true to the plumb line; profound virtue carries medicine,” has deeply influenced the departmental culture of Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery. Patients' needs are the driving force behind our changes: to maintain air circulation, patients used miscellaneous objects to prop open ward windows, so Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery simply paid for fixed stays to be installed on all windows; the desks and chairs uniformly supplied by the hospital could scratch the floor when moved during use, so Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery again paid for the floor to be waxed and fitted the chair legs with silicone covers; in the past, patients disliked sharing rooms with patients who had tracheotomies, fearing 1) odors and 2) dirt, so Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery assigned separate rooms for tracheotomy patients, specially painted the walls with children's latex paint for easy cleaning, and additionally performed ultraviolet sterilization 2 times daily, strictly implementing infection control; there are no discarded water bottles in the ward that would not be found at home, and no cigarette butts that would not be found at home. Everything is required from the perspective and to the standards of a home. “Work seriously, live happily.” Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery has repeatedly organized doctors to go to primary-level communities and fields, 1) learning and teaching together with primary-level doctors and 2) enjoying the mountains and waters. Great medicine is simple; great kindness is beautiful. All medical and nursing personnel of Ward 4 of the Department of Neurosurgery uphold a work style of “fulfilling duties and responsibilities” and devote all their strength to patients' “excellent and perfect” recovery.
