Anaesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital is a first-level clinical department integrating clinical anesthesia, critical monitoring, emergency rescue and resuscitation, postoperative pain treatment, and surgical nursing, with coordinated development of medicine, education, and research. It has two major campuses, Pazhou and Civil Aviation, and is one of the first standardized residency training bases for anesthesiology in Guangdong Province. It has been rated an “Excellent Standardized Residency Training Base” by the hospital. The department currently has 135 medical and nursing staff, including 44 physicians: 6 chief physicians, 8 deputy chief physicians, 13 attending physicians, and 17 resident physicians; the nursing team has 91 members, including 2 deputy chief nurses, 14 nurse supervisors, 34 nurses with intermediate professional titles, and 41 nurses, of whom 18 are anesthesia nurses. The department performs more than 50,000 cases of anesthesia inside and outside operating rooms annually, comprehensively covering full-process perioperative management. Its services cover preoperative anesthesia assessment clinics, intraoperative vital-sign monitoring, emergency rescue and resuscitation of critically ill patients, and postoperative multimodal pain management. It has also expanded comfortable anesthesia services outside the operating room, safeguarding patients’ safety and comfort throughout the entire process of diagnosis and treatment. The department follows two development priorities: precision anesthesia and smart healthcare. It has established leading operating-room information management and pain management systems in the province, as well as an information management platform for labor analgesia, realizing paperless and informatized clinical documentation throughout the entire process. It has established comprehensive teaching and research platforms and has 18 full-process standardized residency training mentors, having trained more than 40 anesthesiology residents in total. In 2019, it completed a clinical data platform for anesthesiology and perioperative medicine; in 2020, it established a pain research laboratory. Total research funding exceeds RMB 3 million. Over the past five years, it has led or participated in more than 10 national- and provincial/ministerial-level research projects and published more than 20 SCI papers. It has jointly trained master’s and doctoral students with Jinan University, Southern Medical University, Guangdong Medical University, and Guangdong University of Technology, conducting in-depth interdisciplinary research between medicine and engineering and promoting the clinical translation of research achievements. As a medical technology department, it is based on full-cycle perioperative medical management and has developed four distinctive technology systems: precision visualized anesthesia, comfortable medical care, critical-care anesthesia rescue, and smart informatized anesthesia, covering all surgical departments in the hospital and the outpatient demand for painless diagnosis and treatment. I. Visualized precision anesthesia technology 1. Ultrasound-guided nerve block technology Relying on high-definition ultrasound equipment, the department performs nerve blocks in all parts of the body, accurately locating nerves and blood vessels, reducing the dosage of anesthetic drugs and the risk of puncture-related injury. It is widely used for postoperative analgesia in orthopedics, general surgery, and thoracic surgery, and for regional anesthesia of limb surgery. 2. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) monitoring For cardiovascular patients, thoracic surgery, and elderly critically ill patients, the department monitors cardiac structure, cardiac output, and volume status in real time during surgery, accurately guiding intraoperative fluid management and the use of vasoactive drugs, and greatly reducing intraoperative circulatory risks in cardiac surgery and elderly high-risk patients. 3. Multimodal visualized airway management The department is equipped with a complete range of devices, including fiberoptic bronchoscopes, video laryngoscopes, and rigid airway endoscopes. It manages difficult airways in a standardized manner, safeguards airway safety in obese patients and patients with cervical-spine deformities, maxillofacial trauma, or advanced critical illness, and has significantly reduced the incidence of airway-related adverse events during surgery. II. Comfortable anesthesia diagnosis and treatment in all scenarios The department breaks through the traditional boundary that anesthesia serves only the operating room and has established a comprehensive comfortable medical-care system covering people of all age groups. Labor analgesia: It standardizes the labor analgesia process and provides dedicated monitoring, reducing labor pain and improving the experience of vaginal delivery; painless endoscopic diagnosis and treatment: outpatient anesthesia for painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy, painless fiberoptic bronchoscopy, painless abortion, painless oocyte retrieval, and other procedures, using short-acting anesthetic drugs together with precise vital-sign monitoring so that patients recover quickly without obvious nausea or dizziness; comfortable anesthesia for children: individualized anesthesia plans are tailored for pediatric surgery, imaging examinations, and endoscopic procedures, balancing sedation safety with rapid postoperative awakening and reducing children’s psychological fear. III. Anesthesia management for critically ill patients and special populations The team has extensive experience with elderly patients, children, cardiac insufficiency, multiple organ comorbidities, and critically ill trauma patients. It has established standardized perioperative assessment, organ protection, and analgesia-management processes for very elderly patients with comorbidities. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, it performs anesthesia for a large number of operations in very elderly, critically ill, and emergency trauma patients. Its intraoperative emergency rescue and resuscitation capabilities are outstanding, building a strong life-safety barrier for emergency and critical operations throughout the hospital. IV. Standardized perioperative pain management The department has established an integrated management system comprising preoperative preventive analgesia, intraoperative multimodal analgesia, postoperative continuous patient-controlled analgesia (PCIA/PCNA), and chronic pain clinics. Relying on the pain information system, it dynamically tracks pain scores, reduces postoperative pain and adverse reactions to analgesics, shortens the time until patients get out of bed, and accelerates recovery in accordance with the enhanced recovery after surgery concept. V. Smart anesthesia informatization platform The department was the first in the province to implement an integrated digital anesthesia system, integrating preoperative assessment, real-time intraoperative monitoring data, postoperative pain follow-up, and research-data collection. It automatically retains data from the entire anesthesia process, simplifies clinical documentation, provides big-data support for clinical research and teaching case review, and realizes the digitization and standardization of anesthesia diagnosis and treatment.
