Hematology Department 3
<Department Overview>
The Department of Hematology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 1991. After the efforts of several generations represented by hematology professors Mao Yufang, Song Zhenlan, Lian Shimei, and Yan Jinsong, it has now developed into a doctoral and master's degree-awarding program in Internal Medicine (Hematology) at Dalian Medical University; a standardized residency training base of the National Health Commission; the Liaoning Provincial Medical Center for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation; the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Translational Medical Research for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation; the Diamond Bay Institute of Hematology; a Class I key medical discipline of Dalian; and the Dalian Key Laboratory of Hematologic Diseases. It is also a hematopoietic stem cell collection unit for the China Marrow Donor Program and the Taiwan Tzu Chi Marrow Donor Registry.
The Department of Hematology comprises 5 subspecialties and 1 provincial key laboratory, with a total of 14 Class-100 laminar-flow wards and 156 permanent beds. The subspecialties include Hematology I (Bone Marrow Transplantation), Hematology II (Lymphoma and Myeloma), Hematology III (Leukemia), Hematology IV (Red Blood Cell Diseases and Hemorrhagic and Coagulation Disorders), Diamond Bay Hematology (Post-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Comprehensive Hematology), and the Provincial Key Laboratory (responsible for hematopoietic stem cell translational research and genetic testing for hematologic diseases). There are currently 30 physicians, more than 90 nurses, and 5 laboratory staff; all hold at least master's degrees, and 15 hold doctoral degrees. Since hematopoietic stem cell transplantation began in 2014, nearly 600 transplants have been completed, with more than 100 transplants annually; the number of transplants ranks first in Liaoning and second among the three northeastern provinces. The transplantation technology is primarily allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, while autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are also performed. The diseases treated cover all types of hematologic diseases, including leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, severe aplastic anemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, pediatric congenital genetic diseases, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and myelofibrosis.
The Department of Hematology has strong research capabilities and routinely performs diagnostic technologies such as cytogenetics, genetic diagnosis, and immunologic testing. It has established research techniques and methods including whole-transcriptome sequencing, proteomic analysis, and patient-derived human leukemia/lymphoma mouse models (PDX), and conducts studies on the mechanisms of occurrence and treatment of hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. It has also conducted research on bone marrow transplantation technology guided by the use of new leukemia fusion genes as novel molecular markers, achieving abundant research results. In recent years, the proportion of staff with doctoral degrees has exceeded 50%. The department has undertaken 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 1 key research and development project of Liaoning Province, 8 projects of the Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Foundation and doctoral startup program, 1 key clinical construction project for the reform of provincial-level directly administered hospitals, and 1 Dalian science and technology innovation project, with total funding exceeding 10 million yuan; team members have published more than 20 English-language papers, with a highest single-paper impact factor of 19 and a cumulative impact factor greater than 300.
Never forgetting its original aspiration and continuing to strive forward, the Department of Hematology has formed a medical, nursing, and research team with bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as its major clinical direction, distinctive subspecialty features, and a well-structured personnel ladder. Its diagnosis and treatment of hematologic diseases have approached the advanced domestic level, enabling it to provide high-quality medical services to the local population.
<Hematology III Specialty Overview>
The Department of Hematology III of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, focusing on leukemia, was established in June 2013. It provides standardized diagnosis and treatment for leukemia, pursues precision diagnosis and treatment, and conducts clinical research to explore new treatment regimens for leukemia. On the basis of standardized diagnosis and treatment, Hematology III performs bone marrow transplantation for patients with refractory or relapsed leukemia. Working closely with Hematology I, it is responsible for treatment before and during bone marrow transplantation. Hematology III is both the initiator and the finisher of the bone marrow transplantation program, working closely with Hematology I from beginning to end and becoming the mainstay of bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Basic department profile: The department currently consists of 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 3 attending physicians, 2 resident physicians, and 15 nurses.
<Scope of Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment>
Standardized diagnosis and treatment of leukemia, individualized treatment of leukemia, and diagnosis and treatment of complications after bone marrow transplantation.
<Specialized Technical Features>
The core work of Hematology III is the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia, while related scientific research on leukemia is conducted simultaneously. The department has 22 beds and is equipped with 16 simple sterile laminar-flow beds. It has the Dalian Key Laboratory of Hematologic Diseases, with a focus on leukemia, where cytogenetic and genetic diagnosis of leukemia are performed. The main specialized technical features include: 1) MICM classification and risk stratification of leukemia; 2) standardized leukemia treatment, such as medium- and high-dose chemotherapy for acute granulocytic leukemia; 3) treatment of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia using pediatric protocols; 4) design of new chemotherapy regimens for refractory or relapsed acute leukemia, with clinical research conducted; 5) pre-transplant physical examinations and assessment of transplant status for bone marrow transplant patients; 6) mobilization and collection of bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow transplant donors; 7) diagnosis and management of complications in patients after bone marrow transplantation and long-term regular follow-up. The medium- and high-dose chemotherapy currently performed for acute myeloid leukemia on the basis of genetic and molecular stratification shortens the treatment period from the previous 2-3 years to 6-8 months, with approximately 40-60% of intermediate- and low-risk leukemia patients achieving clinical cure; clinical research on acute promyelocytic leukemia has shortened the treatment period for this type of leukemia to 1 year, with a cure rate of more than 95%. Through close collaboration in bone marrow transplantation, Hematology III has developed distinctive specialized features with substantial clinical content, and all medical and nursing staff will continue to provide excellent medical services to leukemia patients and bone marrow transplant patients in the region.
<Specialty Research and Education>
Research
The department undertakes 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China project and research on multiple major projects of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education, the Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and other institutions. It has published more than 10 papers, including more than 10 SCI papers.
Teaching
The department undertakes teaching for undergraduates, master's students, doctoral students, and physicians receiving further training, with emphasis on adapting education to individual abilities and on clinical skills training. It has trained nearly 40 master's students.
<Goals and Philosophy>
Build a bridge between standardized diagnosis and treatment of leukemia and bone marrow transplantation, so that leukemia is no longer an incurable disease.
