Mengla County People's Hospital in Yunnan described twenty-four-hour Lao-language guidance for patients crossing from Laos. The June 20, 2025 provincial health report follows existing care and a planned remote diagnostic service.

In 2024, foreign-patient visits increased 89 percent year on year. Patients from Laos accounted for 97.26 percent of that international activity. Common reasons for care included hypertension, diabetes, respiratory infections and digestive conditions.

Translation through registration, consultation and medicines

A Chinese-Lao help desk operates in the hospital hall. Staff fluent in Lao and Dai form a translation team available around the clock.

The service links registration, consultations and medicine collection, helping patients navigate these different steps in one language.

Repeat diabetes care and childbirth

A 44-year-old woman from Laos was attending her third cross-border diabetes review of 2025. She said her symptoms had improved and her work and daily life had returned to normal.

At this appointment, her doctor adjusted her individual plan to oral medicine without insulin injections, with monthly reviews. She recalled substantial limitations during earlier severe illness.

A Lao mother also described care during childbirth in February 2025. Doctors and a translator accompanied her throughout, followed by support during postpartum recovery.

An emergency transfer in October 2024

A thirteen-year-old girl from Luang Namtha province was referred urgently after eight days of high fever and fourteen hours in a coma.

Her Lao doctor advised transfer to China. At Mengman port, officers completed border procedures in eight minutes for this emergency. The child was then taken to Mengla hospital and diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia-associated encephalitis.

The report states that she recovered from the critical condition and later left hospital. The eight-minute clearance describes that particular referral.

Remote ECG remained a development plan

The hospital said it was accelerating construction of a 5G remote ECG diagnostic centre. Its aim was for patients to have an ECG in Laos and transmit it for assessment by Chinese specialists.

That was a future service direction; the language desk, consultations and hospital care described above were already in use.
