Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital has reported the treatment of a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who travelled to Guangzhou on a medical visa for hearing reconstruction. The case connects several stages that matter to an overseas family: assessment before departure, arrangements for admission, surgery and a subsequent appointment to activate the hearing device.

Assessment before travelling

The teenager, identified by the pseudonym Muna, had lived with severe sensorineural hearing loss for seven years following drug-related injury. Her family had sought treatment over several years before approaching the hospital’s ear, nose and throat service.

Before she arrived in China, the team led by Wu Peina held remote consultations and a multidisciplinary assessment. They reviewed her condition, established whether surgery was indicated and developed an individual hearing reconstruction plan. The family could discuss the expected results, risks and treatment schedule while still overseas.

The international medical team coordinated preparations for entry and admission alongside clinical planning. The ENT department worked with the outpatient and inpatient services, anaesthesia, imaging and laboratory teams so that arrangements made before travel could continue into hospital care.

Admission and surgery in September

Muna was admitted to the Xiehe international medical ward on September 22, 2026. Staff completed the preoperative examinations and risk assessment and refined the treatment arrangements after admission.

Wu’s team performed hearing reconstruction surgery on September 23. The hospital reported that the procedure proceeded smoothly. During recovery, the clinical and nursing teams monitored her condition and provided rehabilitation care, taking account of the family’s language habits and cultural practices.

A return visit for device activation

On September 30, Muna returned for postoperative review. After checking her recovery, Wu’s team worked with a cochlear implant equipment engineer to activate and adjust the device. The hospital reported that she was able to hear sounds when it was switched on.

The team continued to follow her recovery through postoperative rehabilitation and the device activation appointment.
