A sixty-year-old Indonesian man returned home after coronary intervention at Jiangsu Province Hospital in Nanjing. The July 24, 2025 municipal account describes how the patient, known as Mr N, reached the team and received treatment for severe disease in all three coronary arteries.

Seeking another option after fainting

About two months earlier, Mr N had suddenly fainted and undergone examinations at local hospitals twice. He was diagnosed with severe coronary artery disease. Bypass surgery had been recommended, but he was concerned about an open-chest operation and was receiving medication locally.

While browsing TikTok, he found videos shared by Indonesian cardiologist Jasmine showing complex coronary interventions at Jiangsu Province Hospital. He contacted her for help, and she suggested seeking treatment in China.

Professor Li Chunjian's team reviewed the case. Local angiograms showed severe narrowing in all three coronary arteries, together with substantial calcification. Despite the complexity, the team considered him eligible for an interventional approach.

Different strategies for different lesions

The procedure began at 9:30 am on July 17. For selected lesions, the team combined a cutting balloon with a drug-coated balloon, treating those areas without leaving an implant and reducing the need for multiple stents.

Severely calcified lesions were prepared with a shockwave balloon. Li explained that acoustic waves fracture the calcium so that a stent can expand more fully. The balloon-only strategy for some lesions was therefore distinct from preparation for stenting in calcified areas.

The team completed the intervention for the severe three-vessel disease after three hours.

Recovery before returning to Indonesia

The hospital reported that Mr N recovered well under the care of the medical and nursing team. He was discharged on July 22 and returned to Indonesia.

Before leaving, he thanked the Nanjing team. His treatment journey had progressed from overseas diagnostic images and contact with an Indonesian doctor to an individualized procedure based on the different coronary lesions.
