Distinctive Subspecialties and Core Technical Advantages The department has reached a leading domestic level in treating severe multiple and combined trauma. It has developed distinctive strengths in elderly hip fractures, spinal fractures, minimally invasive surgery for limb fractures and foot-and-ankle surgery. (I) Comprehensive treatment of severe trauma A standardized treatment pathway has been established for severe multiple and combined trauma. The department can maturely perform pelvic fracture surgery through multiple approaches, including the ilioinguinal approach, K-L approach, Stoppa approach, pararectus approach, lumbopelvic triangular fixation, sacroiliac screw fixation and pelvic INFIX fixation. It has extensive experience treating severe periarticular limb fractures, including plateau fractures, severe elbow fractures, pilon fractures and proximal humeral fractures. It performs hemi-shoulder and reverse shoulder arthroplasty, elbow arthroplasty, hip and knee arthroplasty and other joint replacements, as well as routine repair of tendon and ligament injuries at all sites, exploration, neurolysis and anastomotic repair of peripheral nerve injuries, standardized treatment of nonunion and bone infection, and limb-lengthening surgery. (II) Rapid treatment of osteoporotic fractures in older adults The department was the first in Xiamen to establish a green channel for elderly osteoporotic fractures (hip fractures and vertebroplasty), providing rapid treatment, effectively shortening treatment time and improving outcomes. It is a first-batch member of the Fujian Alliance for Rapid Treatment of Elderly Hip Fractures, and its treatment capability has a regional demonstration effect. (III) Limb-salvage treatment for diabetic foot It was among the earliest units in Fujian to perform transverse bone transport limb-salvage surgery for diabetic foot. Its limb-salvage rate is high, providing effective limb-preservation plans and reducing amputation risk. (IV) Foot-and-ankle surgery Routine treatment includes all types of foot-and-ankle trauma and corrective surgery for deformities, including correction of hallux valgus, clubfoot, flatfoot and cavus foot, resolving various foot-and-ankle pain and functional disorders. (V) Minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of spinal diseases Standardized surgery is performed for spinal fractures, lumbar disc herniation, spinal canal stenosis, spinal deformity and other spinal diseases. Minimally invasive principles are followed to reduce surgical trauma and accelerate postoperative recovery. IV. Multidisciplinary MDT Integrated Diagnosis, Treatment and Full-Course Management Relying on national, provincial and municipal key-specialty platforms, the department collaborates with other orthopaedic subspecialties, general surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, urology, radiology, pathology, geriatrics, anesthesiology, infectious diseases and precision medicine. It has established multidisciplinary cooperation and provides one-stop integrated plans for multiple and combined trauma, complex bone tumors, severe bone and joint infections, osteoporosis and other conditions. Following enhanced-recovery principles, it optimizes the entire care process, from preoperative assessment and individualized surgical planning to postoperative rehabilitation guidance. It works with rehabilitation and pain medicine to establish dedicated sports-injury and postoperative rehabilitation and pain-management teams, equipped rehabilitation wards and facilities, and a complete postoperative follow-up system. One-to-one outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation guidance is provided to reduce postoperative and exercise-related pain as much as possible, improve the care experience and support optimal functional recovery. A green channel for elderly osteoporotic fracture care provides rapid triage, assessment and surgery and effectively shortens preoperative waiting. Supporting rehabilitation services, guidance and postoperative follow-up provide full-course care and improve postoperative function and prognosis. The department has 45 open beds, 35,000 outpatient visits annually, 1,600 discharges and 1,200 operations per year. V.
