Orthopedics in mainland China is high-volume and well equipped, and implant prices in public hospitals have fallen sharply because artificial joints and sports-medicine devices are bought through national volume procurement[3][4]. In late 2022 the National Health Commission set up a National Center for Orthopedics led by Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital[1]. For international patients, the operation is rarely the hard part. Recovery, rehabilitation, clot prevention on the flight home and follow-up need the most planning.
What orthopedics covers in Chinese hospitals
General hospitals have a 骨科 (orthopedics department), often split into sub-departments. Large orthopedic hospitals such as Jishuitan divide further. Names you will see:
| Chinese | English | Typical conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 关节外科 | Joint surgery / arthroplasty | Hip and knee osteoarthritis, joint replacement, revision |
| 脊柱外科 | Spine surgery | Disc herniation, spinal stenosis, scoliosis |
| 运动医学科 | Sports medicine | ACL and meniscus tears, shoulder instability, arthroscopy |
| 创伤骨科 | Orthopedic trauma | Fractures, accidents |
| 手外科 / 显微外科 | Hand & microsurgery | Tendon, nerve, finger replantation |
| 足踝外科 | Foot & ankle | Bunions, ankle instability |
| 骨肿瘤科 | Bone tumours | Benign and malignant bone tumours |
| 小儿骨科 | Paediatric orthopedics | Developmental hip dysplasia, deformities |
| 康复科 | Rehabilitation | Post-operative physiotherapy |
| 中医骨伤科 | TCM orthopedics | Conservative care for sprains and pain (in TCM hospitals) |
What international patients usually seek
- Hip and knee replacement — see joint replacement.
- Arthroscopy and sports injuries (ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder) — see sports medicine and arthroscopy.
- Spine opinions for disc problems or stenosis — often best as a second opinion with imaging sent in advance.
- Rehabilitation after surgery — see rehabilitation.
- Fracture care after an accident while travelling — see emergencies in China.
National designations
The 国家骨科医学中心 (National Center for Orthopedics) was established by NHC notice, with Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital as lead hospitals in a "南北协同、优势互补" (north–south, complementary) model; the two hospitals run the centre day to day[1].
Many orthopedic departments also hold 国家临床重点专科 (national key clinical specialty) status. These are NHC-funded projects that are "认定为国家临床重点专科并挂牌" after a final review[2]. The NHC's current plan specifically targets orthopedics, including hand and spine surgery, in provinces where capacity is short, and lists robot-assisted surgery and "运动功能外科重建与恢复" (surgical reconstruction of motor function) among its technology priorities[2].
Technology and resources
At large orthopedic centres you can expect:
- MRI and CT within days, often the same day.
- Navigation and robot-assisted surgery for joints and spine at some centres; the NHC lists surgical robots among its priority technologies[2].
- Arthroscopy for knee, shoulder, hip and ankle.
- Procured implants. In public hospitals, hip and knee implants are bought through national procurement; the 2024 renewal round selected 54 manufacturers and 167 products, including domestic and international brands, and kept prices low[3]. Sports-medicine devices (anchors, fixation) were covered by the fourth national high-value consumables tender, alongside intraocular lenses, with average price cuts of about 70%[4]. Public hospitals sell procured items at purchase price[8].
The NHSA notes that most hip replacements remain in use for more than 15 years[5].
Strong cities
- Beijing and Shanghai host the two lead hospitals of the National Center for Orthopedics[1]. See Beijing and Shanghai. Shanghai also has the largest number of orthopedic providers in our directory.
- Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing and Xiamen have large university orthopedic departments.
- Haikou and Boao Lecheng suit people who want to combine rehab with a warm climate; Boao can also offer some devices not yet approved elsewhere in China — see Hainan Boao Lecheng.

Two routes and price tiers
Ordinary outpatient clinic and ward. Register with your passport, see an orthopedic surgeon, and if surgery is needed you are admitted to a regular ward. Basic medical services follow government-guided prices that apply to everyone[7]; procured implants are sold at purchase price[8]. You pay a deposit on admission and may be asked to top it up. Wards are Chinese-only and rooms are shared; families or paid carers (护工) often help with daily care.
International department or VIP (特需) ward. English-speaking coordinators, private rooms, one point of contact for paperwork, and hospital-set prices. One published example of the tier gap: China-Japan Friendship Hospital lists ¥500 for a chief-physician consultation in its international department, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[9]. See international departments explained.
| Tier | Implant price | Service and ward fees | Language |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary ward | Procured, no markup | Government-guided | Chinese |
| VIP / international ward | Usually same procured implants | Hospital-set, much higher | English support |
| Private hospital | Self-set | Self-set packages | Usually English |
Always ask for a written, itemised quote naming the implant brand and type. See costs and price comparison.
Preparing your records
- Recent imaging: X-rays, MRI or CT as DICOM files, plus reports.
- A clear history: when symptoms started, what treatment you have tried (physiotherapy, injections).
- Medicines, especially blood thinners, and allergies.
- Previous operation notes and implant details if you have had surgery on the same joint.
- Send these before you travel so the surgeon can say whether surgery is likely. The inquiry letter tool drafts a bilingual message.
Questions to ask
- Is surgery the right option now, or should I try conservative treatment first?
- Who will operate, and how many of these operations does the team do each year?
- Which implant or fixation device will you use, and is it a procured product?
- How many days in hospital, and what does rehab look like in the first six weeks?
- When can I fly, and what clot prevention do you recommend?
- Will I get the operation note, implant record and discharge summary in English?
Risks and follow-up
- Blood clots. Recent surgery is a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis, highest in the first weeks; the CDC advises compression stockings or preventive anticoagulation for long flights in higher-risk travellers[6]. Do not book the flight home until your surgeon agrees.
- Infection and wound problems usually appear in the first two weeks — stay nearby.
- Rehab gaps. Arrange physiotherapy at home before you leave.
- Implant records. Keep the implant card; your doctor at home will need it.
- Read risks and complications and recovery and travel activities.
Who should think twice: people with poorly controlled heart, lung or clotting problems, anyone who cannot stay several weeks after major surgery, and anyone without access to physiotherapy and follow-up at home.

Which hospitals are China's national orthopedic centres?
In late 2022 the National Health Commission set up the National Center for Orthopedics with Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital as the lead hospitals.
Are joint implants cheaper in China?
In public hospitals, artificial hip and knee joints are bought through national volume procurement and sold without markup, which cut implant prices sharply. Surgery, anaesthesia, ward and rehab fees come on top.
How long should I stay after orthopedic surgery in China?
It depends on the operation. For a joint replacement, plan 3–6 weeks in total; arthroscopy needs less, but you should still stay until your surgeon has checked the wound and agreed a rehab plan.
Can I fly soon after orthopedic surgery?
Recent surgery raises the risk of blood clots on long flights. Agree flight timing and clot prevention (stockings or medication) with your surgeon before booking.
Do I need an international department for orthopedic surgery?
No, but many visitors choose one for surgery because admission, consent and discharge paperwork are complex. Ordinary wards are cheaper but Chinese-only, and families often provide much of the day-to-day care.
