Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital has reported the care of an overseas trader who developed severe chest pain while attending activities associated with the Canton Fair. The patient was taken to the emergency department as chest pain and tightness worsened, and subsequently received coronary intervention followed by care at the hospital’s Xiehe international medical centre.

Emergency assessment during the visit

The emergency team assessed the patient’s symptoms, physical findings and imaging. It diagnosed an acute non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and activated the hospital’s Canton Fair emergency pathway for overseas patients.

Emergency medicine and cardiology worked together. The emergency team completed preoperative assessment, monitored vital signs and checked for contraindications while the interventional cardiology team led by Liu Yuan prepared for treatment. These steps were coordinated within the same emergency episode.

Angiography followed by a stent

The cardiology team performed coronary angiography to locate the narrowed vessel segment. It then inserted a coronary stent to reopen the affected artery and restore blood flow to the heart muscle.

After the procedure, the hospital transferred the patient to the Xiehe international medical centre for the recovery phase. This linked specialist emergency intervention with a department experienced in postoperative care for patients from abroad.

Rehabilitation with continuing cardiology input

The international centre and cardiology specialists jointly developed an individual postoperative plan. Care covered medication instructions, rehabilitation guidance and psychological support. The centre provided a separate private clinical space, dedicated one-to-one clinical support and nursing tailored to the patient’s needs.

The hospital describes a multilingual medical and nursing team at the centre. In this case, staff continued recovery care alongside cardiology rather than ending specialist involvement after the stent procedure.

At discharge, the hospital reported that chest pain had resolved and the cardiac functional indicators it assessed were normal.
