Rare Disease Center
The Shulan Rare Disease Center was established in September 2016 to strengthen clinical care and research and address difficulties in diagnosis, treatment and access to medicines for people with rare diseases. Professor Shou Zhangfei, hospital vice-president and nephrologist, directs the center, and Academician Li Lanjuan, an infectious diseases expert, serves as adviser. The hospital reports that the center has brought together hundreds of experts from China and abroad to provide comprehensive care for patients with rare diseases.
In 2019 the center and the Chinese Red Cross Foundation’s rare disease care program jointly established the Shulan Rare Disease Training Center to train urgently needed specialists and promote education about rare diseases. The center occupies over 800 square meters in Building 2 of Shulan Hospital, 848 Dongxin Road, Xiacheng District, Hangzhou. Its equipment includes an MGISEQ-2000 next-generation high-throughput sequencer and digital PCR instrument, an eight-zone NGS sequencing laboratory and a bioinformatics analysis platform. Supported by genetic diagnosis, high-throughput sequencing, NGS data analysis and the center’s genetics specialists, its services include genetic diagnosis of rare and difficult diseases, neonatal metabolic disease screening, safe medication testing for children and adults, early cancer diagnosis, precision genetic testing for targeted and immune therapies, and rapid NGS testing for microbial pathogens.
