Gastroenterology
Telephone: 020-89168081 Address: 9th Floor, Building 2 Department Introduction Department Group Photo The Department of Gastroenterology has 28 staff members, including 4 with senior professional titles, 8 with intermediate professional titles, and 16 with junior professional titles. The department currently uses 70 beds. It admits approximately 2,400 inpatients annually on average. The Gastroenterology outpatient clinic is staffed year-round by personnel with senior and intermediate professional titles, with an average of 40,000 outpatient visits annually. Medical Features Director Xu Ming leads physicians on rounds and performs examinations for patients. It has medically distinctive projects with advantages at an advanced domestic level, including: 1. Diagnosis and treatment of difficult diseases: The Second People's Hospital of Guangdong Province is a Grade III Class A general hospital. As one of the main departments in the internal medicine system, the Department of Gastroenterology has accumulated extensive clinical experience through long-term clinical practice and developed mature diagnostic approaches and treatment methods for the diagnosis and treatment of various difficult cases. 2. Acute severe pancreatitis: Through admitting patients with severe pancreatitis, mature treatment protocols have been summarized that effectively prevent serious complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, pancreatic abscess, pancreatic encephalopathy and septic shock. The rescue success rate is above 90%, reaching an internationally advanced level. 3. The department has extensive experience in treating decompensated cirrhosis. TIPS treatment is performed for patients with portal hypertension, clearly reducing portal pressure; autologous ascites reinfusion is performed for patients with refractory ascites in the decompensated stage of cirrhosis, with good results and reduced albumin use; comprehensive sequential treatment of liver cancer is provided; liver biopsy and sclerotherapy for hepatic cysts are performed. 4. Treatment of refractory inflammatory bowel disease; integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment of chronic colitis; placement of a small-intestinal drainage catheter to treat intestinal obstruction. 5. Diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract tumors: For patients with advanced tumors, precise treatment is performed after surgery, and individualized chemotherapy regimens are provided, effectively controlling tumor recurrence and metastasis, significantly prolonging survival and improving quality of life. 6. The use of advanced methods such as endoscopic chromoendoscopy, magnifying endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography has significantly improved the diagnosis rate of early digestive tract cancers. For “one-point cancer, ” carcinoma in situ and early cancer, endoscopic treatments such as en bloc mucosal resection, laser cauterization and argon coagulation are performed, reducing surgical trauma and costs. At present, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of submucosal lesions under gastroscopy and colonoscopy, chromoendoscopy, classification of glandular opening patterns, and mucosal resection techniques (EMR and EPMR) have formed a complete set of mature technologies. 7. Endoscopic treatment of massive digestive tract bleeding: 1) Variceal bleeding: Endoscopic treatment of esophageal and gastric fundal variceal rupture bleeding caused by portal hypertension has been performed for more than 10 years, reaching an advanced domestic level. It includes endoscopic sclerotherapy for esophageal varices, tissue adhesive injection therapy for gastric fundal varices, and ligation therapy. The emergency bleeding rescue success rate is high. 2)Non-variceal bleeding: Dozens of cases of acute massive bleeding are admitted each year. According to the nature, location and size of the bleeding focus and the diameter of the blood vessel, injection, radiofrequency, electrocoagulation, ligation and argon coagulation methods are selected for hemostasis, satisfactorily controlling the condition of more than 95% of patients. Combined with medication, this significantly reduces the recurrence rate. 8. Endoscopic treatment of pancreatic and biliary diseases: Endoscopic minimally invasive treatment of biliary tract and pancreatic diseases, especially endoscopic minimally invasive treatment of pancreatic diseases (therapeutic ERCP technology), including endoscopic duodenal papillotomy, lithotripsy and stone extraction, nasobiliary (nasopancreatic) drainage, and internal biliary stent drainage for benign and malignant diseases of the biliary tract and pancreas (common bile duct stones, malignant cholangiocarcinoma, acute and chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer). 9. Gastrointestinal motility: Esophageal manometry (indications: upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction, achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and esophageal motility disorders); anorectal manometry and rectal biofeedback therapy (indications: habitual constipation, pelvic floor spasm syndrome, anorectal motor dysfunction, and fecal incontinence); 24-hour pH monitoring (indications: gastroesophageal reflux disease, observation of gastric-fluid pH in chronic atrophic gastritis, hypersecretion of gastric acid, differential diagnosis of asthma, and noncardiac chest pain). 10. Diagnosis and treatment of small-intestinal diseases using double-balloon enteroscopy/capsule endoscopy: Double-balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy are used to observe the entire small intestine, improving the definitive diagnosis and cure rates of small-intestinal diseases. 11. Endoscopic treatment of digestive tract stenosis: Benign and malignant esophageal strictures are relatively common clinically. Our department performs rigid and balloon dilation of esophageal strictures, metallic stent placement, and stent placement for rectal strictures. 12. Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of achalasia, with definite efficacy. 13. Carbon 13 breath test and carbon 14 breath test for detection of Helicobacter pylori infection. Scientific Research In the past 3 years, the department has received funding for 1 project from the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, 2 projects from the Guangdong Science and Technology Plan, 1 project from the Medical Scientific Research Fund of the Guangdong Provincial Health Department, and 2 projects from the Guangdong Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. While ensuring excellent completion of clinical work, the department focuses on research in the following areas: 1. Basic and clinical research on digestive tract tumors; 2. Treatment of refractory ascites in the decompensated stage of cirrhosis; 3. New endoscopic diagnostic and treatment technologies; 4. Pathogenesis and new diagnostic and treatment technologies for functional gastrointestinal diseases. Medical Education Our department is a national standardized residency training base, a training base for endoscopy and minimally invasive medicine of the Ministry of Health, and a specialty physician training base of the Guangdong Provincial Health Department. Each year, it enrolls approximately more than 100 standardized training residents and visiting physicians for study. In addition, there are dozens of interns and rotating trainees. Teaching rounds and lectures are arranged every week. Each year, physicians at all levels undergo quantitative assessments, and senior attending physicians receive targeted training, ensuring that the department has distinctive features and each person has a specialty. Our department has advanced equipment, strong technical capabilities and outstanding scientific research achievements, and will serve patients with enthusiasm. Tel: (020) 89168081
