【Overview】 Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine began clinical anesthesia work in the 1960s. After years of discipline development, the Department of Anesthesiology has formed a large anesthesiology department structure consisting of the anesthesiology departments of six hospitals and one pain diagnosis and treatment center. The Anesthesiology Department of our hospital is a key clinical specialty in Guangdong Province and a secondary clinical discipline integrating clinical anesthesia, pain diagnosis and treatment, teaching, and research. Our department upholds the philosophy and departmental motto of “pursuing depth in medicine, excellence in medical skills, fundamentals in medical service, and high standards in medical ethics” and “administering anesthesia in the right measure for comfort and safety, and performing technical procedures steadily, accurately, gently, and swiftly.” It is a medical and nursing team with good professional ethics and high medical technical competence. In 2021, it completed more than 110,000 surgical anesthesia procedures; painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy and painless induced abortion increased substantially for several consecutive years, with the annual volume also exceeding 30,000 patient-visits. The Anesthesiology Department of our hospital has 67 operating rooms, including multiple Class-100 operating rooms and multiple integrated operating rooms. University Town Hospital has one DSA hybrid operating room, and the Nansha Hospital currently under construction will have MRI and DSA hybrid operating rooms, equipped with an anesthesia intensive care unit (AICU). The operating rooms have advanced equipment and an extensive range of visualization-assisted minimally invasive surgical systems. They have Guangzhou’s first orthopedic robot, the “Tianji” orthopedic surgical robot system; a ZEISS surgical microscope system; a Smith & Nephew high-definition arthroscopy display system and lateral spinal endoscopy surgical system; a Storz ultra-high-definition laparoscopic system; an Aesculap 3D laparoscopic system; and others. The Department of Anesthesiology has high- and mid-range anesthesia machines from the Dräger, Ohmeda, and Mindray 65 series, as well as multifunctional physiological and anesthesia monitors from Philips, Detax, Mindray T8, and other brands. Airway-management equipment includes advanced endotracheal intubation tools such as visual flexible scopes, visual rigid scopes, video laryngoscopes, and lightwands. For hemodynamic monitoring, it has multiple FloTrac / Vigileo monitoring systems and two mostcare hemodynamic monitors. For brain-function monitoring, it has multiple BIS depth-of-anesthesia monitoring devices, multiple Narcotrend depth-of-anesthesia monitors, one Masimo SedLine® brain-function monitor, and two cerebral oxygen monitors. It has multiple bedside ultrasound machines, including Philips IE33, GE, Sonosite portable ultrasound machines, and others. 【Talent Structure】 Our department is the chairing institution of the Anesthesiology Professional Committee and the Perioperative Medicine Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, the Blood Conservation Society of the Guangzhou Medical Association, and the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Guangdong Grassroots Medical Association; it is also a graduate training site of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. The department currently has 284 medical, technical, and nursing staff, including 96 physicians, 187 nurses, and 1 technical engineer. Among the anesthesiologists, 9 hold senior professional titles and 13 hold associate-senior titles; 11 have doctoral degrees, 73 have master’s degrees, and 7 are master’s supervisors. The department has sent a number of key personnel as visiting scholars to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the University of Pennsylvania, Southwestern Medical Center, the University of Virginia, and the University of Porto in Portugal. It has also sent more than 20 person-visits to leading medical schools in China for advanced study, enabling timely awareness of the latest clinical technology developments in China and abroad. Several outstanding young physicians have been selected to participate in various specialty case competitions and speech competitions at the national and provincial levels, achieving excellent results. 【Specialty Features】 Our department routinely performs surgery in patients over 80 years of age, on-pump and off-pump cardiac surgery, kidney transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, gynecologic surgery, urologic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology procedures, outpatient painless procedures, and other operations. It undertakes anesthesia for surgeries in all specialties throughout the hospital and for various difficult, emergency, and critically severe operations, including heart transplantation; “awake anesthesia” for craniocerebral surgery; laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy; and laparoscopic thyroidectomy with “intraoperative nerve monitoring.” It has implemented the technical application of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), providing a new means of monitoring cardiac function intraoperatively and guiding and evaluating the selection of cardiac surgical methods and surgical efficacy. Based on TEE technology and in collaboration with cardiac surgery, it has carried out ultrasound-guided minimally invasive trans-right-ventricular puncture occlusion procedures, achieving ideal treatment results. 【Research Achievements】 Our department is one of the few anesthesiology departments in the region with GCP qualifications in anesthesiology, and it has completed multiple GCP projects. It has participated in multiple multicenter clinical research projects, including the “973” project. Over the past 10 years, our department has received more than 50 grants at the provincial/ministerial level, from the Natural Science Foundation, and at other levels, with more than 2 million yuan in research funding. It has published more than 200 articles of various types, including SCI papers and papers in Chinese medical journals, in publications such as the European Journal of Anesthesiology, BMC Anesthesiology, the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Chinese Journal of Anesthesiology. It has obtained multiple patents. In recent years, it has received four first- or second-prize School Science and Technology Progress Awards and one second-prize Hospital Medical Achievement Award. Faculty members of our department have served as deputy editors-in-chief or contributed to the editing of various works, including 《Illustrated Abdominal Minimally Invasive Surgery》, 《Detailed Explanation of Clinical Cases》, 《Clinical Monitoring》, 《Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Surgery》, 《Multiple-Choice Questions in Modern Anesthesiology (2nd Edition)》, 《Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica》, and 《Practical Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Surgery》. 【Specialty Influence】 In recent years, our department has successfully held multiple annual meetings and academic conferences, including the Annual Meeting of the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Guangdong Grassroots Medical Association, the Academic Annual Meeting of the Anesthesiology Committee of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and the Guangzhou Annual Conference on Blood Conservation. These events have expanded the influence of the Anesthesiology Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the anesthesiology community of Guangdong Province and enhanced the reputation of our hospital. It has organized multiple assistance activities for primary-level hospitals through the Anesthesiology Branch of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and the Anesthesiology Professional Committee of the Guangdong Grassroots Medical Association. It has held anesthesia visualization training courses, which have received widespread acclaim from primary-level physicians. The specialty has also established counterpart collaboration relationships with many hospitals in the province and regularly sends experts to partner hospitals for consultations, free clinics, and ward rounds. The discipline is a master’s training site of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and has trained a total of 46 master’s students. It is an internship base for undergraduate students majoring in anesthesiology at Guangdong Medical University, Hubei University of Medicine, and Wannan Medical College. Relying on the hospital’s Clinical Skills Training Center, the department provides professional basic skills training for graduate students and interns. The specialty actively conducts external exchanges and has established long-term friendly cooperative relationships with research institutions including the affiliated hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Department of Anesthesiology of the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.
