【Overview】The Laboratory Department of Ersha Island Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is affiliated with the Department of Laboratory Medicine. After more than 20 years of development, it has become a comprehensive medical laboratory integrating clinical care, teaching, and research. Located on the scenic Ersha Island, Ersha Island Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine became the first hospital laboratory in China to obtain accreditation as an ISO/IEC 17025 testing laboratory in 2004, and passed ISO 15189 medical laboratory accreditation in 2005. It currently has 17 employees, including 1 doctoral degree holder, 6 master's degree holders, and 8 bachelor's degree holders; 6 staff members with senior professional titles, 5 supervising laboratory technologists, 5 laboratory technologists, and 2 clerks.

【Department Features】 1. Clinical services The department places great emphasis on operational development and has strong testing and service capabilities, with its workload increasing year by year. It currently has 5 specialty groups: clinical basic laboratory testing, clinical transfusion medicine testing, clinical biochemistry testing, clinical immunology testing, and clinical microbiology testing. The laboratory covers approximately 500 square meters. It is equipped with large-scale instruments and equipment including the Roche COBAS 702 biochemical analyzer, Hitachi 7180 biochemical analyzer, Roche COBAS E602 chemiluminescence analyzer, Roche COBAS E801 chemiluminescence analyzer, Abbott i1000SR chemiluminescence analyzer, Siemens ATELLICA chemiluminescence analyzer, IMMULITE 2000 chemiluminescence analyzer, Premier Hb 9210 glycated hemoglobin analyzer, sebia Capillarys 2 Flexpircing glycated hemoglobin analyzer, Roche COBAS E411 chemiluminescence analyzer, Mindray CS7500 hematology analyzer, Sysmex XN-1000 hematology analyzer, Sysmex CS-5100 fully automated coagulation analyzer, ALI FAX ROLLER 20 erythrocyte sedimentation rate analyzer, Johnson & Johnson ORTHO VISION blood group typing and crossmatching analyzer, Kebo S120&AUTO urinalysis automation line, Wondfo FA160 fecal analyzer, bioMérieux BACT/LERT 3D blood culture instrument, Thermo Phadia 250 allergen analyzer, and a Thermo benchtop multipurpose refrigerated centrifuge, providing accurate and timely laboratory reports for clinical departments. The department conducts internal quality control for all testing items and actively participates in external quality assessment activities. In recent years, the Laboratory Department has actively participated in external quality assessment programs organized by the National Health Commission Clinical Laboratory Center and the Guangdong Clinical Laboratory Center for routine biochemistry, blood lipids, blood gases, special proteins, clinical immunology, endocrinology, clinical microbiology, blood cell analysis, coagulation, and urinalysis; PT scores for more than 95% of the items reached 100 points.

2. Teaching The department has strong teaching capabilities. Each year, it undertakes the teaching of Experimental Diagnostics for university undergraduates and students in seven-year master's programs; it is responsible for teaching multiple specialized courses in the undergraduate Medical Laboratory Technology program of the Department of Medical Laboratory, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine; and it receives approximately 15 interns each year.

3. Research The department has strong research capabilities. Over the past 5 years, it has undertaken or participated in 9 research projects at or above the provincial or ministerial level, including projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 12th Five-Year Plan projects, and projects of the Provincial Natural Science Foundation. It has obtained 1 utility model patent; published more than 30 academic papers in professional journals including Inflammation Research, Clinical Laboratory, Chinese Medical Journal, and Chinese Journal of Laboratory Medicine; and co-edited multiple monographs and textbooks.

4. Service To further improve the quality of laboratory services, meet the needs of clinical departments and patients, and provide high-quality services to clinical staff and patients, our department uses the Youth Civilization Unit initiative as its vehicle and Bridge Culture as its departmental culture, building a bridge among the laboratory, patients, clinical departments, and society—a bridge for communication and a bridge for serving patients. Using lean PDCA management tools, it improves service standards and has established various communication channels and methods to understand clinical needs and feedback, such as proactive consultation services, clinical/patient satisfaction surveys, regular clinical surveys, and so on. The implementation of these measures has been welcomed and well received by clinical departments, with significant results. They have not only deepened clinical departments' understanding of laboratory testing, but also strongly promoted the development of the Laboratory Department's work; participation in clinical consultations, the hospital director's three-tier ward rounds, and other activities has greatly broadened the clinical perspective of Laboratory Department personnel. Every quarter, the department issues clinicians with a quarterly report on bacterial distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility analysis, and organizes and implements training for all nursing staff of the branch hospital on laboratory specimen collection methods, standards, precautions, and related content. It cooperates with the hospital to complete Internet Plus hospital services such as WeChat and Alipay, creating accurate, rapid, high-quality, and convenient laboratory services; test results can be queried via WeChat or Alipay, making it more convenient for patients to seek medical care.
