Pediatric Albinism
Albinism is a genetic disorder. Due to a deficiency of melanin, patients have reduced melanin in the skin, are sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and are prone to skin cancer; ocular albinism can cause photophobia, reduced pigmentation of the retina and iris, and lead to foveal hypoplasia, nystagmus, strabismus, abnormalities in optic nerve root development, and other conditions resulting in reduced visual acuity. In the past, at other hospitals, children with albinism were considered to fall within the treatment scope of dermatology, with the main focus on preventing diseases such as skin cancer; however, the vision of children with albinism was often overlooked. The visual acuity of children with albinism is affected by the severity of the condition. While treating albinism, it is also necessary to regularly examine and monitor the eyes and provide timely, appropriate specialist treatment.
