Obstetrics and gynaecology (OB/GYN, 妇产科) in China is delivered mainly through large public general hospitals and dedicated maternity-and-gynaecology hospitals, and its leading departments carry national designations — Peking Union Medical College Hospital's department, for example, is a national key specialty, the national quality-control centre for gynaecology and a National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases[1]. International patients can use ordinary gynaecology clinics at the same government-guided prices as local patients, or choose a VIP/international tier for language and time[5]. Gynaecology — evaluation and planned minimally invasive surgery — is realistic to plan a trip around; obstetrics, with its months of antenatal care, usually is not.

How OB/GYN is organised in Chinese hospitals

In a general hospital the department is 妇产科; large departments split into sub-specialty groups. PUMCH's, for example, lists obstetrics, general gynaecology, gynaecological oncology, reproductive endocrinology and family planning[1]. You may also see:

  • 妇科 (gynaecology) — fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, prolapse, pelvic-floor problems.
  • 妇科肿瘤 (gynaecological oncology) — cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers, and trophoblastic disease.
  • 生殖内分泌 (reproductive endocrinology) — menstrual disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause; infertility treatment sits in the 生殖医学中心 — see our fertility specialty page.
  • 产科 (obstetrics) — antenatal care, delivery, high-risk pregnancy, and 产前诊断 (prenatal diagnosis).
  • 宫颈门诊 / 阴道镜 — cervical screening follow-up and colposcopy.

Many cities also have stand-alone 妇产医院 or 妇幼保健院 (maternity and child health hospitals) focused on women's and children's care.

National designations

China marks clinical strength through national programmes rather than rankings. The National Health Commission funds national key clinical specialty projects, and its 14th Five-Year capacity plan lists gynaecological cancers (ovarian, cervical) among the core areas to build in every province and obstetrics among the specialties to strengthen where resources are short[4]. Department pages record further designations: PUMCH's OB/GYN — founded by Lin Qiaozhi, a founder of modern Chinese obstetrics and gynaecology — has been a national prenatal-diagnosis centre since 2003 and a National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases since 2014, and was approved as the national gynaecology quality-control centre in 2024[1]. Peking University Third Hospital is also part of the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, for reproductive health[2].

Which cities are strong

  • Beijing — PUMCH's OB/GYN with its gynaecological-oncology and reproductive-endocrinology groups[1], and Peking University Third Hospital's obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine[2].
  • Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and other large cities have dedicated maternity-and-gynaecology hospitals and strong university-hospital departments.

Browse hospitals with OB/GYN services to compare by city and language support.

What a trip can realistically be for

  • Diagnosis and second opinions — an unclear ultrasound finding, abnormal bleeding, a gynaecological tumour; bring imaging and pathology so specialists can review the original material.
  • Planned minimally invasive surgery — hysteroscopy, laparoscopic removal of fibroids or ovarian cysts, endometriosis surgery — with a defined pre-operative work-up, a hospital stay and a recovery window before flying.
  • Cervical screening follow-up — colposcopy and biopsy, with a wait for pathology.

Obstetric care is different. Pregnancy needs continuous antenatal care, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that the best time to travel is mid-pregnancy (14–28 weeks), that travel becomes riskier after 28 weeks, that international flights may have earlier cut-offs and that travel is not recommended with complications such as preeclampsia, ruptured membranes or preterm labour[3]. If you already live in China, register early with a hospital that has obstetrics; if you are visiting while pregnant, plan for emergencies rather than elective care.

The two routes: ordinary clinics vs VIP/international departments

Every Chinese public hospital runs two price tiers. Basic medical services are billed at government-guided prices for every patient, foreigners included; VIP (特需) and international services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at 10% of total service volume[5]. As an illustration of the gap, China-Japan Friendship Hospital lists ¥500 for a chief-physician consultation in its international department against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[6].

The ordinary route is inexpensive but busy: first-time registration with a passport at a staffed window, short consultations, examinations in crowded clinics and all paperwork in Chinese. Ultrasound and blood tests are often available on the same day. Read your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID and consider an interpreter — a female interpreter or companion if you prefer.

The VIP/international route buys appointment times, privacy, longer consultations and foreign-language service at several times the ordinary price. See international departments explained and choosing between public and private hospitals.

Payment: larger hospitals are required to accept foreign bank cards, mobile payment and cash[7]; most visitors use Alipay or WeChat Pay. Surgery and admission require a deposit.

Records to bring

  1. Ultrasound reports with images (pelvic or transvaginal), and MRI in original DICOM format if you have it.
  2. Cervical screening results (Pap/HPV), colposcopy reports and biopsy pathology.
  3. Pathology slides or reports for any tumour, plus operative notes from previous surgery.
  4. Hormone and tumour-marker results with units and reference ranges.
  5. For pregnancy: your antenatal record, due-date confirmation, blood group, scan reports and any complications.
  6. Medication and allergy list with generic names, including contraception and hormone therapy.

Translate key documents — see getting your medical records translated — and use the bilingual inquiry letter tool to ask the hospital in advance.

Risks, follow-up and who should not travel

  • Do not travel with urgent symptoms — heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, suspected ectopic pregnancy, or pregnancy complications need care where you are; read emergency care in China.
  • After surgery, blood-clot risk rises with long flights; ask the surgeon for a written earliest-flying date and advice on prevention.
  • Cancer care is multi-step. Surgery may be followed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy; agree where those will happen before you start.
  • Leave with complete records — diagnosis certificate (诊断证明), operative and pathology reports, itemized invoices — see medical records and follow-up, and check visa and entry rules.

Can a foreign woman see a gynaecologist at a Chinese public hospital?

Yes. Gynaecology clinics are open to everyone at the same government-guided prices; on the first visit you register in person with your passport. Consultations in the ordinary clinic are short and in Chinese, so bring an interpreter or book the hospital's VIP or international service.

Is it a good idea to travel to China to give birth?

For most people, no. Pregnancy care is a months-long relationship, late-pregnancy travel carries real risks, and airlines set cut-off dates for flying. If you live in China or will be there late in pregnancy, choose a hospital with obstetrics early and register for antenatal care.

Which gynaecological problems are realistic to plan a trip around?

Planned, well-defined problems: evaluation of fibroids, ovarian cysts or abnormal bleeding, endometriosis assessment, cervical screening follow-up, a second opinion on a gynaecological tumour, or minimally invasive surgery with a clear recovery plan.

When is the safest time to fly during pregnancy?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists describes mid-pregnancy (14 to 28 weeks) as the best time to travel; after 28 weeks travel becomes riskier and international flights may have earlier cut-offs. Discuss any trip with your own obstetrician first.

What should I bring to a gynaecology appointment in China?

Recent ultrasound reports and images, cervical screening (Pap/HPV) results, pathology from any biopsy, operative notes, hormone results with units and reference ranges, and a medication list with generic names.
