China Medical Visa (S2): Entry Rules & Checklist 2026

Plan medical travel to China: S2 visa documents, 30-day visa-free rules, Hainan eligibility, companions and extensions, with official sources.

Son güncelleme:

Quick answer

An S2 private-affairs visa is a documented route for planned treatment in China when a visa is needed. Hainan's regional waiver explicitly covers eligible medical visits within Hainan Province; some bilateral waivers also cover care. Other arrangements need a purpose-specific check.

  • Does China have a medical visa?: China has no separate visa category officially named a medical visa.
  • What documents are needed for a China S2 medical visa?: Prepare your passport, application and photo, plus the receiving Chinese hospital's invitation, admission or proposed-admission document as required by your consular office.
  • Can I enter Hainan visa-free for medical treatment?: Eligible ordinary-passport holders from 61 countries can enter and leave through Hainan's open ports for medical treatment for up to 30 days, with activities limited to Hainan Province.
  • Does S2 guarantee a 180-day stay?: No. S2 is a short-stay category for no more than 180 days; the consular office determines the actual permitted stay and number of entries.

Planning dental care, an eye consultation, hearing-aid fitting or a health check-up in China starts with one practical question: which entry route fits your actual trip? Confirm the hospital, treatment dates and recovery time before committing to travel. The right paperwork helps keep your medical appointments and travel plans aligned.

Policy check: 25 October 2026. This guide covers mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao have separate entry rules. CareAtlas provides independent planning information; visa and entry decisions remain with the responsible Chinese authorities.

Which China visa or entry route fits a medical trip?

S2 is a documented route for planned short-term treatment when a visa is required. China's ordinary visa categories do not include a standalone medical visa. S2 covers other private affairs as well as family visits: you do not need a relative living in China simply to use its medical-treatment pathway. See the official visa application guidance and the consular S2 treatment checklist.

Route What matters for a patient
S2 private-affairs visa Consular guidance includes treatment and, where applicable, companions. The category covers stays of no more than 180 days; your actual grant may be shorter.
L tourist visa Intended for tourism. State your real main purpose when applying rather than describing a planned treatment trip solely as sightseeing.
Unilateral 30-day visa waiver Passport nationality alone is not enough: the stated purposes, intended stay and other conditions also matter. The general list does not explicitly name medical treatment.
Hainan 30-day regional waiver Explicitly includes medical treatment for eligible ordinary-passport holders, with activities limited to Hainan.
Bilateral visa waiver Read the agreement for your nationality. Some, including China–Malaysia, explicitly include medical care.
240-hour transit waiver Requires a qualifying onward journey to a third country or region and compliance with permitted ports and areas. It is not a general medical-entry permission.

M means commercial and trade activities, not “medical.” Q1/Q2 concern family reunion or visits involving Chinese citizens or permanent residents. Longer private-affairs stays involve a different visa/residence assessment; do not assume S2 automatically becomes S1 after 180 days.

What documents do I need for an S2 medical visa?

Start with your receiving hospital's international service team. Ask what it can issue for your particular consultation, treatment or admission, then compare that with your responsible Chinese consular office's current checklist.

Document group What to prepare or confirm
Identity and application Passport, application form and photograph. Visa applications commonly require at least six months of passport validity and blank visa pages.
Hospital acceptance The Chinese hospital's invitation, admission record or proposed-admission confirmation, in the form the consular office requests.
Supporting treatment information Relevant records, proposed treatment and expected time in China if requested. Ask the hospital to distinguish appointments, recovery and follow-up.
Payment and funding The financial evidence or guarantee required locally. Do not assume one universal bank-balance threshold.
Additional personal documents Proof of lawful stay if applying outside your country of nationality, former Chinese passport/visa documents where applicable, and companion evidence if needed.

These are preparation categories, not a single worldwide checklist. For example, the Chinese embassy in Kazakhstan lists a US$10,000 deposit certificate and generally up to two accompanying family members for its medical S2 applications. The Manchester checklist does not publish the same fixed funding threshold. Local rules and additional consular requests govern each application.

A hospital invitation supports an application; it does not guarantee a visa. Use our hospital inquiry-letter tool to draft an enquiry with English and Chinese templates. Add your questions about invitation letters and companion documents in the notes. Review the wording before copying it or sending it from your own email.

Can I travel visa-free for treatment in China?

Some arrangements explicitly allow it; others require a closer check of purpose. The Foreign Ministry's current unilateral-waiver FAQ lists 50 countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Russia and many European countries. It names business, tourism, family or friend visits, exchanges and transit, without separately listing medical treatment. This omission does not establish a ban on receiving care during a lawful visit, but it is not a blanket assurance for a trip whose main purpose is treatment.

The United States is not on that unilateral list. The published validity periods are 31 December 2027 for Russia, 31 December 2026 for the other 48 time-limited countries, and no stated end date for Brunei. Check the live official list for your departure date, especially for a trip in 2027.

Bilateral arrangements are separate. The China–Malaysia agreement FAQ explicitly includes medical care for eligible Malaysian ordinary-passport holders: passport validity of at least six months, no more than 30 days per stay and 90 days in each 180-day period. Those limits must not be copied to every nationality.

Why consider Hainan for an eligible short medical visit?

Hainan offers a clear policy basis for qualifying medical visitors. The National Immigration Administration's regional policy allows ordinary-passport holders from 61 countries to enter and leave through Hainan's open ports for medical treatment for up to 30 days, staying within Hainan Province. The list includes the US, Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan, South Korea and many European countries.

This can support planning around a suitable provider in Haikou, Sanya or Boao Lecheng. It does not establish that a particular treatment is suitable, available or completed within 30 days: obtain the hospital's assessment first.

If you enter mainland China in Shanghai before taking a domestic flight to Hainan, you need a valid entry basis at Shanghai. To continue from Hainan to another mainland region under the regional waiver, arrange the required immigration permission before leaving its permitted area. The official Hainan procedure explanation sets out that process; its older country count is superseded by the NIA's current list.

Does 240-hour visa-free transit work for my itinerary?

The NIA transit policy currently covers 57 nationalities, 65 ports and permitted areas in 24 provincial-level regions. You need a qualifying passport and confirmed onward journey to a third country or region. A simple A → mainland China → A return journey does not meet that onward-destination condition.

Meeting the transit-route test does not by itself confirm that your intended treatment purpose is covered. Check your full itinerary and purpose with the responsible authorities. A ten-day entry window is also not a medical recovery recommendation.

How should I plan companions, repeat visits and recovery?

Each companion needs their own entry basis. Some medical checklists limit accompanying relatives and require relationship evidence plus a hospital companion letter. A friend or paid caregiver should not assume that the family-companion rules apply to them. Coordinate these documents with the hospital and consular office.

For dental implants, hearing-aid fitting, eye procedures or rehabilitation, ask whether separate visits or follow-up appointments are needed. Check the visa's entry-validity date, number of entries and permitted duration of each stay separately. A multiple-entry visa does not permit an unlimited continuous stay.

Use the medical travel planning checklist and travelling with companions guide to organise practical arrangements. Let the treating team determine recovery and fitness to fly.

What if treatment takes longer than my authorised stay?

Being in hospital does not automatically extend immigration permission. Under the NIA's visa and permit guidance, visa holders seeking an extension must apply at least seven days before their permitted stay expires. For S2 other-private-affairs cases, the published extension limit is up to 90 days, and cumulative extensions cannot exceed the original permitted stay; approval remains case-specific.

Visa-exempt visitors needing additional time use the stay-permit procedure. Contact the local exit-entry authority before expiry and prepare its requested hospital and identity documents. If a long stay is planned from the outset, arrange the appropriate visa or residence pathway before travel rather than relying on a later extension.

Sık sorulan sorular

Does China have a medical visa?

China has no separate visa category officially named a medical visa. Published Chinese consular guidance places short-term treatment under S2 private affairs. Some visa-free arrangements explicitly cover medical care, so whether you need S2 depends on your passport, destination, purpose and length of stay.

What documents are needed for a China S2 medical visa?

Prepare your passport, application and photo, plus the receiving Chinese hospital's invitation, admission or proposed-admission document as required by your consular office. Financial, medical-record and companion documents vary by application location. A hospital's acceptance does not guarantee visa approval.

Can I enter Hainan visa-free for medical treatment?

Eligible ordinary-passport holders from 61 countries can enter and leave through Hainan's open ports for medical treatment for up to 30 days, with activities limited to Hainan Province. This regional arrangement does not itself authorise onward treatment in Shanghai, Beijing or elsewhere in mainland China.

Does S2 guarantee a 180-day stay?

No. S2 is a short-stay category for no more than 180 days; the consular office determines the actual permitted stay and number of entries. Check the duration printed on the visa, separately from its entry-validity date.

Can US citizens use China's 30-day visa-free policy?

The United States is not on the current 50-country unilateral list. US ordinary-passport holders are on the Hainan 61-country list, which explicitly allows medical treatment within Hainan under its conditions. The separate 240-hour transit route also requires a qualifying third-country or region itinerary.

Can my partner or a caregiver travel with me?

Each companion needs their own valid entry basis. Some consular medical checklists require family-relationship evidence and a hospital companion letter, and some limit eligible relatives or numbers. Confirm the rules for your application location, especially for a friend or paid caregiver.

Must every medical-visa applicant show US$10,000?

No globally uniform amount is established by the sources used here. Some consular checklists specify US$10,000; others give different or case-specific instructions. Use the current checklist for the office that will accept your application.

What if recovery takes longer than my permitted stay?

Hospitalisation does not automatically extend permission to stay. Visa holders seeking an extension must apply at least seven days before the permitted stay expires. Visa-exempt visitors needing additional time should contact the local exit-entry authority before expiry about a stay permit. Approval is case-specific.
