Buying glasses is the easiest piece of medical shopping you can do on a China trip: the country manufactures roughly half of the world's spectacle lenses[1], factory-direct pricing reaches the retail counter, and standard single-vision pairs are often finished the same day — shoppers at the biggest market report getting three pairs "all within an hour"[4]. The two things to get right are the exam (a quick refraction is not a medical eye check) and the specs you order. Here is how it works, and when a hospital optometry clinic is the better choice.

Why China is the place to buy glasses

One county-level city, Danyang in Jiangsu, produces lenses at a scale hard to picture: more than 1,600 companies and over 50,000 workers form a complete design–R&D–production chain with an annual output of 800 million lenses — about 50 percent of the world total[1], and roughly three quarters of China's national production[2]. The lenses sold in Western optical shops very often start here: Danyang receives over 15 million custom lens orders from international clients a year, and a custom order placed in a European shop is typically produced and delivered within about a week[7].

That industrial base feeds consumer markets. The optical mall across the road from Danyang's high-speed-rail station draws more than 10,000 visitors a day on weekends and holidays, many arriving by train from Shanghai and Nanjing just to buy glasses[3]. Big cities have their own wholesale optical markets and dense networks of chain stores, and nearly every sizable hospital runs an optometry/optical center. Myopia is a national public-health priority — overall myopia among children and adolescents was 51.9% in 2022[5] — so refraction services are everywhere and cheap.

Refraction vs a medical eye exam — know which one you're getting

This distinction matters more than where you buy the frame:

  • Refraction (验光): measures the lens power your eyes need. In optical shops it is done quickly — autorefractor, trial frame, sometimes a corneal curvature reading — usually free or nominal with a purchase. It tells you what to put in the lenses and nothing about why your vision changed.
  • Medical eye exam (眼科检查): performed in a hospital ophthalmology department or its optometry clinic — slit lamp, intraocular pressure, dilated fundus check when indicated — and able to detect glaucoma, cataract, retinal problems and other disease. China's National Health Commission issued an updated national guideline on myopia prevention and treatment in 2024, and hospital clinics work within that framework[6]; for children, hospital optometry (often with cycloplegic "wet" refraction) is the appropriate route rather than a shop refraction.

Practical rule: if you are over 40, diabetic, highly myopic, haven't had a full exam in years, or your prescription has jumped, spend the extra half-day on a hospital exam first — the registration and exam fees are modest, and you can hand the resulting prescription to any optical shop. Browse hospitals with ophthalmology services for international departments that can run the exam in English.

The specs to order (and carry home)

Insist on a written prescription and order form containing:

  • Sphere / cylinder / axis for each eye, and ADD for progressives;
  • PD (pupillary distance) — the number most often missing from foreign prescriptions; without it a shop must measure you, which is fine, but you want it on your copy for future orders;
  • Lens material and index (e.g. 1.56, 1.60, 1.67, 1.74 — higher index = thinner lens for strong prescriptions), plus coatings (anti-reflective, hardening, UV, blue-light if you want it);
  • Brand and origin of the lens blank if you are paying brand prices — Danyang factories make both branded and white-label product[2], and you should know which you are buying.

If you already have a prescription from home, bring it — shops will happily work from it. If not, the refraction happens on the spot. For progressives and high prescriptions, schedule the order early in your trip: you want days, not hours, between pickup and your flight, so problems can be fixed while you are still in the country.

Turnaround: same day is normal, complex is not

Standard single-vision lenses in common powers are stocked and edged on site — this is how market shoppers leave with finished glasses within an hour[4]. Expect longer for:

  • high or unusual powers, strong cylinders, prisms;
  • progressives and office lenses;
  • premium branded lenses that must be ordered from the factory — remember even international custom orders take about a week at the factory end[7].

Plan glasses shopping for the start of a trip, not the last afternoon.

Optical markets vs hospital optometry vs chain stores

Optical markets (Danyang and city wholesale malls) Hospital optometry centers Mall chain stores
Price Lowest; bargaining expected[3] Fixed, moderate Fixed, higher
Exam Quick refraction Full medical exam available[6] Refraction, standardized
Speed Often same day[4] Days for lens orders Same day to days
Paperwork/warranty Minimal; little recourse from abroad Formal receipts (fapiao), medical records Receipts, chain warranty terms
Best for Spare pairs, sunglasses, routine prescriptions Children, first exams, complex cases, documentation Convenience, brand frames

A sensible traveler's combination: hospital exam once, then buy multiple pairs wherever price and selection are best. Danyang itself is an easy high-speed-rail day trip on the Shanghai–Nanjing corridor[3] — see Shanghai, Suzhou and Nanjing if you are in the region; station touts are common, so walk past the greeters and compare several shops inside the market before committing[3].

Two price tiers: ordinary vs international/private. This is largely market-priced care, so prices differ by provider. In a public hospital's ordinary departments (普通门诊), basic services are billed at government-guided item prices that apply to every patient, foreigners included; 特需 (VIP) and international-department services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at a share of its services[8]. Public hospitals sell bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at their purchase price, with no markup[9]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital's published schedule lists a chief-physician consultation in its international department at ¥500, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[10]. You do not have to use the international department: with a passport you can register at the ordinary clinic and pay yourself (mainland insurance does not apply) — see your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The international department or a private hospital costs more but usually adds English-speaking staff, appointments and, often, direct billing with commercial insurers. Whichever route you choose, ask for a written quote.

Warranty abroad: assume you're on your own

Be realistic about after-sales once you fly home. A market stall's adjustment or replacement promise is of little use from another continent; even formal store warranties rarely cover international shipping or remote verification. Mitigations:

  • have frames fitted and adjusted properly before leaving; ask for spare nose pads and screws;
  • keep the written prescription and order sheet — any optician at home can then remake or adjust lenses;
  • pay the premium at a hospital optical center or established chain when you need documentation (invoices/fapiao for insurance or expense claims);
  • inspect finished glasses against the order before paying the balance: power, PD, coatings, frame alignment. A reputable shop will re-check them in front of you.

Limits worth stating: glasses bought abroad are a convenience purchase, not a medical safety net. If a shop refraction produces a big, surprising jump in your prescription, do not just buy stronger lenses — that is exactly the situation that calls for a medical exam[6]. Contact-lens fitting also deserves a proper clinic rather than a market counter.

Combining it with the rest of your trip

Glasses shopping fits into any itinerary — a half-day exam plus an hour of shopping[4] — which makes it a natural add-on to a bigger treatment trip such as a health checkup or dental work. If your eyes are the main event, consider pairing an optometry visit with a consultation about refractive surgery or, for older travelers, cataract assessment — the same hospital departments handle all three, and a thorough exam feeds them all.

Pertanyaan umum

How fast can I get glasses made in China?

At optical markets and larger shops, standard single-vision glasses are often ready the same day — shoppers report walking out with finished pairs within an hour. High prescriptions, progressives and specialty coatings can take days, so order them early in your trip.

Is the in-shop eye test enough?

A shop refraction only measures your prescription. It does not check eye health — pressure, retina, cataract, glaucoma. If you are over 40, haven't had a full exam in years, or notice vision changes, book a medical eye exam at a hospital ophthalmology/optometry clinic as well.

What should I bring to get accurate glasses?

Your current prescription if you have one (including PD — pupillary distance), or your current glasses so the shop can measure them. For progressive lenses, bring your old pair and allow adaptation time before flying home.

Are optical-market glasses good quality?

The lenses often come from the same factories that supply Western brands — Danyang alone produces about half the world's lenses. Quality risk sits mostly in fitting and quality control, which vary by shop: check the finished prescription against your order before paying the balance.

What about warranty once I'm back home?

Treat glasses bought in markets as effectively warranty-free once you leave China: a shop may promise adjustments or replacement, but exercising that from abroad is rarely practical. Hospital optical centers and chain stores give more formal paperwork — ask in writing what is covered and for how long.

Where should travelers buy — market or hospital?

Both, for different jobs. Hospital optometry suits medical exams, children, complex prescriptions and documentation; optical markets and malls win on price, selection and speed for routine single-vision pairs and spares.
