Aleksandr, a Russian tourist in Shanghai, was discharged from Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine on May 6, 2026 after emergency treatment for a heart attack. His care began with a call from his hotel and continued through ambulance assessment, cardiac resuscitation and coronary intervention.
An emergency call and an early hospital alert
Around 1 am on April 29, Aleksandr developed severe chest pain in his hotel, with heavy sweating and a sense of impending doom. The symptoms continued for 30 minutes without relief. His wife called the emergency number 120.
Ambulance staff performed an electrocardiogram during the journey. Using cardiac telemetry, they transmitted the results to Yueyang in real time, allowing the receiving team to make a preliminary assessment before arrival. The hospital's heart centre immediately activated its emergency response for acute myocardial infarction.
Restoring his heartbeat
At the hospital, clinicians repeated the ECG, completed additional examinations and confirmed acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI.
Aleksandr then developed ventricular fibrillation and lost consciousness. The team started advanced cardiac life support without delay. Defibrillation and chest compressions restored his heartbeat, allowing the urgent treatment preparations to proceed.
Coronary intervention followed by discharge
After completing the preparations, doctors performed an emergency percutaneous coronary intervention. During the procedure, Aleksandr experienced a reperfusion arrhythmia. Clinicians treated this with electrical cardioversion and medication while continuing the coronary treatment.
Balloon dilation and stent implantation reopened the blocked vessel. The published account described successful emergency treatment, and Aleksandr was able to leave hospital on May 6. He and his wife subsequently presented the staff with a banner thanking them for the care they had received.
