Trauma Emergency Department
Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Department of Trauma and Emergency Care of Shuguang Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in June 2004. It is one of the earliest independently established trauma emergency centers in the Pudong area, founded in accordance with the world’s most advanced concepts in trauma emergency care. It undertakes the treatment of severe trauma, emergency surgery, and acute abdominal conditions in Pudong. It treats more than 45,000 patient visits annually, rescues more than 300 patients with various critical illnesses, and performs more than 600 emergency operations, of which laparoscopic procedures account for more than 80%. It has received the “Civilized Collective” designation from Shuguang Hospital multiple times and has also received the Shanghai “Communist Youth League” Civilized Advanced Nursing Group designation. After nearly 20 years of discipline development, it has grown into a large, comprehensive professional specialty for trauma treatment integrating clinical care, scientific research, and teaching. It has trained a large number of academic and technical leaders in trauma surgery as well as physicians at training bases, and has become one of the most important trauma emergency centers in Pudong.
Department Team/Technical Level: The Department of Trauma and Emergency Care currently has 25 beds, including 6 beds in the ICU ward, and its medical and nursing team has more than 40 members. The medical team includes: 1 chief physician, 4 deputy chief physicians, 7 attending physicians, 1 resident physician, 1 physician with a doctoral degree, and 12 with master’s degrees; the nursing team has 2 deputy chief nurses and 7 charge nurses. The department adheres to the concept of coordinated development of clinical care, scientific research, and teaching. It has reached a domestically leading level in the treatment of critical trauma conditions such as near-fatal trauma, severe multiple trauma, complex liver trauma, traumatic hemopneumothorax, and severe pelvic fractures. While maintaining its existing advantages in medical technology, it has also developed a series of distinctive diagnostic and treatment services in response to the characteristics of modern trauma, including minimally invasive trauma treatment, treatment of geriatric trauma, trauma rehabilitation, microsurgical trauma repair, and wound repair.
Scientific Research/Achievements: The department attaches importance to academic exchange and research, and actively participates in and hosts various provincial-, municipal-, and national-level academic conferences on trauma emergency care and critical care. Relying on Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has participated in 2 major municipal research collaboration projects and published more than 100 papers, including 8 papers in SCI-indexed journals and more than 80 papers in core journals. Its academic views have been widely cited both in China and abroad.
Our department is connected to the 120 emergency network, forming the Shanghai model of integrated trauma emergency care throughout the entire process: “pre-hospital emergency care–critical care–in-hospital treatment.” It has independent ICU and general wards, and has established within the hospital an integrated model of emergency resuscitation–intensive care–general ward care. Emergency surgical patients and trauma patients, especially those with severe multiple trauma, can therefore receive comprehensive treatment rapidly. The department centrally handles all stages, including emergency resuscitation, life support and definitive surgery, as well as standardized treatment and nursing during the critical period. It accepts referred patients with critical surgical diseases from surrounding areas. Many patients have been brought out of critical condition, and most of them present silk banners or letters of thanks to express their gratitude after recovering their health. This also inspires us to continue relying on the strengths of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, keep abreast of the forefront of the times, and better serve the public.
Introduction to Medical Features:
1, Treatment of severe multiple trauma: These injuries involve multiple sites and organs and are extremely dangerous and critical, with every second counting during resuscitation. In the management of multiple trauma, emphasis is placed on integrated treatment of injuries to multiple areas, including the head, chest, abdomen, and bones, greatly shortening rescue time. The rational use of advanced concepts and measures such as restrictive fluid resuscitation, damage control, and endovascular interventional treatment has improved the treatment success rate for patients with multiple trauma. Currently, the in-hospital survival rate for severe multiple trauma has reached 97.10%, and the rescue success rate for near-fatal trauma has reached 49.31%, placing the department at a leading level in China.
2, Severe abdominal trauma: Emergency surgery for various types of intra-abdominal bleeding, including liver and spleen rupture, stomach and intestinal rupture, mesenteric rupture, and pancreatic transection.
3, Treatment of surgical acute abdominal conditions: Severe acute pancreatitis, gastrointestinal perforation, acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, suppurative cholangitis, intestinal obstruction, intestinal volvulus, incarcerated hernia, and other conditions requiring rapid diagnosis and timely surgery and treatment.
4, Patients who undergo elective surgery after conservative treatment during the acute phase, or who undergo second-stage surgery.
The intensive care unit (ICU) of the Department of Trauma and Emergency Care has comprehensive critical-care equipment and a medical and nursing team, including ventilators, continuous hemofiltration dialysis machines, bedside ultrasound, fiberoptic bronchoscopes, PICCO monitoring, and multimodule monitoring, and is also equipped with the corresponding medical and nursing team. It can provide one-stop treatment for patients with severe multiple trauma, various types of shock, severe acute pancreatitis, and multiple organ dysfunction.
