Ultrasound
The Department of Ultrasound of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital was established in the 1980s. After the efforts of several generations, it has now developed into a comprehensive department integrating ultrasound diagnosis and treatment, electrocardiographic diagnostic care, medical education, and scientific research, and has become one of the hospital’s developing disciplines. It is a training unit for master’s and doctoral graduate students of Tongji University.
I. Discipline Scale
At present, the department has a total of 28 medical technology, nursing, and clerical staff members, including 13 physicians: 1 chief physician, 3 associate chief physicians, and 8 attending physicians. One person has a doctoral degree, 5 have master’s degrees, 1 is currently pursuing a doctoral degree, and 2 are currently pursuing master’s degrees. A total of 3 people have obtained teaching titles, including 1 associate professor and doctoral supervisor and 2 lecturers.
Department members hold positions in multiple academic organizations, including 20 national-level positions and 24 provincial- and municipal-level positions, as detailed in Table 1. There are 7 positions at the level of deputy chairperson or above, as follows:

The Department of Ultrasound currently has 10 ultrasound examination rooms and 1 electrocardiogram examination room. The main work area is located on the second floor of Building No. 2. In addition, 2 ultrasound examination rooms have been opened in the basement of Building No. 3, achieving “one-door closure” for tuberculosis. The department provides abdominal, cardiac, vascular, superficial organ, and gynecological ultrasound examinations, as well as interventional ultrasound diagnosis and treatment services. It has also gradually improved its specialty clinics, establishing expert, general, interventional ultrasound specialty-disease, lower-extremity thrombosis screening, integrated tumor imaging, and lung tumor imaging-pathology MDT clinics, greatly facilitating patients’ access to medical care.
II. Professional Characteristics
On the basis of routine ultrasound and electrocardiography services, and relying on the hospital’s specialty in pulmonary diseases, the department has carried out a series of new technologies and projects, including
1. Ultrasound-guided needle biopsy of the lung, lymph nodes, liver, superficial masses, and other sites; ultrasound-guided puncture drainage of refractory pleural and abdominal effusions; and applications of new ultrasound technologies, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, elastography, image-fusion volume navigation, and speckle tracking, in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases, comprehensively enhancing the department’s clinical capabilities.
2. Application of bedside ultrasound in respiratory critical care, with technologies including lung ultrasound, cardiac color Doppler ultrasound, and vascular color Doppler ultrasound comprehensively applied to the assessment of cardiac, pulmonary, and circulatory function in critically ill patients.
3. In cooperation with the hospital’s lung transplantation clinical team, the department has carried out transesophageal echocardiography and perioperative ultrasound assessment for lung transplantation and ECMO, providing real-time visualized monitoring for multiple important clinical management processes.
With the continuous optimization of the department’s examination and diagnostic processes, work efficiency has continuously improved and the volume of services has steadily increased. The workload and implementation of new technologies from 2013 to 2022 are shown in Figure 1 and Table 2.

2022 National Continuing Education Course “The Fourth Training Course on New Advances in Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases and Ultrasound New Technology Forum”
The department has held multiple academic salons with distinctive characteristics, such as the “Ultrasound and Scientific Research” series of online salons, the “Interventional Ultrasound Salon,” the “Young Clinical Researcher Salon,” and more than 30 sessions of the “Lung Special Topic” online course. Their excellent content and distinctive characteristics have attracted extensive attention from the industry.
The department is a training unit for master’s and doctoral graduate students of Tongji University. Director Wang Yin serves as a master’s and doctoral supervisor. At present, the department has enrolled 1 master’s student and 2 doctoral students, and participates in the training of 3 master’s students. It has provided instruction to a total of 19 advanced-study students and 14 standardized resident trainees. The department has a strong atmosphere for teaching and scientific research; teaching and learning complement each other, enabling students to gain and acquire knowledge.
IV. Scientific Research Projects and Published Papers
The department has conducted in-depth clinical and basic research on pulmonary ultrasound, obtaining multiple National Natural Science Foundation of China and provincial- and ministerial-level scientific research projects. It has published a total of 45 scientific research papers, including 25 SCI research articles, with a highest IF of 29.146. This original research article, published in 2021 in the TOP imaging journal Radiology, was independently completed by the department team led by Director Wang Yin in its entirety, from design and implementation to data analysis and writing, and is an important milestone in the improvement of the scientific research level of the Department of Ultrasound of our hospital.
