Nuclear Medicine
The Department of Nuclear Medicine of Qingdao Municipal Hospital established an isotope room in 1972. In 1993, it introduced large-scale equipment, a SPECT instrument, and began radionuclide diagnosis and treatment; during the same period, it was renamed the Department of Nuclear Medicine. It currently has 13 beds, 5 doctors, 5 nurses, 3 people with postgraduate or higher educational qualifications, and 2 associate chief physicians, and possesses diagnostic and treatment equipment including a single-photon emission computed tomography system (SPECT/CT), a multifunctional radionuclide instrument, a thyroid function instrument, a 14C breath-test instrument, and other diagnostic and treatment equipment.
The scope of diagnosis and treatment includes radionuclide diagnosis (whole-body bone imaging, myocardial perfusion imaging, cerebral blood-flow perfusion imaging, thyroid imaging, tumor imaging, etc.; 14C breath testing; organ function measurement, etc.) and radionuclide therapy (iodine-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism, autonomously functioning thyroid adenomas, differentiated thyroid cancer and metastatic lesions; strontium-89 and Yunke for bone metastatic tumors, Yunke for osteoporosis, phosphorus-32 patch application for hemangiomas and keloids, etc.; 125I seed implantation for solid tumors such as lung cancer, prostate cancer and brain glioma).
Radionuclide interventional therapy is a specialty of the department. The department has Qingdao’s earliest and standardized nuclear medicine ward and is at the forefront in Qingdao in radionuclide diagnosis and treatment. Through collaboration with multiple disciplines, radionuclide intervention has achieved fruitful results in both research and clinical practice.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine is a training site for master’s students in medical imaging and nuclear medicine, with one master’s supervisor, and trains 1–2 master’s students each year. The department has consistently devoted itself to developing a rational talent echelon and reserve training, forming an efficient, stable and professionalized innovation talent echelon combining senior, middle-aged and young staff. It has established an effective competition mechanism, a proactive spirit of scientific research and innovation, and a united, cooperative, free and harmonious departmental atmosphere, maximizing the enthusiasm of team members and improving their innovative abilities. There are currently three projects under research. It undertakes teaching and internships for fourth- and fifth-year clinical undergraduates at the Medical College of Qingdao University; it undertakes internship assignments for the medical imaging specialty of Taian Medical College.
Management features:
(1)According to the principle of competency levels, the radionuclide diagnosis technology group, diagnosis group and radionuclide interventional treatment group were established separately; a system was established in which the department director has overall responsibility and group leaders have specific responsibility, together with an assessment mechanism linking quarterly evaluations to performance and employment.
(2)In strict accordance with all the hospital’s rules and regulations, rigorous medical and nursing routines, technical operating procedures and business work systems were established;
(3)A post responsibility system, various rules and regulations, and instrument and equipment use and management systems were established, with continuous improvement carried out according to the PDCA management system.
(4)The unity of technical services and physical and mental services is achieved; medical, psychological and social services are provided properly, medical quality and service standards are improved, and a medical model of a strong department and a strong hospital is established.
(5)Coordination and cooperation between personnel and between departments are continuously improved; an internal departmental communication system and a communication system with clinical departments are established, and relevant issues are discussed and solutions proposed.
