General Gynecology
General Gynecology
As the first specialized obstetrics and gynecology hospital in China, our hospital serves a large number of patients with a wide range of diseases, including many difficult and severe conditions. Gynecological subspecialties have therefore emerged in response to clinical needs. The current structure of the Department of General Gynecology is as follows: Professor Liu Xishi as advisor, Director Yi Xiaofang, Deputy Director Chen Yisong (in charge of clinical affairs), Deputy Director Lu Yuan (in charge of education and research), Wang Xiaojuan (clinical secretary), Zhao Ting (research secretary), Long Qiqi (quality control officer), as well as the chief resident and medical and nursing staff at all levels. The Huangpu and Yangpu campuses have a total of 143 beds, and clinical work is carried out under the leadership of 13 physicians responsible for clinical teams.
While primarily treating common benign gynecological diseases, including uterine fibroids, benign ovarian tumors, and precancerous lesions, the department has developed subspecialty directions in endometriosis, adenomyosis, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and reproductive tract malformations. It has also established specialized subspecialty clinics and promoted standardized diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of various benign gynecological diseases. At the same time, the department is committed to the focused treatment of difficult, critical, and severe diseases, including undiagnosed pelvic masses, deep infiltrating endometriosis, repair of urinary and fecal fistulas, and ectopic pregnancy. On the basis of the widespread application of laparoscopic techniques, the department continues to develop new technologies and procedures, including the use of single-port laparoscopy and transvaginal laparoscopy (NOTES) to reduce surgical trauma. It is also actively advancing new procedures such as conservative surgery for adenomyosis, function-preserving surgery for deep infiltrating endometriosis, pelvic floor functional reconstruction, and reconstruction of reproductive tract malformations.
The department has strong specialty expertise and a complete professional team. It has 11 chief physicians and 7 deputy chief physicians, including 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors, and has led 18 national-level research projects. The department organizes national-level training courses and large-scale conferences every year and publishes more than 10 SCI papers annually. Physicians at all levels actively participate in academic exchanges and lectures in China and abroad, sharing academic achievements. Their clinical capabilities and academic standards have been recognized by peers both domestically and internationally. In particular, the department has achieved significant results in research on endometriosis. Its research findings have reached advanced international and national levels, have been widely cited, and have attracted physicians and scholars from China and overseas to visit and study.

Teaching
The department has 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors and has trained a total of 17 doctoral students and 52 master's students, including current students and graduates. It emphasizes the joint development of clinical reasoning and research capabilities. The department attaches great importance to teaching, and most key members also serve as teaching leaders at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, undertaking activities such as large-class teaching, English-language teaching, bedside PBL teaching, and supervision of interns.
At the same time, the department actively participates in professional studies in the broader gynecology department, various clinical, research, and teaching training programs within the hospital, and communication and coordination with other departments in the hospital. It encourages the establishment of multidisciplinary teams both inside and outside the hospital. Professor Liu Xishi organizes a national-level training course every year to discuss new developments in the clinical and basic diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and related surgical techniques. The course is warmly welcomed by hundreds of trainees from across China.
Research
Members of the department have led 18 national-level research projects and participated in more than 30 national- and provincial/ministerial-level projects. The department encourages grant applications and manuscript writing, focuses on clinical diagnosis and treatment, promotes research translation, and develops its areas of strength—endometriosis and adenomyosis. Research directions include prediction models for recurrence in patients with endometriosis, treatment of pain in patients with adenomyosis, studies on the mechanisms underlying the development of endometriosis, and studies related to malignant transformation of endometriosis. On this basis, several physicians from the department have delivered oral presentations or presented posters at the World Congress on Endometriosis and Uterine Diseases, the European Endometriosis Congress, the Asian Congress on Endometriosis, and other meetings. They have received recognition from colleagues in China and abroad and have attracted endometriosis specialists from France, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Israel, and other countries to visit and exchange knowledge at the hospital. The department successfully bid to host the 14th World Congress on Endometriosis in 2020.
