Nephrology Department II
| Department Overview |--------------
The Department of Nephrology II of Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, is located at the Baoshan Campus of Huashan Hospital. Its distinctive three-in-one medical service model comprises a blood purification center with first-class facilities, a peritoneal dialysis center featuring APD (Automated Peritoneal Dialysis, automated peritoneal dialysis), and a renal ultrastructure diagnostic center, and it has established a regional kidney disease diagnosis and treatment center integrating medical care, education, and research.
| Specialty Features |--------------
It is currently the lead institution of the Baoshan District Blood Purification Quality Control Center. It has introduced first-class blood purification equipment and led the development and design of international-standard artificial-intelligence hemodialysis management software that can accurately predict the occurrence of intradialytic hypotension, greatly improving the management efficiency of the blood purification center; dialysis quality has reached a leading level nationally. Special blood purification technologies for critically ill patients are also a specialty of Department of Nephrology II, covering CRRT, plasma exchange, double plasma exchange, immunoadsorption, blood lipid purification, ECCO2R, and other modalities, with more than 300 treatment episodes annually. An APD automated peritoneal dialysis center has been established and equipped with a remote patient monitoring and management function (RPM). Using Internet technology, it has truly established a new real-time medical care model combining online healthcare + home dialysis, highlighting its efficiency, safety, and convenience. The geographic reach of patient management has extended as far as frontier regions. This new clinical technology has been granted a dedicated medical-insurance billing item. A renal ultrastructure pathological diagnosis center has been established to provide electron microscopy diagnosis of renal tissue, muscle, nerves, and other specimens, and is at a leading level in China. The highly educated talent team has a rational structure and has received multiple grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Health Commission funds, and Shenkang funds, as well as honors including the Renxin Yizhe Outstanding Specialist Physician Award, the Nomination Award, Outstanding Communist Youth League Cadre in Shanghai's medical and health system, Advanced Individual in the Fight Against COVID-19, First Prize in the Shanghai Quality Control Circle Competition, Second Prize in the National Quality Control Circle Competition, Fudan University Top Ten Outstanding Teams, and others.
In addition to the various daily expert outpatient clinics and the general nephrology clinic, the department also operates disease-specific outpatient clinics for membranous nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, CKD and CKD nutrition, renal injury due to autoimmune diseases, and tumor-related renal injury. The ward is equipped with a strong medical and nursing team for complex and critically ill patients and is proficient in all types of peritoneal dialysis catheter placement procedures, including direct insertion, laparoscopic catheter placement, transversalis fascia regional anesthesia, and other new techniques, as well as various complex arteriovenous fistula creation procedures, interventional procedures, renal biopsy, and more.
| Education and Research |--------------
The discipline has achieved gratifying results in its development and has one doctoral program. As one of the subspecialty discipline bases for Shanghai's standardized resident training and specialist training, it has developed a systematic model for cultivating clinical reasoning and practical skills over many years. Each year, the department trains 35-40 resident physicians, 1-2 specialist physicians, and 1-2 master's or doctoral students. It holds annual training courses that attract colleagues from across the country to discuss new theories and technologies and provide physicians from other hospitals with opportunities to study glomerulonephritis, peritoneal dialysis management, blood purification and vascular access, renal pathology, and other subjects. Training for physicians undertaking further study is conducted under a mentor-responsibility system, with clinical and research training models individually tailored. It covers all types of primary, secondary, and hereditary kidney diseases and, according to individual needs, extends to clinical cohort studies of specialized diseases and other areas.
