Pharmacy Department
The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University
The Department of Pharmacy of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in 1957. It has weathered half a century of challenges, brought together the hard work and wisdom of several generations, and has now developed into a professional technical department integrating drug supply assurance, pharmacy administration, clinical pharmacy services, research, and teaching. The Department is the National Clinical Pharmacist Training Base, the Chongqing Branch of the National Antimicrobial Drug Monitoring Network, an institution affiliated with the Chongqing Municipal Pharmacy Administration Quality Control Center, the Chongqing Blood Drug Concentration Monitoring Center, and the Chongqing Rational Drug Use Monitoring Center. Over the past three years, more than 20 research projects have been approved, including 6 national-level projects; the Department has received 1 First Prize of the Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Award and published more than 60 papers, including 25 SCI papers, with the highest impact factor for a single paper reaching 19.3. It has won more than 20 awards, including the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the National Hospital Pharmacy Administration Excellence Award, the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the China Hospital Management Award, the Cross-Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association’s “Most Innovative Award,” and the Chongqing Outstanding Youth Civilization Award. By accelerating the construction of clinical pharmacy service platforms and technical systems, the Department has achieved notable results in transforming and upgrading pharmacy services and has taken a leading role in the overall advancement and development of regional clinical pharmacy. It has focused on developing the key clinical pharmacy specialty and successfully applied for the National Clinical Key Specialty (Clinical Pharmacy) Construction Project. It currently has 14 subspecialties, including parenteral and enteral nutrition, antineoplastic drugs, pain-treatment medications, and medications for the immune system, which have reached an advanced level in China. It successfully applied for the National Clinical Key Specialty (Clinical Pharmacy) Construction Project, as well as the first, second, and third batches of Chongqing Municipal Key Clinical Pharmacy Specialty Construction Projects. It has cultivated 3 high-level young and middle-aged medical professionals in Chongqing Municipality. Focusing on specialty-specific technologies, it has continuously enhanced its clinical application capabilities. It has vigorously developed the therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) technology platform, implemented a “one-stop” best clinical practice for precision medication, and become a joint applicant for the National Key R&D Program project “Development of an Integrated Application Demonstration System for Precision Medicine.” It established ERAS clinical pharmacotherapy and surgical pharmacy technologies, improving the surgical department’s capacity to diagnose and treat high-risk surgical patients and provide services; became China’s first orthopedic ERAS-MDT joint ward-round team; had its technology promoted to more than 100 hospitals nationwide; and received the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. Demonstrating its benchmark status, it opened a new chapter in pharmacy administration. It optimized and standardized the medication-use structure, forming a “1+X” medication model centered on essential medicines. As the regional lead institution, it organized and participated in drafting the Chinese Pharmacists Association’s “Chinese Expert Consensus on the Management of Drugs Procured through Nationally Organized Centralized Procurement in Medical Institutions.” It improved and implemented systems related to drug quality assurance and medication safety, raised the awareness and ability of medical, pharmaceutical, nursing, and technical personnel to prevent medication errors, and implemented whole-process management covering prescription writing, dispensing, drug administration, and medication use. It led the formulation of the national standard “Pharmacy Administration—Adverse Drug Event Management—Handling of Drug Quality Problems” (T/CHAS 20-4-11-3, 2024). By leveraging its benchmark role, it led regional pharmacy administration quality control and, as an institution affiliated with the Chongqing Pharmacy Administration Quality Control Center, led the formulation of Chongqing Municipality’s assessment standard for rational drug use, receiving the National Hospital Pharmacy Administration Excellence Award. It optimized the medical service model and improved the quality and effectiveness of medical services. (I) It established an in-hospital “three-medical linkage” system and, through rational drug-use services and management conducted through medical-pharmaceutical collaboration, raised the level of rational drug use. (II) It was the first in China to propose and implement the “Medication Safety Pharmacist System,” effectively strengthening medication safety management, improving the level of rational drug use, and safeguarding medical quality and safety and the people’s health rights and interests. As a pilot institution for the National Health Commission’s MSO program, it participated in formulating relevant national-level industry standards and diagnostic and treatment specifications and guidelines, developed the RCMR scoring system, and was awarded 2 key projects under the Chongqing Municipal Special Program for Science and Technology Innovation. (III) It was the first in China to innovatively establish the “all-in-one” nutritional pharmaceutical care model, forming a nutrition support team (NST) composed of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, nutritionists, and others, and providing individualized nutritional pharmaceutical care services for more than 4000 patient-visits each year. It was approved for the first batch of Chongqing Municipal Key Clinical Pharmacy Specialty Construction Projects (Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition specialty), and its service technologies have been promoted nationwide. It promoted technological innovation and transfer and established a relatively well-developed “Smart Pharmacy” system. The “Smart Pharmacy” system includes Internet of Things + Pharmacy, Smart Technology + Pharmacy, and AI Pharmacy, and has established the “Pharmacist Link” remote pharmacy service brand. It successfully applied for the “Standardized Construction Base for Smart Pharmacy in Medical Institutions” (China Association for the Promotion of Human Health Science and Technology) and carried out the project to compile the “Technical Guidance Opinions for the Construction of Smart Pharmacies in Chongqing Hospitals.” The “Pharmacy Assistance to Tibet” initiative helped local pharmacy service levels achieve the historic feat of “leaping forward by several decades.” It carried out the “Pharmacy Assistance to Tibet” initiative in a solid and sustained manner, achieving a transition from “blood transfusion” to “blood production.” In Qamdo City, it helped build a “Grade III Class A” hospital, completely ending the history of the eastern Tibet region having no prefecture-level “Grade III Class A” hospital. It helped Qamdo People’s Hospital gradually establish a plateau pharmacy service system and set up the first plateau clinical pharmacology laboratory, which was successfully approved as a key laboratory of the Tibet Autonomous Region; trained a group of clinical pharmacists capable of providing individualized medication services in plateau settings; and developed 4 key projects in Chongqing Municipality and the Tibet Autonomous Region, with total funding exceeding RMB 10 million.
