In 2018, it was renamed the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine; in August of the same year, it was recognized by the National PCCM Review Committee as a PCCM-compliant institution.
The department has a highly qualified professional and technical team. It currently has 20 physicians, including 8 chief physicians and 1 deputy chief physician. Seventeen have master's degrees or above, including 3 doctorates and 2 doctoral candidates. There are 22 nurses, including 6 senior nurses, 14 professional nurses, and 2 nurses. There is 1 senior medical technologist and 1 medical technologist. Academic appointments include membership in the Lung Cancer Group of the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and in the Allergology Society; membership in the Respiratory Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; vice-chairmanships of the Internal Medicine Society, Respiratory Branch, and Allergology Society of Liaoning Province; and chair-elect of the Dalian Respiratory Professional Committee, among others. Faculty members serve on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases and the Chinese Journal of Lung Cancer. The department has undertaken 1 project under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s 863 Program and multiple projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. It has received 4 Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Medical Association, and Liaoning Province, as well as 3 Dalian municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards; it has published more than 100 papers, including 35 SCI-indexed papers; and it holds 6 national invention patents.
The department includes an ICU ward, a ward specializing in respiratory infectious diseases, a ward specializing in chronic airway diseases, a respiratory medicine specialty outpatient clinic, a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic for small pulmonary nodules (MDT), an allergy outpatient clinic, an allergy testing laboratory, a pulmonary function testing room, a nebulized inhalation treatment room, a respiratory endoscopy room, and a sleep-related breathing disorder examination and treatment room. In recent years, the department has developed new technologies for respiratory endoscopic diagnosis and interventional treatment. In 2015, it introduced ultrasound bronchoscopy-guided puncture technology, and in 2017 it introduced medical thoracoscopy. These advances have greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of difficult diseases such as lung cancer, sarcoidosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and pleural mesothelioma. Whole-lung lavage is used to treat pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, and rigid bronchoscopy combined with flexible bronchoscopy, cryotherapy, electrotomy, and other technologies is used to treat benign airway stenosis and other conditions.
<Specialty Overview>
The respiratory infectious diseases ward was established in June 2013. The department has a highly qualified technical team and currently has 4 professors, including 1 doctoral supervisor and 3 master's supervisors, 1 deputy chief physician, 4 attending physicians, and 11 nurses. The department director is Professor Wang Zhenshan, Doctor of Medicine and master's supervisor. He is a Standing Committee member of the 7th Committee of the Respiratory Diseases Subspecialty Society of the Liaoning Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Deputy Head of the Intervention Group of the 9th Committee of the Respiratory Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association, a council member of the 10th Council of the Dalian Medical Association, and chair-elect of the Respiratory Medicine Specialty Branch of the Dalian Medical Association. He has received the Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and the Dalian Science and Technology Progress Award.
<Specialty Diagnostic and Treatment Scope> Respiratory infectious diseases, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, chronic cough, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, and others.
<Specialty Technical Features>
1. Diagnosis and treatment of respiratory infectious diseases: Since 1993, the department has led more than 50 clinical studies of antimicrobial drugs and participated in multiple domestic clinical studies of new antimicrobial drugs, accumulating extensive experience in anti-infective treatment.
2. Diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer: Electronic bronchoscopy, ultrasound bronchoscopy, and medical thoracoscopy are used to determine the nature and pathological type of lesions, providing a basis for individualized treatment. Multidisciplinary consultations are conducted for small pulmonary nodules to provide patients with appropriate follow-up and treatment strategies. The research team led by Professor Wang Qi applies new technologies such as microfluidics and chips to focus on basic and clinical research into lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, and undertakes national key and major research projects as well as National Natural Science Foundation projects. The Lung Cancer Translational Medicine Center has particular expertise in early lung cancer screening and individualized treatment.
3. COPD and smoking cessation guidance: Smoking cessation lectures are provided, smoking cessation is guided, and patients with COPD receive health guidance and standardized treatment.
4. Diagnosis and treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic cough: Treatment measures are selected according to different causes, and asthma is treated in a standardized manner to achieve long-term asthma control.
5. Diagnosis and treatment of interstitial lung disease: High-resolution CT, autoimmunity antibody testing, and lung biopsy are combined to perform differential diagnosis of interstitial lung disease and guide treatment.
6. Standardized diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism, with guidance on anticoagulant therapy.
7. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome: For patients with nighttime snoring and daytime sleepiness, polysomnography (PSG) and portable sleep screening devices are used for examination, and noninvasive ventilation treatment is guided.
8. Respiratory endoscopic diagnostic and treatment technologies: Electronic bronchoscopy, ultrasound bronchoscopy, and medical thoracoscopy are used to diagnose and treat respiratory diseases. Rigid bronchoscopy combined with flexible bronchoscopy, balloon dilation, cryotherapy, electrotomy, and other technologies is used to treat benign airway stenosis.
<Specialty Education and Research>
Research: Professor Wang Qi has successively led 1 Ministry of Science and Technology 863 Program project, 1 key project of the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 major-program cultivation project, and 2 general projects, among others, with research funding totaling nearly 10 million yuan. The department has received 4 Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Medical Association, and Liaoning Province, as well as 3 Dalian municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards; it has published more than 100 related papers, including more than 35 SCI-indexed papers, with a cumulative impact factor of nearly 100 points; it holds 6 national invention patents; and it has participated in drafting 3 documents, including the Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary nodules.
