Hematology Department 1
<Department Overview>
The Department of Hematology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 1991. Through the efforts of several generations, represented by Professors Mao Yufang, Song Zhenlan, Lian Shimei, and Yan Jinsong, it has developed into a doctoral and master's degree-granting site in Internal Medicine (Hematology) of Dalian Medical University; a standardized residency training base of the National Health Commission; the Liaoning Provincial Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Medical Center; the Key Laboratory of Clinical Translational Medicine Research for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation of Liaoning Province; the Diamond Bay Institute of Hematology; a Grade I key medical discipline of Dalian; and the Dalian Key Laboratory of Hematological Diseases. It is also a hematopoietic stem cell collection institution for the China Marrow Donor Program and the Taiwan Tzu Chi Marrow Donor Registry.
The Department of Hematology comprises 5 subspecialties and 1 provincial key laboratory, with 14 class-100 laminar-flow rooms and 156 permanent beds. The subspecialties are Hematology I (bone marrow transplantation), Hematology II (lymphoma and myeloma), Hematology III (leukemia), Hematology IV (red-cell diseases and coagulation/bleeding disorders), and the Diamond Bay Department of Hematology (post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and comprehensive hematology), while the provincial key laboratory is responsible for translational research on hematopoietic stem cells and genetic testing for hematological diseases. The department currently has 30 physicians, more than 90 nurses, and 5 laboratory staff; all hold master's degrees or higher, including 15 doctors. Since hematopoietic stem cell transplantation began in 2014, nearly 600 transplants have been completed, with more than 100 annually. The number of transplants ranks first in Liaoning and second among the three northeastern provinces. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the main approach; autologous and cord-blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are also performed. Treated diseases include all types of hematological disorders, such as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, severe aplastic anemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, congenital hereditary diseases in children, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and myelofibrosis.
The department has strong research capabilities and routinely performs cytogenetics, genetic diagnosis, immunological testing, and other diagnostic techniques. Research platforms and methods including whole-transcriptome sequencing, proteomic analysis, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models of human leukemia/lymphoma have been established to study the pathogenesis and treatment mechanisms of hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Bone marrow transplantation guided by new fusion genes in leukemia as novel molecular markers has also been studied, yielding substantial results. In recent years, doctors with doctoral degrees have accounted for more than 50% of the department. It has undertaken 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 1 key Liaoning Provincial research and development project, 8 Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Foundation and doctoral start-up projects, 1 key clinical construction project under the reform of provincial-level hospitals, and 1 Dalian science and technology innovation project, with total funding exceeding RMB 10 million. Team members have published more than 20 English-language papers; the highest impact factor of a single paper was 19, and the cumulative impact factor exceeds 300.
Remaining true to its original aspiration and striving forward, the Department of Hematology has developed a medical, nursing, and research team with bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as its major clinical focus, distinctive subspecialties, and a well-structured personnel echelon. Its diagnosis and treatment of hematological diseases is approaching the advanced domestic level, enabling it to provide high-quality medical services to the local population.
<Hematology I Department—Specialty Overview>
The Hematology I Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University (bone marrow transplantation) was established on April 1, 2014. It is the Liaoning Provincial Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Medical Center, the Key Laboratory of Clinical Translational Medicine Research for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation of Liaoning Province, and a member institution for hematopoietic stem cell collection of the China Marrow Donor Program. It has 8 class-100 purified laminar-flow rooms and three dedicated teams: bone marrow transplantation physicians, transplant nursing staff, and transplant laboratory technicians. With the ambitious and excellence-oriented spirit of its transplant medical staff, advanced medical equipment, and sophisticated technology, it has become a department with substantial clinical diagnostic and treatment expertise and a strong reputation and influence.
Basic information: The department currently consists of 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 1 attending physician, 2 resident physicians, and 10 nurses.
<Specialty Diagnostic and Treatment Scope>
Bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
<Specialty Technical Features>
Bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the department’s peak diagnostic and treatment technology. It implements tiered diagnosis and treatment and a two-way referral system, and accepts and undertakes bone marrow transplantation for difficult, severe, and refractory malignant hematological diseases. Bone marrow transplantation has raised long-term survival in hematological diseases to 70%, changed the outdated notion that hematological disease means “financial ruin and loss of both family and livelihood,” and saved the lives of more patients with severe hematological disease.
Its main specialties are: 1) bone marrow transplantation for relapsed or refractory acute leukemia; 2) bone marrow transplantation for type I severe aplastic anemia after failure of ATG treatment; 3) bone marrow transplantation for type II severe aplastic anemia converted from aggravated chronic aplastic anemia; 4) bone marrow transplantation for myelodysplastic syndrome; 5) bone marrow transplantation for malignant lymphoma and myeloma; 6) bone marrow transplantation for pediatric hematologic malignancies; and 7) bone marrow transplantation for some rare congenital hereditary diseases. Among haploidentical bone marrow transplant recipients, the youngest was 11 months old and has now been cured for 4 years; the oldest was 68 years old, demonstrating the department’s strong bone marrow transplantation capabilities. The medical staff of Hematology I will continue to work together to provide scientific and professional bone marrow transplantation for patients with hematological diseases.
Research
The department undertakes 2 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and multiple major research projects of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education and the Liaoning Provincial Natural Science Foundation. It has published more than 30 papers, including more than 10 SCI-indexed papers.
Teaching
The department provides teaching for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and visiting physicians, emphasizing individualized instruction and clinical skills training. Nearly 40 master’s students have been trained.
<Objective and Philosophy>
Safeguard patients’ lives and health with superb bone marrow transplantation techniques.
