Urological Surgery Department 3
Discipline Introduction
The Department of Urology of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was founded in 1954 by Professor Huang Hanxing, a renowned Chinese urology expert. In 1969, it moved south with Dalian Medical College to Zunyi. During that period, it was nationally at an advanced level in the research and treatment of stones, testicular transplantation, functional reconstruction of bladder exstrophy, reconstruction of the external genitalia, and other techniques. It returned to Dalian in 1983. Under Professor Ye Chengtong, reconstruction of the Department of Urology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical College began. Through the joint efforts of senior experts including Professors Liu Yongji, Li Yintian, and Fan Zhilu, it continued to maintain its technological advantages and academic influence in the province. Since the 1990s, it has successively introduced a number of leading minimally invasive techniques in Dalian, including transurethral endoscopic minimally invasive surgery, simple laparoscopic procedures for varicocele and cryptorchidism, and ureteroscopic surgery. Since entering the 21st century, while maintaining the advantages of traditional open surgery, it has vigorously expanded the scope of minimally invasive surgery. Retroperitoneoscopic treatment of renal tumors began in 2004; percutaneous nephrolithotomy in 2005; laparoscopic surgery of the lower urinary tract in 2011; and in 2019 it was the first in southern Liaoning to perform da Vinci robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. After nearly 20 years of mature development, laparoscopic technology now covers the treatment of all urological diseases. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical cystectomy, laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery for complex renal tumors, laparoscopic reconstruction for urinary-tract malformations, laparoscopic total pelvic organ resection, laparoscopic retroperitoneal and inguinal lymph-node dissection, da Vinci robot-assisted treatment of complex renal cancer with vena-caval tumor thrombus, combined dual-endoscopic treatment of complex renal stones, and enucleation of giant benign prostatic hyperplasia have become routine procedures, and have reached an advanced level nationally.
The department currently has 89 authorized beds and is divided into four wards: urological tumors and robotics; minimally invasive urology and stones; urological tumors and the lower urinary tract; and andrology, male reproduction, intimate aesthetics, and sexual medicine. It has 26 doctors, including 9 professors and 8 associate professors; all hold at least a master’s degree. There are 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master’s supervisors. The department’s expert team and backbone staff have study or advanced-training experience at renowned medical centers in Europe and the United States, including Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University, Cleveland, the University of Pennsylvania, and Heidelberg in Germany, as well as at leading domestic hospitals. Annual outpatient volume exceeds 30,000 visits and annual inpatient surgical volume exceeds 3,000 procedures, of which major and intermediate operations account for 70%; minimally invasive procedures exceed 90%.
In recent years, under the leadership of President Liu Zhiyu, academic director Li Xiancheng, and subspecialty directors Professors Yang Bo, Jiang Tao, and Wang Liang, the discipline has achieved rapid development and substantial progress. It has successively obtained the Dalian Key Laboratory of Prostate Cancer and the Engineering Research Center for Integrated Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Technology of Urological Tumors of Liaoning Province. It has also become a national committee-member institution of the Surgical Branch and Andrology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the chair institution of the Andrology Branch and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association, and the institution designated as the incoming chair of the Dalian Urological Surgery branch.
The urology team of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University has conducted extensive basic and clinical research on bladder cancer, prostate cancer, renal cancer, urinary stones, and the pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It undertakes multiple national-, provincial-, and municipal-level research projects. The related clinical studies “Clinical application of orthotopic neobladder after laparoscopic radical cystectomy,” “Nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy,” and “Application of fascial-plane anatomy in laparoscopic radical cystectomy” respectively received provincial and municipal science and technology progress awards. Its tumor MDT team has entered the list of China’s top 100 hospital urology departments. The stone team established the Northeast China Stone Prevention and Treatment Base—Dalian Center; the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University is also the Collaborative Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Urinary Stones of the China Urinary Stone Alliance. It was the first in the province to perform prostate enucleation and male urethral reconstruction, and established Dalian’s first perioperative pelvic-floor rehabilitation treatment center. Every year, many departmental experts are invited to lecture and exchange surgical experience on high-level domestic academic platforms. The “Minimally Invasive Xinghai Summit Forum,” held continuously for five years, attracts many renowned experts from across China for guidance and exchange each year and has become an influential branded conference in China.
Specialty Introduction
The Ward of Urology 3 was established in June 2013 and has 25 open beds. In addition to the urological andrology treatment room and endoscopy examination center shared by the discipline, it also has a urodynamics examination room and a pelvic-floor disease diagnosis and treatment center. The ward specializes in lower-urinary-tract and pelvic-floor diseases and features minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. In 2013, it was the first in Dalian to perform transurethral plasma enucleation of the prostate. Around benign prostatic hyperplasia, it developed a complete standardized theoretical system and operating procedure and promoted them throughout the province. In 2019, “Clinical expansion research on the combined application of transurethral plasma prostate enucleation and other procedures” received the Clinical Application Technology Award of the Liaoning Medical Science and Technology Awards; “Clinical promotion of the technical pathway for transurethral plasma prostate enucleation in Liaoning Province” received the Third Prize of the Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. Building on years of experience in traditional laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and radical surgery for bladder and prostate cancer, it successfully performed robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in 2020, forming a technical profile in which the resectoscope, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery advance together as the “three carriages.” Other representative technologies include systematic treatment of female stress urinary incontinence, surgical treatment of urinary fistula, male urethral reconstruction, and perioperative pelvic-floor rehabilitation.
As a specialized department, since its establishment Urology 3, under Director Yang Bo, has consistently adhered to the medical philosophy of putting patients first and service foremost. It continuously learns new technologies and develops new skills, striving to build a united, cooperative, enthusiastic, energetic, and practice-oriented (LUPA) team.
