Ruijin Hospital (瑞金医院) receives international patients through its International Medical Department (国际医疗部), whose outpatient clinic is on the B1 and ground floors of Building 10 at the main campus, 197 Ruijin No. 2 Road (瑞金二路197号), Huangpu District. It is open Monday to Saturday, 8 am–5 pm; book on +86 21 6467 8970 (staffed Monday to Saturday, 8:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:30) or by email at vip@rjh.com.cn[1][2]. The hospital lists Shaanxi South Road (Line 1) and Dapuqiao (Line 9) as its metro stations[4]; Line 1 from Shanghai Railway Station and Line 10 from Hongqiao both reach Shaanxi South Road without a change[16][17]. The hospital's profile, departments and sources are on our Ruijin Hospital page; this guide covers how to use it as a visitor.

In 2024 Ruijin was one of 13 Shanghai public hospitals named international medical tourism pilot units — a municipal program, not a ranking — and under the pilot it opened an intensive care unit for its international department[12].
Campuses
| Campus | Address | What to know |

Only the main site publishes an international department. For Jiading and Jinshan we found no international-service details, so ask before booking there.
The International Medical Department (国际医疗部)
According to a 2024 Xinmin Weekly feature, the department was founded in 1998 and has its own outpatient clinic, inpatient ward and health management center; its director said it also has its own examination area, so most tests can be done without leaving the building[11]. Under the 2024 pilot it also opened an international ICU[12].
| Outpatient clinic | B1 and ground floor, Building 10, main campus[1][2] |
| Inpatient wards | 2024 listing: 19F and 20F of Building 10, 12F of Building 9[1]; 2025 listing: floors 9, 18 and 19 of Building 10 and floor 11 of Building 9[2] — confirm on admission |
| Emergency | Ground floor, Building 5 (2025 listing)[2] |
| Hours | Monday to Saturday, 8 am–5 pm[1][2] |
| Phone | +86 21 6467 8970, staffed Monday to Saturday 8:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:30[1] |
| vip@rjh.com.cn[1][2] | |
| Languages | English (2024 listing)[1]; English, French, Japanese, Korean and Nepali (2025 listing)[2] |
| Direct billing | The 2024 listing names 19 insurers and assistance companies, among them Allianz Partners, Bupa (British United Provident Association), Cigna & CMB Health, MSH China, Ping An Health, AIA and Generali China Life[1] |
A listed language is not a promise of an interpreter at every visit — say which language you need when you book.
What the "specialty departments" list means
The 2024 government listing names 29 "specialty departments" for Ruijin's international service: general practice, radiology, infectious diseases, neurology, laboratory medicine, clinical nursing, the cancer center, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, emergency medicine, nephrology, cardiology, pediatric gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology, rheumatology, critical care, anesthesiology, nuclear medicine, an endocrinology key laboratory, gastroenterology, burns, general surgery, dermatology, thoracic surgery, ultrasound, orthopedics, traditional Chinese medicine and the Lifelong Health Management Center[1]. Our directory maps ten of them to its filters: cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, respiratory and TCM.
Read this list carefully. It closely follows Ruijin's nationally designated key clinical specialties — the hospital's 2023 budget disclosure lists 22 such projects, from gastroenterology, anesthesiology and critical care to burns, geriatrics and TCM oncology[7] — and includes items such as "clinical nursing" and a "key laboratory" that are not clinics you can book. It maps the hospital's strengths, not a timetable of international clinics. Ask the department which specialists hold sessions for international patients on your dates.
Ordinary outpatient or the international department?
The two tiers share the same hospital and specialists but differ in price, language and booking; the general picture is in international departments explained.
How the ordinary clinics work
From the hospital's patient guide[5]:
- Everything is by appointment. Same-day registration is possible only for slots left unbooked.
- Booking windows: expert slots open 4 weeks ahead at 7:30; ordinary and specialty/disease clinics 12 weeks ahead at 7:30.
- Real-name: the patient's original resident ID card (身份证), a contact phone number and the hospital card; someone booking for you must also show their own ID card.
- Channels: the 1F service center and nurse stations, in-clinic booking, self-service kiosks, the Shenkang hospital line 96999176, the WeChat account "上海瑞金医院" or the Alipay mini-program "瑞金医院" after binding a card, community doctors, and booking at discharge.
- Hotline: +86 21 6466 4140, daily 7:30–17:00. Outpatient registration runs 6:30–16:30; emergency is 24 hours.
- Fees (registration only; the table is dated 2019 and still online in October 2026): ¥25 for an ordinary or specialty clinic, ¥40 (associate chief) or ¥50 (chief) for expert clinics, ¥30 for emergency; named-expert and weekend special-needs (特需) clinics in tiers between ¥68 and ¥1,000. Tests, treatment and drugs are charged separately.
We found no public price list for the International Medical Department; ask for a written estimate.
Which route fits you
- Chinese citizens living abroad who hold a valid resident ID card: the ordinary channels are designed for you, exactly as for local patients[5].
- Foreign nationals, including ethnic Chinese with foreign passports: the published booking rules name only the resident ID card[5]. Plan on the International Medical Department, or ask at the 1F service center which channel accepts a passport. See your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID.
- Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents: the same uncertainty applies to Home Return Permits and Taiwan compatriot permits — ask before relying on WeChat or Alipay booking. See Hong Kong and Macau residents' cross-border care and Taiwan residents' care in the mainland.
Booking the International Medical Department
- Email vip@rjh.com.cn with your passport name, date of birth, nationality, a short medical summary, key reports (translated summaries help — see getting your medical records translated), preferred dates, language and how you will pay. The inquiry letter tool drafts this in English and Chinese.
- Or call +86 21 6467 8970 during staffed hours, China time[1].
- Get written confirmation of date, time, building and floor, the specialist if one is named, documents to bring and a cost estimate.
- Using insurance? Confirm your insurer is on the direct-billing list and whether a guarantee of payment is needed[1].
Getting there (main campus)
| From | Route (stations from official sources) |
|---|---|
| Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站) | Line 1 toward Xinzhuang, 5 stops to Shaanxi South Road — no change[16][18] |
| Hongqiao Railway Station / Hongqiao Airport T2 or T1 | Line 10: Shaanxi South Road is the 11th stop from Hongqiao Railway Station — no change[17][18] |
| Pudong International Airport T1/T2 | Line 2 into the city, change to Line 10 at East Nanjing Road for Shaanxi South Road[16][17] |
| Line 9 | Dapuqiao station, also listed by the hospital[4] |
| City buses | 17, 24, 36, 41, 96, 104, 128, 146, 780, 786, Tunnel Line 1 and Tunnel Line 8[4] |
How far from Shanghai Railway Station? The hospital gives no distance. What can be sourced: Shanghai Railway Station and Shaanxi South Road are five stops apart on Line 1, about 5.7 km apart by the line's published station chainage[16][19]. For the walk from the station exit to the hospital gate and for road distance, check a map app on the day.
For the Jiading and Jinshan campuses we found no official metro directions; use a map app and confirm with the hospital. For metro tickets, ride-hailing and taxis, see getting around.
Ruijin Hainan Hospital in Boao: how it relates
Ruijin Hainan Hospital (上海交通大学医学院附属瑞金医院海南医院, also Hainan Boao Research Hospital) is a separate hospital in the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan — see our Ruijin Hainan Hospital page.
- Who runs it. The Hainan provincial government is the construction body, Shanghai's Ruijin Hospital is the "output hospital" (输出医院) and Hainan Provincial People's Hospital is the supporting hospital[13][14]. It keeps its own accounts, and the Hainan government has entrusted Shanghai Ruijin with running it[15].
- What it is. It began trial operation in December 2021 as the pilot zone's first public hospital, with 500 approved beds[14], and was approved in 2022 as a national regional medical center project focused on oncology and hematology, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and neuroscience[13].
- International services. We found no published international patient department or foreign-language service there; a 2024 Xinmin Weekly feature reported that international medical tourism services would also be offered there in the future[11]. Outpatient enquiries and booking: +86 898 6262 1907, Monday to Friday 8:30–12:00 and 14:30–17:30[20].
- Why people go. The pilot zone has special rules on access to certain drugs and devices not yet approved elsewhere in China — explained in Hainan Boao Lecheng. Being seen in Boao is not the same as being seen in Shanghai: book and pay there separately, and ask how records and follow-up would be shared.
Before you go
- Documents: the original document you booked with (passport, Home Return Permit or Taiwan compatriot permit), records and imaging with translated summaries, a medication list, and your insurance card or guarantee of payment.
- Paying: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card and carry a backup — see payments with Alipay and WeChat.
- Staying: the main campus is served by Lines 1 and 10 at Shaanxi South Road and Line 9 at Dapuqiao, so a hotel on one of those lines gives you a direct ride — see accommodation near hospitals and Shanghai.
Honest limits
- Contact details, floors and languages differ between the 2024 and 2025 official listings; the confirmation from the department is what counts.
- The department's phone line is staffed only Monday to Saturday, with a midday break; outside those hours, use email — and in an emergency, go to the emergency department (see emergency in China).
- A listed department or language is not a guaranteed specialist or interpreter on your dates.
- Plan follow-up at home before you fly — see medical records and follow-up. If you are not fit to fly, do not travel for a consultation.
Next steps
- Open the Ruijin Hospital profile and the Ruijin Hainan Hospital profile.
- Compare with Huashan: /compare?ids=ruijin-hospital-shanghai,huashan-hospital-fudan-shanghai, or read Huashan Hospital for foreigners.
- See more options in Shanghai hospitals for foreigners and the directory: /hospitals?city=shanghai, for example endocrinology in Shanghai.
- Draft your first email with the inquiry letter tool, then let the planner fit appointments, travel and recovery together.
