Ключевые сведения
The military hospital treats civilians and foreigners, but it is not on Beijing's foreign-language hospital lists. What is true, what is not, and how to book.
- Can foreigners be treated at Beijing 301 Hospital?: Yes. The hospital's own patient guide explains that foreign nationals can book through the 114 platform and collect their appointment at a staffed window with their passport.
- Does 301 Hospital have an English-speaking international department?: We could not verify one from official sources in October 2026, and 301 is not among the hospitals listed in Beijing's official medical guide for foreigners.
- How do I book an appointment at 301 Hospital?: Non-emergency care is by appointment only.
- Do I need an S2 visa to get treatment at 301 Hospital?: Not necessarily. S2 is the short-term private-affairs visa that embassies use for medical trips, but holders of ordinary passports from visa-free countries can enter for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, transit or exchanges.

Yes — foreigners can be treated at Beijing's 301 Hospital, the Chinese PLA General Hospital (中国人民解放军总医院). The hospital's own patient guide tells foreign nationals to book through the 114 platform and collect the appointment at a staffed window with their passport, and civilian patients without Beijing medical insurance register as self-pay (全费)[1]. What you should not count on is a verified English-language international desk: 301 is not among the hospitals in Beijing's official medical guide for foreigners[9][10], and we could not confirm a current international department, phone line or email from an official source in October 2026. Plan for a Chinese-language process — or pick a Beijing hospital with a published international department.
What "301" means today
- The name. The hospital was renamed "301 Hospital" in August 1954 and became the PLA General Hospital in June 1957; "301" stayed in everyday use[6]. It describes itself as a large-scale modern comprehensive hospital founded in 1953[5].
- Several medical centers, not one building. A 2018 reorganisation grouped the hospital into the First to Eighth Medical Centers, the Hainan Hospital and several medical districts in Beijing[6]; PLA Daily describes 8 medical centers as management units and 21 clinical divisions[7].
- The main campus. "301" usually means the site at 28 Fuxing Road, Haidian District (复兴路28号)[4], home of the First Medical Center. The other medical centers are at other addresses, and the hospital's own patient guides are organised centre by centre[3] — check which medical center and campus your doctor works at before you book a hotel.
- A military hospital that also treats civilians. Military patients have their own registration windows and a priority queue for admission[2]; civilian patients use the general outpatient system described below.
How to book at 301 (First Medical Center)
These rules come from the First Medical Center's patient guide, published in May 2024[1]:
- Appointment only. Apart from the emergency department, there is no on-site registration for outpatient clinics.
- Five booking channels: the WeChat service account "解放军总医院医疗健康服务" (up to 15 days ahead); the Beijing booking line 010-114 (up to 28 days); in-hospital kiosks (15 days); the websites and kiosks of ICBC, ABC, Bank of China and CCB; and the doctor's own workstation for follow-ups (28 days).
- Release time: new slots appear at 7:00 every day, for a rolling 14-day window. Registration is real-name.
- Without a Chinese ID: foreign nationals can book through 114, then bring the passport to a staffed window to collect the number. For 114 bookings, collect morning appointments before 11:00 and afternoon ones before 16:30, or the booking lapses.
- Fee type: choose "全费" (self-pay) unless you hold Beijing medical insurance with 301 as your designated hospital.
- Cancelling: cancel before the clinic opens (8:00 for ordinary, 8:30 for expert clinics). Three no-shows or cancellations within a month put you on a booking-restriction list.
- Hours: ordinary clinics 8:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:30; expert clinics 8:30–12:00 and 14:30–17:30. Clinics also run on weekends and public holidays, 8:30–12:00 and 14:30–17:30.
English booking: when the city named the 15 hospitals or campuses with full English booking on the 114 platform in October 2025, 301 was not among them[11]. Expect Chinese-language menus; a Chinese-speaking friend can book for you under your passport details.
The VIP (特需) clinic
VIP slots can be booked in the WeChat account or taken on the day at the VIP registration desk on the 10th floor of the outpatient building. Registration fees in the 2024 guide: CNY 100 for an ordinary VIP slot, CNY 200 for an associate chief physician, CNY 300 for a chief physician[1]. These cover registration only — tests and treatment are extra. A VIP slot buys access and time, not a promise of English.
The English-service question: what we could and could not verify
- City lists: 301 is not among the 17 major institutions with full-process foreign-language services in Beijing's foreigner guide[9], nor in its appendix of other hospitals with foreign-language service (the Haidian District section does not include it)[10].
- Official website: in October 2026 the hospital's site could not be opened from outside mainland China, apart from a few cached pages; none of the pages we could read described an international department.
- Agency pages describe an "International Medical Center" and give different phone numbers and email addresses for it — we found at least three different numbers. We could not verify any of them against an official source, so we do not publish them.
- What to do: bring a Chinese-speaking companion or a professional medical interpreter (language and interpreters), prepare a bilingual summary of your case, and plan to have Chinese reports translated afterwards (getting your records translated).
What's true, what's not, what's unverified
Search results about 301 are full of coordinator pages that contradict each other. Here is how common claims hold up against official sources.
| Claim you'll read online | Verdict | What the official sources say |
|---|---|---|
| "Foreigners and civilians can't use a military hospital." | False | The hospital's guide explains how foreigners (with a passport) and civilian patients (self-pay or Beijing insurance) register[1]. |
| "You need an S2 visa to be treated." | Partly true — depends on your passport and trip | S2 is the short-term visa for family visits and "other private affairs"[12]; some embassies run a medical S2 track that asks for a treatment acceptance letter from the Chinese hospital[14]. But ordinary-passport holders of visa-free countries can enter for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, transit or exchanges[13] — treatment is not named, so ask your embassy. |
| "You need a notarized copy of your passport." | Not found in any official source | The hospital asks for the passport itself at the staffed window[1]; the embassy S2 checklist we read asks for the original passport and a photocopy of the data page, not a notarized copy[14]. |
| "You must go through a coordinator." | False | The booking channels are public — 114, the WeChat account, kiosks and bank channels[1] — and Beijing's guide says international patients are charged the same standard as residents[8]. Paid help with language is optional. |
| "Patients queue from 5 a.m. for a number." | Outdated | Outpatient care is appointment-only, with no on-site registration except emergencies; slots open at 7:00 by phone and online[1]. The only same-day option the guide mentions is the 10th-floor VIP desk. No official source mentions a dawn queue. |
| "Booking only works in the 军卫健康 app." | Not supported | The hospital's guide lists five channels and does not mention this app[1]. We could not confirm that it is an official 301 channel at all. |
| "301 has an English-speaking International Medical Center with direct billing." | Unverified | Not on the city's foreign-language lists[9][10], and no official page we could open describes one. Ask your insurer whether it has a direct-billing agreement with 301 specifically. |
| "Foreigners pay more." | Not for standard prices | The city guide says international patients pay the same charge standard as residents[8]; VIP fees are higher for everyone[1]. |
Visas in brief
- Visa-free entry: holders of ordinary passports from countries on China's unilateral visa-free list can enter for up to 30 days — currently until December 31, 2026 — for business, tourism, family visits, transit or exchanges[13]; the current country list is in our visa guide. Treatment is not on that list — for surgery or a hospital admission, ask your embassy which visa fits.
- S2 visa: issued for short-term family visits and other private affairs[12]. Requirements vary by embassy; the Türkiye embassy's medical S2 track, for example, asks for the Chinese hospital's admission certificate or treatment acceptance letter, and allows up to two accompanying close relatives[14].
- Urgent trips: a port visa can be requested on arrival for urgent reasons, including humanitarian ones such as visiting a critically ill patient — relevant for relatives who need to come at short notice[15].
- Full detail, including the 240-hour transit rules for Beijing's airports: visa and entry.
Paying and preparing
- Beijing's guide lists cash (RMB), international credit cards, UnionPay debit cards and WeChat Pay/Alipay as payment options for international patients in the city[8]; confirm at 301's cashier which cards are accepted, and set up mobile payment before you travel (payments guide).
- Bring your passport, previous reports, imaging discs and a medication list. No published price list for treatment exists in our records — ask for a written estimate before any procedure.
- Inpatient deposits, ward rules and admission paperwork differ by medical center; ask at the admission desk of the center that admits you.
The Hainan branch in Sanya
The PLA General Hospital Hainan Hospital (解放军总医院海南医院) in Haitang Bay, Sanya, opened on June 9, 2012 as the hospital's first branch outside Beijing and took its current name in November 2018[6]. Its official site lists an outpatient enquiry desk on +86 898 3733 1234, a switchboard on +86 898 3886 6666 and inpatient enquiries on +86 898 3733 0787[6]. We have not found a published international department there either. See the Hainan Hospital directory page; Hainan has its own visa-free entry rules, covered in Hainan and Boao Lecheng and visa and entry.
Is 301 the right choice for you?
301 can make sense if a doctor has referred you to a specific 301 specialist, if you have a Chinese-speaking companion, and if you are comfortable with a busy, Chinese-language public-hospital process. If you need English from booking to discharge, Beijing hospitals with published international departments are the easier route — compare them in Beijing hospitals for foreigners and read international departments explained. Whichever you choose, plan follow-up at home before you go: medical records and follow-up.
