If you are missing a tooth and the implant quotes at home run to thousands of dollars, mainland China is one of the few places where implant prices are actively regulated by the government. Since 2023, public tertiary hospitals have worked to a national target of about ¥4,500 for the medical-service part of a routine single implant, implant systems are bought through national volume procurement at an average of around ¥900 per set, and the overall cost of a routine single implant has fallen from an average of about ¥15,000 to roughly ¥6,000–7,000 (about US$850–1,000)[2]. The catch: a standard implant needs two trips to China, usually 3–6 months apart, so it suits people who travel to China regularly — or who can plan two visits.
What a dental implant is
A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with three parts: a titanium (or titanium-alloy) screw placed in the jawbone, an abutment that connects to it, and a crown that looks and works like a natural tooth. Unlike a bridge, an implant does not grind down the neighbouring teeth; unlike a removable denture, it is fixed. The trade-off is a surgical procedure and a healing period of several months while the bone fuses with the implant (osseointegration). Treatment is staged over months everywhere in the world, not just in China[11].
Why people consider China for implants
- Regulated prices in public hospitals. In September 2022 the National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) launched a nationwide price-governance programme for dental implants covering both public and private providers[1]. Tier-3 public hospitals now work to a service-fee target of about ¥4,500 per routine single implant, covering consultation, lab tests and imaging, implant placement and crown fitting[2].
- Transparent consumable prices. Implant systems (implant + abutment + accessories) are purchased through an inter-provincial volume-procurement alliance; average winning prices fell 55% to around ¥900 per set, and in public hospitals the listed price is exactly what the patient pays for the implant system — no markup[3].
- High volumes. China places around four million implants a year, and nearly 18,000 institutions — including 14,000 private clinics — joined the national procurement[2]. Large public stomatology hospitals run dedicated implant departments with high case numbers.
- Modern digital workflow. Big-city providers routinely use CBCT 3D imaging, intraoral scanning and computer-guided surgery, and major international implant brands are available through the procurement platform[4].
The honest counterweight: you will need at least two visits, follow-up and any complication management happen far from home after you leave, and the famous low prices apply to routine cases in public hospitals — complex cases and private clinics cost more. Weigh both sides before booking; our guide to safety and quality standards covers how Chinese hospitals are graded and regulated.
How implant treatment is done in China
Materials and brands
The national procurement covers four-grade pure-titanium and titanium-alloy implant systems. Premium European systems (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Dentsply) fell from a median purchase price of about ¥5,000 to around ¥1,850 per set, while the high-volume Korean systems Osstem and Dentium fell from about ¥1,500 to around ¥770[4]. Chinese domestic brands are also listed. Crowns for single-tooth implants are sold as a product at listed platform prices — all-ceramic implant crowns averaged ¥327 at the first listing in 2023[2]. You can usually choose the implant brand; the brand changes the consumable price, not the capped service fee.
Digital workflow
Expect a CBCT (3D cone-beam) scan at the first consultation, digital planning of the implant position, and often a printed or milled surgical guide. Many clinics take digital impressions with an intraoral scanner rather than trays of putty. Ask whether your case will use a surgical guide and whether the final crown is made in-house or by an external lab — it affects how many days you need to stay.
Public stomatology hospitals vs private chains
| Public stomatology hospitals | Private dental chains | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Government-guided service fees; zero-markup consumables[2] | Self-set prices; often promotional packages |
| Strengths | Complex cases, bone grafting, academic implant departments | Convenience, evening/weekend hours, English-speaking front desks more common |
| Queues | Busy; appointments via WeChat/app, often in Chinese | Easier same-week booking |
| Typical cost | Lowest for routine cases | Varies; entry-level promotions to premium pricing |
Private institutions price independently, but the NHSA publishes a list of providers — public and private — that have committed to the implant price-governance programme, which you can use as a screening signal[5]. Many large public hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other major cities run international or VIP clinics where service costs more but interpretation and scheduling are easier; see international departments explained.
Process, number of visits and days in China
A routine single implant for a healthy patient typically looks like this:
- Trip 1 (3–7 days). Consultation, CBCT scan, blood tests, treatment plan and written quote. If the site is ready, the implant is placed a day or two later under local anaesthesia (about 30–60 minutes per implant). Sutures, if any, come out after 7–10 days — some travellers stay for suture removal, others have dissolving sutures or see a dentist at home.
- Healing at home (3–6 months). The implant integrates with the bone. You wear nothing, a temporary tooth, or a temporary denture depending on the site.
- Trip 2 (3–7 days). The implant is uncovered if needed, the abutment is connected, impressions or scans are taken, and the final crown is fitted. With an in-house lab this fits comfortably in a week; confirm lab turnaround before booking flights.
Variations to discuss with the dentist — not to assume:
- Immediate placement/loading (implant and temporary crown in one visit) is possible only with good bone and a favourable bite; it can reduce the trip count to one plus a shorter return visit.
- Bone grafting or sinus lift adds cost, healing time and often a third visit. Grafting fees and materials are not included in the ¥4,500 service-fee target[1].
- Full-arch work (multiple implants, All-on-X) is a bigger surgical and financial decision; take your time over provider choice and get written treatment plans from more than one clinic before committing.
What it costs (and what the caps do and don't cover)
The NHSA programme splits the bill into three transparent parts[2]:
| Component | Policy | Typical level (routine case, public hospital) |
|---|---|---|
| Medical service (consult, imaging, placement, crown fitting) | Target ≈ ¥4,500 in tier-3 public hospitals; up to 20% higher allowed in high-cost cities and national key specialty centres[1] | ≈ ¥4,500 |
| Implant system (implant + abutment + accessories) | Volume procurement, zero markup | ≈ ¥548–1,855 per set, avg ≈ ¥900[3] |
| Crown (single-tooth implant, all-ceramic) | Listed product price ("one price") | avg ≈ ¥327 at 2023 listing[2] |
Routine totals therefore land around ¥6,000–7,000 per tooth, versus an average of about ¥15,000 before the reform[2]. Not included: tooth extraction, periodontal cleaning, root-canal work, bone grafting or soft-tissue grafts[1] — budget separately if you need them. A second round of implant-system procurement started in autumn 2026 and is expected to conclude by year-end, so consumable prices may shift again; treat all figures as "as of October 2026"[6].
For comparison, typical single-implant totals abroad: US$3,000–4,500 in the United States[7]; private treatment from £2,400 in the UK, where NHS-funded implants are rare[8]; €1,000–2,500 in Spain[9]; and around ₽70,000 on average in Moscow[10]. Even after flights and hotels, two trips to China can cost less than one implant at home for travellers from North America or Western Europe — run your own numbers with our cost comparison guide.
Payment is typically direct (card, Alipay/WeChat Pay, sometimes cash); get an itemized quote before surgery and itemized receipts (fapiao) after — see payments in China.
Two price tiers: ordinary vs international/private. The prices above are ordinary-tier (non-VIP) public-hospital prices. In a public hospital's ordinary departments (普通门诊), basic services are billed at government-guided item prices that apply to every patient, foreigners included; 特需 (VIP) and international-department services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at a share of its services[12]. Public hospitals sell bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at their purchase price, with no markup[13]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital's published schedule lists a chief-physician consultation in its international department at ¥500, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[14]. You do not have to use the international department: with a passport you can register at the ordinary clinic and pay yourself (mainland insurance does not apply) — see your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The international department or a private hospital costs more but usually adds English-speaking staff, appointments and, often, direct billing with commercial insurers. Whichever route you choose, ask for a written quote.
Travel fit and recovery
Implant surgery under local anaesthesia is day surgery: you walk out the same day. Plan 2–3 quiet days afterwards — soft food, no alcohol, no smoking, no strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. Swelling and mild bruising are normal; most people fly comfortably within a few days, but confirm with your surgeon, especially after sinus lifts. Between appointments you can sightsee gently; see recovery-friendly activities and combining treatment with travel.
Because the treatment spans two trips, check visa options for both entries in advance — visa and entry rules change frequently. Cities with large stomatology hospitals and good flight connections (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an) are practical bases; browse cities for ideas.
Choosing a provider — and what to ask
Use the directory to shortlist hospitals with implant services and international support: hospitals offering dental implants. General selection logic is in choosing a hospital. Questions worth asking in writing (our bilingual inquiry letter tool drafts them in English and Chinese):
- Which implant system and components will you use, and what is the all-in written price for my case?
- Is my case routine, or will I need grafting, a sinus lift or extractions first?
- How many trips will I need, how many days each, and what happens at each visit?
- Who places the implant (implant-department specialist, oral surgeon) and how are complications handled?
- Can I have my CBCT images, treatment plan and implant passport (brand, model, lot number) in English?
- What temporary tooth options do I have while healing at home?
- What warranty applies to the implant and crown, and is it honoured if a dentist abroad does the follow-up?
Risks, limits and follow-up at home
Implants have risks everywhere: infection, nerve injury, sinus problems, early implant failure, and later peri-implantitis (gum and bone inflammation around the implant). Travelling adds a specific one: the surgeon who knows your case is far away. Reduce that risk by taking complete records home and lining up a local dentist willing to do check-ups and cleanings around the implant — see medical records and follow-up and risks and complications.
Think twice about travelling for implants if you have uncontrolled diabetes, are a heavy smoker, have untreated gum disease, take bone-affecting medication (e.g. bisphosphonates), or need extensive grafting — these raise failure risk and may need closer supervision than a two-trip schedule allows. None of this is individual medical advice: a dentist must assess your mouth, ideally with a recent panoramic X-ray or CBCT you can share before you fly.

よくある質問
Can I get a dental implant in one trip to China?
Usually not. The standard protocol needs two trips 3–6 months apart: one to place the implant, one to fit the final crown after the bone has healed. Immediate loading in a single trip is possible only when bone quality and bite allow it — your dentist decides after a CBCT scan.
How much does a single dental implant cost in China?
After the national price governance that took effect in 2023, a routine single implant averages about ¥6,000–7,000 all-in at public hospitals — roughly US$850–1,000. Premium implant brands, bone grafting, extractions and private-clinic pricing push the total higher.
Which implant brands are available in China?
Major international systems — Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Dentsply, Osstem, Dentium and others — were included in the national volume procurement, alongside Chinese brands. Ask which exact system and components will be used and get it in writing.
Is it painful, and how long is recovery?
Placement is done under local anaesthesia and most patients describe soreness for a few days, managed with ordinary painkillers. Plan quiet days and soft food immediately after surgery; most travellers can fly home within a few days — confirm timing with your surgeon.
What if something goes wrong after I fly home?
Minor issues (loose healing cap, mild inflammation) can often be handled by a local dentist if they know the implant system used. Ask your Chinese clinic for the implant brand, model and lot number, your CBCT images and an English treatment summary before leaving.
Do Chinese hospitals accept foreign dental insurance?
Public hospitals generally expect direct payment (cash, card or mobile payment) and issue itemized receipts (fapiao) you can submit to your insurer. Some private clinics bill international insurers directly — confirm before booking.
