A root canal saves a tooth whose inner pulp is infected or inflamed: the dentist removes the infected tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, then fills and seals them[1]. In China this is routine work at public stomatology hospitals and private dental clinics, and since 2025 the fees public hospitals can charge have been standardized nationally into per-canal price items[2]. Most cases need one to three visits over one to two weeks, which fits inside a single trip — as long as you leave room in your itinerary for the "what ifs": an extra disinfection visit, a flare-up, or a crown.

Who this is for

Root canal treatment may be recommended when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected through decay, gum disease, a crack or an abscess; without treatment, the tooth may eventually need to be extracted[1]. Travellers who consider having it done in China usually fall into one of these groups:

  • You developed tooth pain shortly before or during a planned trip to China and want it treated properly rather than patched.
  • You already live in or regularly visit China (for work, study or family) and want to use a stay for dental work.
  • You are planning a larger dental trip — for example implants or crowns — and a root canal turns out to be a necessary first step.

Who should probably not travel specifically for a root canal: anyone with an acute, spreading infection (treat it where you are — dental infections should not wait for a visa and a flight), and anyone who cannot stay long enough for at least two appointments plus a buffer day or two.

How the treatment works

The clinical steps are the same as anywhere in the world. Under local anesthetic, the dentist opens the tooth, removes the infected pulp (draining an abscess if present), cleans and shapes the canal system, and finally fills and seals it; a temporary filling often protects the tooth between appointments, and appointments may last one to two hours[1].

China's national price-item framework makes the billing logic unusually transparent: the work is billed per root canal, in separate items for canal preparation, irrigation/medication and filling (obturation), with defined add-ons for anatomically difficult canals and a separate item for retreating a previously treated canal[2][3]. Front teeth typically have one canal; molars typically have three or more — which is why a molar root canal costs roughly three times as much as an incisor.

Two quality markers worth asking about, both of which appear as explicit items in Chinese public fee schedules, are rubber dam isolation (keeping the tooth dry and protected during treatment) and, where the tooth is badly broken down, a post-and-core build-up before the final restoration[3].

How many visits, and how long to stay

  • Straightforward cases: often completed in 1–2 visits. UK guidance describes root canal treatment as usually taking two or more appointments[1].
  • Infected or complex cases: commonly 2–3 visits, with medication sealed inside the canals between appointments.
  • Retreatment of an old root canal: plan for more visits and more chair time; it is formally a separate, costlier procedure[3].
  • If a crown is needed: a crown may be recommended when the tooth was badly infected or heavily broken down[1]. Expect additional appointments for preparation and fitting, plus laboratory time — ask the clinic how many days they need.

A realistic stay for a simple case is about 4–7 days; for a multi-visit case or root canal plus crown, 10–14 days is safer. Example (labelled as an example, not a promise): arrive Monday, consultation and X-ray Tuesday, first treatment visit Wednesday, second visit the following Monday, final check Tuesday, fly out Wednesday.

What it costs in China

As of October 2026, dental fees at Chinese public hospitals follow a national framework of standardized price items; each province sets its own maximum prices under it[2]. Beijing's schedule — maximum guide prices for public and non-profit medical institutions, effective 27 June 2026 — is a useful public benchmark[3][4]:

Item (per root canal unless noted) Beijing cap (CNY)
Canal preparation (根管预备费) 180
Canal irrigation, incl. medication (根管冲洗费) 20
Canal filling / obturation (根管充填费) 150
Add-on for anatomically difficult canals +90 preparation, +75 filling
Retreatment of a previously treated canal (根管再治疗费) 200
Rubber dam isolation (per session) 50
Post-and-core build-up (per canal) 1,000
Crown / fixed restoration (per tooth position) 4,000

Worked example under these caps: a single-canal front tooth comes to about CNY 350 in core canal fees (180 + 20 + 150), and a three-canal molar to about CNY 1,050 — before consultation and imaging fees, the permanent filling (capped at CNY 250 per tooth in Beijing) or a crown, and before any difficult-canal add-ons[3]. Hospitals may charge less than the caps but not more, and they are required to display their prices[4].

Important caveats:

  • These caps bind public and non-profit institutions in Beijing; other provinces publish their own levels, which differ[2][4].
  • Private clinics set their own market prices, often higher, sometimes bundled per tooth. Always ask for a written per-item quote.
  • International or VIP departments of public hospitals may apply different (premium) pricing — ask before booking.
  • You will pay out of pocket: China's public insurance does not cover foreign visitors, so check whether your own travel or health insurance reimburses dental treatment abroad.

Two price tiers: ordinary vs international/private. The prices above are ordinary-tier (non-VIP) public-hospital prices. In a public hospital's ordinary departments (普通门诊), basic services are billed at government-guided item prices that apply to every patient, foreigners included; 特需 (VIP) and international-department services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at a share of its services[6]. Public hospitals sell bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at their purchase price, with no markup[7]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital's published schedule lists a chief-physician consultation in its international department at ¥500, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[8]. You do not have to use the international department: with a passport you can register at the ordinary clinic and pay yourself (mainland insurance does not apply) — see your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The international department or a private hospital costs more but usually adds English-speaking staff, appointments and, often, direct billing with commercial insurers. Whichever route you choose, ask for a written quote.

How prices compare abroad

In England, NHS root canal treatment falls under the Band 2 charge of £76.60 for NHS patients, while crowns fall under Band 3 at £332.10[5] — but NHS access can involve waits, and private endodontic fees in the UK and elsewhere are substantially higher and vary by provider. For most people, a root canal alone does not justify a flight to China; it becomes economically interesting mainly when you are already travelling there, live there part-time, or are combining it with other dental work in one stay. See our cost comparison guide for how to compare like with like.

Fitting it into a trip

Root canal treatment is one of the more travel-compatible dental procedures: visits are outpatient, recovery is quick, and soreness normally settles within days to a couple of weeks[1]. Practical tips:

  • Book the first appointment early in your stay, not the last days — this preserves room for an extra visit.
  • Avoid scheduling long-distance travel or important events within 24 hours of each appointment; anesthetic numbness lasts several hours[1].
  • If a crown is recommended, decide whether to have it in China (more days, lab timing) or at home — and get the tooth's records either way: see medical records and follow-up.
  • Mild post-treatment discomfort can be managed with ordinary painkillers[1]; severe or worsening pain, swelling or fever needs prompt review — know where you would go, see emergencies in China.

Choosing a provider

China has dedicated public stomatology hospitals (口腔医院), dental departments in general hospitals, and a large private sector. When comparing, ask:

  • Does the endodontic department use rubber dam isolation routinely, and is a dental microscope available for complex canals?
  • Will the same dentist handle all visits, and can all visits be scheduled within your stay — in writing?
  • Is there an English-speaking dentist or interpreter? Public hospitals' international departments are often the simplest route for foreign patients.
  • What exactly is in the quote: imaging, each canal item, the final restoration, re-visits?

Quick checklist before you book

Ask these in writing — the answers tell you more than any advertisement:

  1. Which tooth, how many canals, and is this a first treatment or a retreatment?
  2. How many visits will my case need, and can you schedule all of them between my arrival and departure dates?
  3. Do you use rubber dam isolation and, for complex canals, a microscope?
  4. What is the per-item quote, including imaging, anesthesia, the final restoration and any re-visit fees?
  5. Who do I contact — and how — if pain or swelling starts after I leave China?
  6. What records will I receive (X-rays, treatment notes, materials used), and in what language?

On paying: hospital international departments usually accept bank cards, but daily life in China runs on mobile payment apps — set them up before you travel: see payments with Alipay and WeChat.

Risks and limits

Be realistic about the downsides before booking flights:

  • No treatment is guaranteed. A root-canal-treated tooth can flare up or fail months or years later, and retreatment or surgery may then be needed[3]. If that happens after you fly home, your home dentist — not the treating clinic — will manage it, at local prices.
  • Timelines can slip. An infected tooth may need an extra medication visit before it can be filled; build buffer days into your itinerary.
  • Continuity of care matters. Take home the X-rays (before and after), a written description of which tooth and canals were treated and with what materials, and the clinic's contact details — see risks and complications.
  • Language and consent. Make sure you understand the diagnosis and alternatives (filling only, extraction, implant) before agreeing; a reputable provider will explain rather than upsell.

Next steps

Domande frequenti

How many visits does a root canal take in China?

Usually one to three visits, often spread over one to two weeks. UK health-service guidance likewise describes root canal treatment as usually taking two or more appointments; complex teeth and retreatments can take longer.

How much does a root canal cost in a Chinese public hospital?

Under Beijing's government price caps effective June 2026, the core canal fees add up to about CNY 350 per canal — roughly CNY 350 for a single-canal front tooth and about CNY 1,050 for a three-canal molar, before X-rays, the final filling or a crown. Other provinces set their own caps, and private clinics set market prices.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Not always. A crown is typically recommended when the tooth was badly damaged or infected; your dentist will assess this. A crown adds visits, laboratory time and cost, so ask about it before you plan your trip.

Can I fly home right after a root canal?

Soreness for a few days is common, and flying is generally not restricted after routine root canal work, but confirm with your dentist — especially if an abscess was being drained. Keep one or two buffer days in case an extra visit is needed.

Can an old, failed root canal be redone in China?

Yes. Root canal retreatment is a standard, separately priced item in Chinese public-hospital fee schedules. It is usually more complex than first-time treatment, so plan for more visits and a longer stay.
