General Surgery
The Department of General Surgery of the Qiantang Campus of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a key specialty under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s “12th Five-Year Plan” and the Zhejiang Provincial Sub-center of the National (East China) Regional Alliance for Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery. The Wound and Vascular Surgery Subspecialty of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the Zhejiang Provincial Sub-center of the National (East China) Regional Alliance for Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery. In the field of peripheral vascular disease, our department is the Training Base for Minimally Invasive Treatment of Varicose Veins of the Chinese Society for Microcirculation and the Hangzhou Branch of the Varicose Veins Training Academy of the China Bethune Public Welfare Foundation. In the field of diabetic foot and wound repair, our department is the Zhejiang Provincial Sub-center of the Yangtze River Delta Vascular Disease Alliance and a joint-development partner for the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot in Zhejiang Province. In the field of snakebite diagnosis and treatment, our department is the Zhejiang Provincial Research Center for Snakebite Diagnosis and Treatment, China, and a designated unit for the treatment of venomous snakebites in Zhejiang Province. Our department has become an important base in Zhejiang Province for clinical practice, research, and teaching in the integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular diseases.
Technical Advantages
The department routinely performs complex procedures such as radical resection of high hilar cholangiocarcinoma, radical resection of gallbladder cancer, pancreaticoduodenectomy, and resection of giant liver cancer. Minimally invasive surgery has also advanced by leaps and bounds. Our department has successively and successfully performed laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer, endoscopic spleen-preserving resection of the pancreatic body and tail, laparoscopic repair of splenic injuries, laparoscopic splenectomy for massive splenomegaly + pericardial devascularization, laparoscopic resection of liver cancer, and laparoscopic appendectomy. The thyroid surgery service widely performs open thyroid lobectomy and functional neck dissection for thyroid cancer. Laparoscopic hernia repair is also a major highlight of our department. This procedure involves minimal trauma, mild postoperative pain, and rapid recovery. Single-port minimally invasive surgery for pediatric hernias involves minimal trauma. The Emergency Trauma Center performs a large number of emergency surgeries each year and has extensive experience in rescuing critically ill surgical patients. It has particularly high-level expertise in minimally invasive treatment of abdominal visceral injuries, minimally invasive spleen-preserving surgery for splenic trauma, partial splenectomy, and other procedures. The vascular surgery subspecialty routinely performs angioplasty for arterial occlusive disease, aspiration thrombectomy and thrombolysis for lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis, minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular surgical diseases such as great saphenous vein varicosities, and treatment of diabetic foot and chronic refractory wounds. To promote exchange and interaction among peers at home and abroad, the “Qiantang Peripheral Vascular Disease Forum,” founded in 2019, has become an important academic event and exchange platform in China’s wound and vascular surgery field. More than 60,000 followers from China and abroad participated in online and offline exchanges at the inaugural forum. In 2024, it successfully hosted the 7th China Microcirculation Varicose Veins Conference.
The diabetic foot and wound repair MDT program led by Director Wang Yonggao of our department has now been held for 30 consecutive editions. The program has consistently upheld the academic principle of being “case-based, problem-oriented, and guideline-driven.” The integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot and wound repair has received support for discipline development under the hospital’s High-Quality Development Boosting Plan.
In the area of snakebite treatment, the Healthy China Tour public education campaign on snakebite treatment of the Emergency Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the “Zero Snakebite Deaths in Zhejiang Province” action program, both led by our department, are being vigorously carried out throughout the province. Our department has organized teams of snakebite experts from Zhejiang Province to go to grassroots areas, conduct more than 30 sessions promoting standardized snakebite treatment, and hold consultations and discussions on more than 2,000 difficult cases. Through the efforts of medical personnel throughout the province, the snakebite mortality rate has remained at zero for five consecutive years.
