Reproductive Medicine Centre
Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology
The Reproductive Medicine and Genetics Center of Tongji Hospital was founded in 1998 and has flourished under generations of discipline leaders such as Professors Luo Lilan, Zhu Guijin, Zhang Hanwang and Jin Lei; in 2024 it ranked seventh nationwide in reproductive medicine in the Fudan ranking. The current discipline leader, Professor Li Kezhen, focuses her research on oncofertility. She has won one national teaching achievement award, one First Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, one First Prize (Clinical Medicine Innovation) of the Medical Science and Technology Award of the Research Hospital Association, and two Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress Awards; she has completed more than 10 national and provincial research projects, with research funding under her charge exceeding 10 million yuan. Over the past five years she has published more than fifty SCI papers as first or corresponding author in leading international journals such as Lancet Oncology, Nature Genetics and Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy. She served as editor of the People's Medical Publishing House five-year-program textbook "Obstetrics and Gynecology" (4th edition) and the long-program textbook "Obstetrics and Gynecology" (10th edition), and as chief or associate editor of professional books such as the higher-education "Obstetrics and Gynecology", "Fertility Preservation in Gynecologic Malignancies" and "Gynecology", and enjoys considerable influence in the national field of obstetrics and gynecology.
As the former Ministry of Health's Human Assisted Reproductive Technology training base (one of only 10 nationwide), a training base for fertility preservation technical standards of the China Maternal and Child Health Association, a council member of the China Fertility Preservation Alliance, a national TCM-Western medicine collaborative "flagship" department, the Hubei Provincial Quality Management and Control Center for Human Assisted Reproductive Technology, and the Wuhan Clinical Medical Research Center for Reproductive Health and Assisted Reproductive Technology, the Center has not only trained large numbers of high-level reproductive medicine specialists for society, but also provides high-precision, cutting-edge services each year to large numbers of patients with reproductive difficulties from Hubei and beyond, fulfilling the motherhood dream of hundreds of thousands of infertile patients. The discipline currently has more than 50 physicians and more than 30 technical staff, including 12 physicians with full senior titles and more than 20 with associate senior titles — a professionally superb and highly capable team.
The Reproductive Medicine and Genetics Center is located in Building 9 of Tongji Hospital, covering 13 floors of outpatient and inpatient units, including specialty, expert and MDT clinics as well as independent laboratories, ultrasound rooms, culture rooms and operating rooms. The outpatient clinic mainly offers ovulation induction, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization–embryo transfer (IVF-ET), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) and other services, and is particularly distinctive in PGT — "third-generation IVF" — and in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult conditions such as repeated implantation failure, recurrent miscarriage and unexplained infertility. The ward is a distinctive feature of the Center and is one of the few reproductive surgery units in China reaching internationally leading levels. It specializes in fertility-preserving surgery for young women with benign or malignant diseases who wish to have children — such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, intrauterine adhesions, fallopian tube obstruction and ovarian cysts — treated with minimally invasive techniques, requiring not only that the organ be preserved but also that its function be maintained; it also offers fertility-sparing treatment for malignancies such as endometrial cancer and cervical cancer, striving for "cured and able to conceive", and enjoys a high reputation in the specialty.
Over the past decade the discipline has developed rapidly, producing expert teams with exceptional skills, such as the teams of Professor Jin Lei and Professor Qian Kun for repeated implantation failure; Professor Yue Jing's and Professor Yang Wei's teams for recurrent miscarriage; Professor Li Yufeng's and Professor Li Zhou's teams for unexplained infertility; Professor Ai Jihui's and Professor Xu Bei's teams for infertility related to polycystic ovary syndrome; Professor Gu Longjie's team for male infertility; Professor Zhao Yiqing's team for fallopian tube obstruction and adenomyoma; and Professor Li Qiang's and Professor Xiong Ting's teams for uterine fibroids and intrauterine adhesions. A series of specialty clinics have been opened, including a fertility preservation clinic, an oncofertility clinic, an embryo clinic, a genetic counseling clinic and a traditional Chinese medicine clinic, as well as an MDT clinic to meet the needs of patients with multiple comorbidities. The training and mentoring of these team specialists bring convenience to patients: a patient who reaches any member of a team can complete treatment of simple conditions and have complex conditions escalated step by step, even to full department discussions of difficult cases, which also provides technical support for improving patients' pregnancy rates. The more than 200 staff of the Reproductive Medicine and Genetics Center look forward to bringing infertile patients a more comfortable environment, more convenient procedures, a better service experience and a more superb technical platform — and wish all patients continuous good luck in achieving pregnancy!
