II. Specialized Services and Medical Programs
(1) Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Treatment of Emergency and Critical Illnesses Across Multiple Fields
For emergency and critical illnesses such as cardiac arrest, acute severe trauma, sepsis, various types of shock, and multiple-organ failure, the Center uses an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine approach for treatment. In the treatment of cardiac arrest, it has developed specialized techniques such as high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, thrombolytic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). The percutaneous puncture method for ECPR was the first of its kind in China and has been patented, reaching an advanced domestic level in related fields. For patients with acute poisoning, integrated Chinese and Western treatment methods are used to rapidly eliminate toxins, reduce bodily damage, and improve the success rate of treatment.
(2) Refined Diagnosis and Treatment by Subspecialty
Subspecialties such as cardiac arrest, acute severe trauma, and sepsis have been established. Each subspecialty is equipped with a professional medical team focusing on the research and treatment of specific diseases and providing patients with more precise and individualized diagnosis and treatment plans.
The ICU of Xianlin Campus (Department of Psychiatric and Geriatric Critical Care Medicine) provides specialized integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment services for critically ill psychiatric and elderly patients, covering difficult and critical emergency conditions in psychiatry and geriatrics, multiple-organ dysfunction or failure, and other diseases. It also emphasizes TCM rehabilitation treatment, highlighting the distinctive feature of “critical care rehabilitation.” Zhijiang ICU focuses on patients with chronic critical illness and rehabilitation-related critical illness, with critical care rehabilitation as its subspecialty feature.
(3) Comprehensive Life-Support Technologies
The ICUs of all campuses are equipped with advanced life-support technologies, such as minimally invasive percutaneous dilational tracheostomy, modified bronchoalveolar lavage, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), bedside temporary cardiac pacemaker placement, intra-aortic balloon pump therapy (IABP), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support therapy (ECMO).
Mechanical ventilation, cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation, emergency bedside temporary cardiac pacing, ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis and drainage of pericardial effusion, mild hypothermia, pulmonary lavage, continuous blood purification (CRRT), percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT), and other treatment-support technologies are routinely provided, offering strong protection for the continuation of life in critically ill patients.
(4) Specialized TCM Adjuvant Treatment
As the lead institution of the collaboration group for “Sepsis-Associated Acute Gastrointestinal Dysfunction” of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Center addresses the difficult problem of gastrointestinal failure through pattern differentiation and treatment. By using TCM methods such as tonifying qi and strengthening the spleen, and unblocking the bowels and purging downward, it has established a unique integrated Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment plan with significant efficacy, reaching a leading level within the province. In treating gastrointestinal failure, respiratory failure, and other diseases in critically ill patients, it gives full play to the advantages of TCM adjuvant treatment and has achieved good clinical efficacy and academic research results.
III. Specialized Advanced Medical Equipment
The campuses of the Center are equipped with a series of advanced medical devices. For example, the Emergency Department of Cuiyuan Campus has an advanced helipad for air-rescue helicopters, as well as emergency examination and testing equipment including CT, DSA, X-ray, and B-mode ultrasound that is available 24 hours a day. The ICUs of all campuses are equipped with central monitoring systems, invasive and noninvasive ventilators, portable ventilators, video laryngoscopes, chest physical-therapy devices, warming and cooling blanket therapy devices, high-end bedside ultrasound machines, bedside fiberoptic bronchoscopes, Gambro Prisma Flex blood-purification machines, and other equipment, providing a solid hardware foundation for precise diagnosis and effective treatment.
IV. Achievements in Department Development
(1) Abundant Scientific Research Achievements
The departments of all campuses actively conduct scientific research and lead or participate in numerous national- and provincial-/ministerial-level research projects. They have achieved a series of important research results in the treatment of emergency and critical illnesses, some of which have won provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards and Medical and Health Science and Technology Awards. For example, research achievements in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and TCM treatment of gastrointestinal failure have provided strong theoretical support and technical guidance for clinical practice.
(2) Significant Academic Standing
The medical and nursing staff of the Center have considerable academic influence in the field of emergency and critical care medicine in China. Many serve in important positions on national- and provincial-level professional academic committees, actively participate in the formulation of industry standards and academic exchange activities, and promote the development of emergency and critical care medicine. At the same time, they have published a large number of high-quality academic papers in core journals, some of which have been indexed by SCI, demonstrating the Center’s strength in academic research. 400 papers have been published in core journals, and 100 have been indexed by SCI.
V. Center Personnel Structure
The departments across the Center’s campuses include 8 physicians with senior professional titles, 10 with associate-senior professional titles, and 70 physicians with master’s or doctoral degrees. They have profound expertise in critical care techniques and play an important role in the comprehensive treatment of critically ill patients. Through improved information-sharing mechanisms and multidisciplinary collaboration models, the campuses achieve seamless integration of prehospital emergency care, in-hospital emergency care, and critical care when facing various major emergency and critical illnesses, jointly safeguarding patients’ lives and health.
VI. Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment
Covering multiple disciplines from prehospital emergency care to in-hospital emergency care, critical care treatment, and full-course rehabilitation, the Center treats common and complex emergency and critical illnesses including cardiac arrest, acute severe trauma, sepsis, various types of shock, multiple-organ failure, acute poisoning, severe infection, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, acute myocardial infarction, severe cardiac failure, various malignant arrhythmias, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents, psychiatric diseases, geriatric diseases, chronic wound repair, and more.
