Clinical Features of the Department
The most prominent achievement of the Shuguang Gynecology Department has been its emphasis on research into clinical applications. Since the 1960s, Professor Pang Panchi took the lead in conducting clinical research and research on formulas and medicines for treating ectopic pregnancy with traditional Chinese medicine; there was not a single treatment failure, breaking through the traditional surgical-treatment approach that had been followed in China and abroad for many years; from the 1970s onward, he devoted himself to research on the treatment of gynecologic malignant tumors with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, with particularly significant clinical efficacy in cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, hydatidiform mole, and other conditions. Since the 1980s, he guided graduate students in clinical and experimental research on infertility and gynecologic tumors, publishing more than 20 papers and one monograph in total. He developed self-prepared formulations with definite efficacy, including Myoma No. 1 Tablets, Myoma No. 2 Tablets, Heat-Clearing Tumor-Resolving Decoction, Qi-Supplementing Yin-Nourishing Decoction, Immunity-Enhancing Tumor-Inhibiting Granules, Anti-Inflammatory Decoction, and Blood-Nourishing Menorrhagia-Stopping Decoction, which received favorable reviews from numerous patients. Professor Dai Deying built on the past and paved the way for the future, inheriting and developing the fine traditions of gynecology; in particular, he conducted clinical and experimental research on endometriosis, termination of early pregnancy, post-abortion uterine bleeding, and vaginitis. The self-prepared formulations he developed, including the Membrane-Expelling Decoction, Hongteng Mixture, and Vaginal-Washing Formula, generated significant social and economic benefits, and he published more than 10 related papers and once won the Third Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. From the late 1990s through the past nearly 5 years, Professors Sun Zhuojun and Qi Cong further improved discipline development, implementing single-disease medical quality management for a number of common diseases with definite efficacy, such as: threatened abortion, hyperemesis gravidarum, pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal obstructive infertility, and anovulatory dysfunctional uterine bleeding; they formulated unified diagnostic and treatment protocols, establishing diagnostic bases, syndrome classifications, treatment methods, and efficacy evaluation standards, and standardizing medication. They used oral traditional Chinese medicines, retention enemas, traditional Chinese medicine iontophoresis, uterine and fallopian tube hydrotubation, hysteroscopic catheter hydrotubation, etc., and continuously summarized experience and improved efficacy in practice. Gynecological clinical work has consistently proposed research topics based on TCM characteristics and conducted clinical efficacy studies of uterine fibroids, gynecologic tumors, endometriosis, infertility, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, perimenopausal syndrome, dysmenorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc. It has become a Grade A department specializing in specific diseases and specialties at Shuguang Hospital. There are currently 10 projects under research, including 1 national-level project and 5 provincial/ministerial-level projects; research funding has reached 1.2 million (excluding matching funds). In the past nearly 5 years, more than 50 papers have been published in total, including 2 international-level, 25 national-level, and 28 local-level papers.
Departmental Business Development
At present, the Shuguang Gynecology Department has a total of 34 beds across the East and West hospitals; in ’07, it treated approximately 1,800 patient encounters, including approximately 300 encounters involving specialized TCM treatments (threatened abortion, pelvic inflammatory disease, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, etc.); there were approximately 1,500 surgical patient encounters, and annual outpatient volume was approximately 80,000 visits. New technologies and projects include hysteroscopic diagnosis and treatment for dysfunctional uterine bleeding, endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, and endometrial cancer, as well as direct-vision catheterization and hydrotubation of the uterus and fallopian tubes. Colposcopy technology has been introduced, which is of great value for the early diagnosis of cervical lesions, especially cervical cancer and precancerous lesions. Laparoscopic technology has been performed for more than 4 years, including laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, subserosal uterine fibroid enucleation, ectopic pregnancy surgery, lysis of tubal adhesions, and intrafascial hysterectomy. At present, the overall clinical and research strength of Shuguang Gynecology holds a leading position in the field of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai. In terms of the talent structure, the department currently has 14 physicians, including 8 with associate senior titles or above (60%), of whom 3 hold doctoral degrees and 6 hold master's degrees; 70% have master's- or doctoral-level education, there is 1 in-service doctoral student, and 1 apprentice is being trained by a renowned veteran TCM physician. There are 2 doctoral supervisors, the average age is 40.2 years, and the age structure is reasonable. The department is currently supervising 7 doctoral students and more than 10 master's students. The Department of Gynecology Teaching and Research undertakes teaching for the 7-year program at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has trained 4 doctoral students and 10 master's students. It is responsible for compiling nationally standardized textbooks such as ‘The Tenth Five-Year Plan’ and ‘Facing the 21st Century’ (associate editor-in-chief); it serves as associate editor-in-chief of the monograph Modern Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Gynecological Diseases; and it serves as editor-in-chief of the multimedia textbook TCM Gynecology. It has been recognized as a university-level high-quality course in TCM Gynecology and as a construction unit for the TCM Gynecology subproject of the Education Highland.
Historical Development of the Department
Over the past 40 years, the Department of Gynecology of Shuguang Hospital has achieved brilliant results through the tireless efforts of renowned experts and professors such as Pang Panchi and Dai Deying. It was one of the earliest approved doctoral programs in traditional Chinese medicine gynecology in China and enjoys a high level of recognition in society and nationwide. Particularly over the past 20 years, whether in teaching basic theory, clinical practice, or experimental research using modern scientific and technological methods, it has both reflected the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine and embodied the standards of the times, achieving significant development.
