Surgery Department 2
Surgery Department 2 began in 1988 as an extracorporeal lithotripsy center and became an independent department in 2008. It is a Guangdong key traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) specialty and a Shenzhen specialty with TCM characteristics. Professors Deng Yongyu, Chen Xin and Lin Feng previously served as administrative directors; Professor Liu Shangwen has led the department since 2016. The department focuses on standardized, minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of urinary stones, prostate disease, urinary tumors and urinary control disorders, combining Chinese and Western medicine. It has two wards, 30 beds and 22 medical and nursing staff, including one Shenzhen renowned TCM practitioner, one outstanding TCM practitioner and one master's supervisor. It reports over 10,000 outpatient visits and over 1,000 discharges annually. The hospital describes its approach as primarily TCM with Western medicine in support, combining individualized TCM pattern-based treatment and perioperative care with modern minimally invasive surgery. It uses a TCM-enhanced recovery approach, including oral herbal medicines, acupoint applications, acupuncture and physical therapy, auricular seed pressure and herbal washes. The hospital reports reduced postoperative pain and complications and faster gastrointestinal recovery. Equipment includes an Olympus flexible electronic ureteroscope, high-definition laparoscopic system and high-power holmium laser lithotripter. Procedures include flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy, which the hospital describes as noninvasive, transurethral prostate enucleation, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy. It reports over 1,000 operations annually, more than 50% classified as grade III or IV, and over 25% of patients coming from outside the region. The department also undertakes clinical teaching, research and standardized training, holding academic exchanges, multidisciplinary consultations and difficult-case discussions. It aims to develop a regional TCM urology center and provide continuous, patient-centered care.
