Integrated Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment Ward
The Comprehensive Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment Integrated Ward (COC) of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital is one of the first pilot units under the “Municipal Hospital Comprehensive Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment Center (COC) Project” of the Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, and is also the only pilot unit in Shanghai for the lung cancer disease category. The department was upgraded and reorganized in June 2025 and is committed to developing a new patient-centered model of comprehensive lung cancer diagnosis and treatment covering the entire continuum of “prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up.” This is an important milestone in the hospital’s specialized lung cancer management and also provides a model for the transformation and upgrading of comprehensive oncology diagnosis and treatment models.
The department has 61 beds in actual operation and offers expert services, VIP/special medical services, comprehensive oncology diagnosis and treatment, and immunotherapy subspecialty services, as well as an international outpatient clinic. Its scope of diagnosis and treatment includes: early screening and diagnosis of lung cancer; precision treatment of advanced lung cancer; perioperative antitumor treatment for patients with lung cancer; comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors of the mediastinum and pleura; and the research and development of new antitumor treatment approaches. On the basis of routine diagnosis and treatment, the department focuses on clinical research and clinical practice involving drug-resistant tumors. The department has established a molecular testing platform encompassing multiple technologies and developed a “comprehensive, rapid, and precise” lung cancer diagnosis and treatment system. It routinely performs transairway fiberoptic bronchoscopy biopsy, CT-guided puncture biopsy, medical thoracoscopy, and other procedures. The department currently has 28 medical and nursing personnel, including 3 chief physicians and 2 professors and doctoral supervisors. All physicians hold postgraduate degrees or higher. Together, they form a professional team that is highly skilled in medicine, committed to professional ethics, pragmatic, and innovative, working collaboratively across multiple dimensions, including clinical care, scientific research, and teaching.
The greatest innovation of the COC ward lies in breaking down traditional disciplinary barriers and integrating multidisciplinary resources from medical oncology, thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and other specialties to create a truly “one-stop” intelligent diagnosis and treatment platform for patients with lung cancer. The department is equipped with a dedicated COC platform and a structured electronic medical record system to achieve information interconnection and interoperability. It has also introduced an AI+ MDT-assisted mechanism that stratifies and manages patients according to the complexity of their conditions, ensuring that every patient receives a precise, individualized diagnosis and treatment plan and achieves the greatest possible benefit.
In the future, the COC model will enter the “2.0 era.” It will focus not only on treatment efficacy and survival, but will also encompass adverse-reaction management, quality-of-life assessment, and other areas, thereby establishing a more complete real-world database. This systematic, data-driven, full-process integrated diagnosis and treatment model is gradually becoming a benchmark for innovation in global oncology management concepts.
