Medical Imaging

The Department of Medical Imaging at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology was founded in 1948 as the X-ray room of the dental service of Peking University Hospital. The hospital describes it as one of the largest oral and maxillofacial imaging departments in China and internationally. Its director is chief physician Sun Zhipeng, and its deputy director is Associate Professor Lei Jie.

Over more than half a century, the department has contributed to clinical care, teaching and research in oral and maxillofacial imaging. Professor Zou Zhaoju, a founder of oral and maxillofacial radiology in China, trained the first medical doctoral graduate in the People's Republic of China in 1984 and established the oral radiology group of the Chinese Medical Association's stomatology society in 1987. In 2000 Professor Ma Xuchen founded the Chinese Stomatological Association's oral and maxillofacial radiology committee and chaired its first two terms. In 2007, as president of the International Association of DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology, he chaired its 16th international congress in Beijing.

The department is a standardized residency training base and a master's and doctoral degree program in oral and maxillofacial imaging. It has trained over 90 master's students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers; published more than 500 academic papers, including over 150 English-language and SCI-indexed papers; and edited 21 monographs. Professor Ma Xuchen's course on oral and maxillofacial diagnostic imaging received national and Beijing excellent course recognition in 2008, and its textbook received Beijing excellent textbook recognition in 2013.

The department has 42 staff, including 15 physicians, 11 with senior titles, and 16 technicians, eight with intermediate or higher titles. Imaging and interventional radiology equipment includes nine dental X-ray units, six digital panoramic units, four oral and maxillofacial cone-beam CT units, a digital 500 mA X-ray unit, color ultrasound, multislice spiral CT, 3.0 T MRI and an endoscope. More than 370,000 imaging examinations related to oral and maxillofacial diseases were performed in 2023.
