Pain Medicine

The Department of Pain Medicine of Peking University People's Hospital was formerly the Pain Treatment Specialty Group of the Department of Anesthesiology, established in June 2007, and becoming an independent department in 2013. It is a comprehensive department integrating clinical care, research, and teaching. It has advanced clinical and research teams and internationally first-class equipment for pain diagnosis and treatment, and holds a leading position in China in the diagnosis and minimally invasive interventional treatment of chronic pain.

It currently has highly qualified experts and professionals, including professors, doctoral supervisors, chief physicians, deputy chief physicians, PhDs, and master's degree holders, as well as an excellent and experienced nursing team. Because the Department of Pain Medicine treats a wide range of diseases involving multiple specialties, we emphasized professional diversity among department members during its development, including physicians specializing in anesthesiology, orthopedics, medical oncology, neurology, traditional Chinese medicine, rehabilitation therapy, and other fields. The department has three subspecialties: bone and joint pain, neuropathic pain, and cancer pain. It includes a pain clinic, pain treatment room, pain recovery room, and pain ward. Since its establishment, our department has relieved the suffering of many patients who had long endured pain through various outpatient treatments and minimally invasive interventional procedures.

Our department is one of the first «Standardized Cancer Pain Treatment Demonstration Wards» designated by the Ministry of Health. At the same time, leveraging the advantages of our hospital's medical consortium and using modern information technology, we jointly manage patients with cancer pain at home with community hospitals.

The Department of Pain Medicine is committed to basic and clinical research on pain. It has successively undertaken or participated in numerous national- and provincial-/ministerial-level projects, including the «973» Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Capital Health Development Special Project, and has published dozens of research articles in SCI journals and domestic journals.

We will relieve patients' pain with first-class service and superb technology, always upholding the principle that «Relieving pain is a patient's basic right and also our sacred duty».
