Retroperitoneal Tumor Surgery
The Retroperitoneal Tumor Surgery Department of Peking University People's Hospital was established on January 15, 2025. The hospital describes it as the first independent clinical specialty at a Chinese public tertiary hospital devoted to the treatment and research of retroperitoneal tumors. It has outpatient clinics at Xizhimen and Tongzhou, an online clinic, a general inpatient ward and a day-surgery ward. Staff include one chief physician and professor, three associate chief physicians and associate professors, four attending physicians, three residents and 20 nurses. With 38 beds, the department performs over 1,000 retroperitoneal tumor operations annually, treating large, difficult and recurrent tumors of the retroperitoneum, pelvis and sacrococcygeal region. More than 85% of patients come from outside Beijing or overseas; the hospital says many had been declined by other hospitals, had unsuccessful operations elsewhere or experienced recurrence after multiple operations.
The hospital describes its team as a leading group, with standardized surgery and integrated treatment, and reports leading publication of at least two national expert consensus statements annually and establishing multidisciplinary teams at Xizhimen and Tongzhou. It reports that many previously untreatable patients have become treatable. Team members edited Primary Retroperitoneal Tumors, Retroperitoneal Tumor Surgery, Retroperitoneal Tumors and Retroperitoneal Tumor, which the hospital describes as the field's first English monograph. They founded and held nine national retroperitoneal tumor conferences and established the Chinese Medical Association oncology branch's retroperitoneal tumor group, the Chinese Research Hospital Association committee for retroperitoneal and pelvic floor diseases, and the Beijing Medical Doctor Association's retroperitoneal tumor specialty branch.
