Department Highlights
The Department of Breast Surgery has refined its disciplinary development and established three prominent areas: early diagnosis and precision treatment of breast cancer, minimally invasive breast plastic and reconstructive surgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of benign breast diseases. On this basis, it has established relevant specialty clinics. Using young-onset breast cancer as a key focus, the department has taken the lead in implementing systematic treatment models including breast plastic surgery and ovarian function protection and fertility preservation, thereby further improving patients’ quality of life while achieving radical treatment of tumors. Early diagnosis and precision treatment of breast cancer include the use of advanced imaging diagnostic technologies such as TOMO and MRI to detect breast lesions at an early stage and provide precise surgical treatment and precise systemic treatment. Upholding the concept that “less is more,” the department performs a series of procedures, including breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy, autologous fat transplantation, and immediate reconstruction after tumor surgery, reducing trauma while curing disease. In accordance with domestic and international diagnosis and treatment guidelines and expert consensus, multidisciplinary medical experts conduct regular discussions to implement standardized, comprehensive, and individualized treatment. The department has accumulated substantial experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy-associated breast cancer and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, providing patients with professional guidance and subsequent medical services related to oncofertility and genetic counseling. Minimally invasive breast cosmetic surgery is a major highlight of the department. Integrating plastic and reconstructive techniques with surgical techniques, it keeps pace with medical advances, social development, and individual needs to serve patients. The diagnosis and treatment of benign breast diseases focus on the management of common conditions such as lactational mastitis, nipple discharge, and mammary hyperplasia. The department has accumulated considerable experience in these areas, ensuring that cases are neither missed nor misdiagnosed.
Teaching
The Department of Breast Surgery is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in surgery and undertakes postgraduate clinical teaching for Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. Each year, it conducts national continuing education courses to advance breast disease diagnosis and treatment skills and concepts among fellow physicians. The department accepts visiting physicians for further training, provides a demonstrative role in actual clinical work, and enhances their professional skills and professional competence.
