Introduction to Intensive Care Rehabilitation Ward 4
(2025.3)
The core cultural philosophy of our department is: “Standing guard 24 hours a day, extending the journey of life, and fulfilling the responsibility of intensive-care physicians.” By combining advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment and techniques, we conduct continuous, dynamic qualitative and quantitative assessments of patients’ conditions. Through effective interventions, we provide patients undergoing intensive rehabilitation with comprehensive cardiac, pulmonary, and cerebral functional rehabilitation, as well as standardized, high-quality life support, thereby improving their quality of survival.
Intensive Care Rehabilitation Ward 4 has 35 beds and currently has 4 physicians: 1 deputy chief physician, 1 attending physician, and 2 resident physicians, as well as 7 nurses. Sun Hong, Deputy Chief Physician and PhD, is currently the head of Intensive Care Rehabilitation Ward 4 of the Hanan Branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, and director of the National Key Specialty Cultivation Project. He is a youth member of the 8th Committee of the Professional Committee of Deficiency Syndromes and Geriatrics of the China Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine; a youth member of the Formulae Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine; Deputy Chair of the Intensive Care Professional Committee of the Heilongjiang Longjiang Medical School; and Vice President of the General Practice Branch of the Heilongjiang Ethnic Medicine Association. He has participated in 2 national emergency research special projects, led and participated in more than 10 department- or bureau-level projects, participated in the publication of 5 SCI papers and more than 10 papers in core journals, and co-edited more than 10 books. He is a member of the Key Laboratory for the Prevention and Treatment of Major Brain Diseases with Combined Acupuncture and Medication. As a provincial-level Chinese medicine expert, he participated in the rescue of major national emergencies and received high praise and commendation from the Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Under Director Sun Hong’s leadership, all medical staff of the department work together and strive for progress. The team’s clinical diagnostic and treatment technology and scientific research capability are both at an advanced national level in intensive rehabilitation.
The department currently has 7 domestically manufactured Mindray ventilators, 3 high-flow devices, 1 blood-gas analyzer, 1 multifunctional defibrillator, 1 mild-hypothermia treatment device, 12 monitors, 11 infusion pumps, and other instruments and equipment. Each monitored hospital bed is equipped with a complete equipment rail or functional column, providing electricity, oxygen, compressed air, negative-pressure suction, and other support. Each bed has a bedside monitoring system for basic vital-sign monitoring, including ECG, pulse oxygen saturation, and non-invasive blood pressure. Each bed is equipped with an infusion pump and a syringe pump. The department also has a fiberoptic bronchoscope and a cardiopulmonary resuscitation emergency equipment cart.
Conditions treated in Intensive Care Rehabilitation Ward 4:
1. Cerebrovascular disease and related complications, such as hemiplegia, dysphagia, speech impairment, and urinary or fecal dysfunction, treated with acupuncture combined with modern rehabilitation methods;
2. Patients with severe cerebrovascular disease complicated by pulmonary infection and tracheotomy: heat-clearing and phlegm-resolving, qi-supporting and constitution-strengthening Chinese medicines are combined with cross-electroacupuncture at the neck to remodel the cough reflex and establish a pulmonary rehabilitation system, enabling successful decannulation;
3. Patients with severe cerebrovascular disease complicated by respiratory failure and patients with severe pneumonia: advanced life support such as ventilator-assisted breathing is provided, together with acupuncture and medication, enabling successful ventilator weaning;
4. Nervous-system diseases complicated by respiratory failure, such as Guillain–Barré syndrome with respiratory failure: ventilator-assisted breathing and acupuncture rehabilitation are used to achieve successful ventilator weaning;
5. Acute or chronic heart failure: pattern-based Chinese medicine combined with Western medical treatment is used, with significant efficacy;
6. Patients with various high-risk factors and potential life-threatening conditions in whom close ICU monitoring and timely effective treatment may reduce the risk of death.
The department currently possesses the theories and skills required for rehabilitation of patients undergoing intensive rehabilitation and for monitoring and supporting the functions of vital organs and systems, including:
1. Scalp acupuncture combined with syndrome-based acupoint selection for post-stroke limb motor dysfunction and post-stroke urinary and fecal dysfunction; “cross-electroacupuncture at the neck” for post-stroke dysphagia; 2. Rescue and treatment of multiple-organ failure; 3. Diagnosis and treatment of all types of shock, with particular expertise in septic shock; 4. Treatment of respiratory failure caused by various conditions and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome; 5. Rescue and treatment of central nervous system dysfunction; 6. Gastrointestinal dysfunction and gastrointestinal bleeding; 7. Severe endocrine and metabolic disorders; 8. Water-electrolyte and acid–base disorders; 9. Enteral and parenteral nutritional support; 10. Sedation and analgesia; 11. Severe infection, sepsis, systemic inflammatory response, encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, brainstem encephalitis, and viral encephalitis; 12. Immune dysfunction.
The department can independently perform the following monitoring and support procedures:
1. Establishment and management of an artificial airway; 2. Lung-protective mechanical ventilation for ARDS and prone-positioning techniques; 3. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage; 4. Deep venous and arterial puncture and catheter placement; 5. Hemodynamic monitoring; 6. Electrical cardioversion and cardiac defibrillation; 7. Continuous renal replacement therapy and hemodialysis; 8. Point-of-care critical-care ultrasound, hemodynamic monitoring, rapid assessment of cardiac, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal function, and determination of vascular patency and blood flow; 9. Airway-clearance techniques.
Since its establishment, the department has successfully treated many patients requiring intensive rehabilitation and saved the lives of numerous critically ill patients. Intensive Care Rehabilitation Ward 4 of the Hanan Branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine is willing to safeguard your life with advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies.
