Neurosurgery Department (Brain Surgery)
The Department of Neurosurgery of Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital was founded in the 1970s. The department has advanced medical equipment (including a 256-slice Philips spiral CT, a 3.0T MRI, a 1.5T MRI, Leica and ZEISS operating microscopes, hypothermia therapy devices, and Siemens and GE DSA systems) and a well-structured staff (more than 20 professional medical and nursing personnel, including 2 chief physicians and 1 associate chief physician, and 5 with master's degrees), with 29 inpatient beds, of which 9 are neurosurgical intensive care beds and 20 are general beds. Scope of diagnosis and treatment: treatment of common neurosurgical diseases, mainly including: 1. Cerebrovascular diseases (hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, carotid artery stenosis, vertebral artery stenosis, intracranial aneurysm, intracranial vascular malformation, carotid-cavernous fistula, dural arteriovenous fistula, intracranial venous sinus thrombosis, etc.); 2. Brain tumors (pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, Rathke cleft cyst, meningioma, glioma, vestibular schwannoma, brain metastases, hemangioblastoma, etc.); 3. Brain trauma (cerebral contusion and laceration, acute epidural hematoma, acute subdural hematoma, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, skull base fracture, diffuse axonal injury, chronic subdural hematoma, etc.); 4. Common spinal cord tumors and vascular diseases (spinal nerve sheath tumors, ependymoma, vascular malformations, arteriovenous fistulas, etc.); 5. Diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system tuberculosis (brain tuberculoma, spinal tuberculosis, ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery, etc.). In 2001 the department was the first in the province to carry out interventional diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, including total cerebral angiography, intracranial aneurysm embolization, embolization of brain arteriovenous malformations, intracranial arterial thrombectomy and carotid artery stent placement, with a high surgical success rate, few complications and marked efficacy, reaching the leading level in the province. To date the department has successfully performed several hundred highly difficult operations, including resection of pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, Rathke cleft cysts, meningiomas, gliomas, acoustic neuromas, brain metastases and hemangioblastomas; vascular surgery including cerebral aneurysm clipping, resection of cerebral arteriovenous malformations and extracranial-intracranial bypass; and operations for common intraspinal diseases such as intraspinal tumors, spinal vascular malformations and arteriovenous fistulas. While achieving remarkable results, it has also won unanimous praise from patients. Research directions of the department: 1. Minimally invasive treatment of cerebrovascular diseases (interventional treatment of aneurysms, stent placement for carotid artery stenosis, stereotactic puncture for spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage); 2. Thrombolysis and thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke; 3. Integrated Chinese-Western medicine treatment of cerebrovascular diseases; 4. Diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system tuberculosis; 5. Integrated Chinese-Western medicine treatment of neurological diseases.
