Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery of Hangzhou First People’s Hospital, Affiliated to Westlake University School of Medicine, adheres to the philosophy of deep multidimensional integration of “clinical diagnosis and treatment, basic research, technological innovation, and humanistic care.” With minimally invasive treatment of cranial nerve disorders and cerebrovascular diseases and neuromodulation for functional disorders as its core areas of focus, the department has developed distinctive features and prominent strengths.
The department has a strong, well-structured talent team. Its physician team comprises 22 members, including 7 with senior professional titles and 7 with associate senior titles; more than 60% hold doctoral degrees. Four hold positions in national-level academic organizations, and four have received provincial- or municipal-level talent designations. The department has established a talent system characterized by “integrated recruitment and development, tiered progression, and internationalization.”
The department has strong clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities. It has 91 operational beds and performs approximately 1,800-plus surgeries annually. Grade IV surgeries account for more than 60%, while minimally invasive surgeries account for nearly 50%. Its areas of strength include minimally invasive treatment of cranial nerve disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm; neurointerventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysms; minimally invasive treatment of neuro-oncological conditions; and neuromodulation for functional disorders. Several key monitored surgical procedures have consistently ranked among the top 10 in the province. The department’s clinical services have a broad reach, with patients from outside the Hangzhou area and from outside the province accounting for 58%. It has also established multiple national-level platforms, including an Advanced Stroke Center.
Research and innovation have yielded abundant results. Over the past 5 years, the department has published more than 30 SCI papers, including 6 classified in Zone 1 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It has undertaken 16 research projects at various levels, including Jianbing Lingyan projects, and obtained more than 20 international and national invention patents as well as utility model patents, with multiple patented achievements translated into applications. It has led or participated in nearly 20 GCP and IIT projects and contributed to the formulation of more than 10 expert consensus statements in neurosurgery.
Together with Westlake University School of Medicine, the department has established a joint laboratory to advance the interdisciplinary integration of “medicine + artificial intelligence/new materials.” As a national neurosurgery residency training base, it trains 4–6 master’s and doctoral students annually, regularly organizes national- and provincial-level continuing education programs, and continues to lead the development of regional neurosurgery.
