Medical Features 1. Use of interventional pulmonary technology for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases The department has the most advanced bronchoscopes currently available in the world and performs more than 3,000 bronchoscopic procedures annually, including bronchoscopic endotracheal intubation, bronchoalveolar lavage, brushing examination, forceps lung biopsy, cryobiopsy, TBNA, EBUS-TBNA, EBUS-GS-TBLB, stent implantation and removal for benign and malignant airway stenosis (metal stents and silicone stents), semi-flexible thoracoscopy for diagnosis and treatment, thermal ablation (high-frequency electrocautery, APC, and laser), cryotherapy, foreign-body removal, navigation-system procedures, balloon dilation, lung-volume-reduction surgery, and other techniques. Before interventional respiratory treatment After interventional respiratory treatment 2. Precision diagnosis and treatment of complex pulmonary infections Relying on its precision laboratory, the department uses respiratory intervention as a means and adopts advanced etiological testing methods, including multiplex PCR and high-throughput sequencing, to achieve efficient, rapid, and precise diagnosis and treatment of complex infections, significantly improving the treatment level for fever of unknown origin, severe pneumonia, and sepsis. It admits more than approximately 1,500 patients with pulmonary infections annually, with a treatment improvement rate of 96%; the oldest patient was 104 years old. The 104-year-old patient improved, was discharged, and presented a congratulatory banner 3. Treatment of respiratory critical illness The department mainly admits and treats respiratory failure caused by various conditions, including severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, pleural diseases, pulmonary tumors, interstitial lung diseases, and chronic airflow diseases. Its treatment success rate is high, and it has also accumulated extensive experience in treating highly pathogenic avian influenza and novel coronavirus infection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine admitted a cumulative total of more than 200 confirmed and suspected cases within the hospital; none progressed to critical illness, none died, and no medical or nursing staff became infected. All members of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine are well trained and capable of rescuing patients with acute and critical conditions such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, airway asphyxia, massive hemoptysis, and shock. Physicians with senior professional titles account for 75% of the department’s physicians. The department is fully equipped with rescue equipment, including bronchoscopes, ventilators, defibrillators, ECG monitoring, and endotracheal intubation equipment; the rescue success rate for critically ill patients is above 99%. A severe COVID-19 case improved and was discharged 4. Closed-loop diagnosis and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases The department is one of the first batch of national single-specialty respiratory rehabilitation bases. It currently has 5 full-time physicians/technicians specializing in respiratory rehabilitation treatment and can provide bedside rehabilitation treatment. It has established a complete set of rehabilitation treatment plans for chronic respiratory diseases such as pneumonia combined with tracheotomy, bronchiectasis with copious sputum production, and dyspnea due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These include abdominal breathing training, sputum-clearance device training, cycle-ergometer testing, phrenic-nerve electrical stimulation, traditional Chinese medicine herbal packs, ultrasound drug delivery, three-ball breathing training, manual treatment for upward elevation of the diaphragm, and other methods. These measures assist patients with respiratory failure in successfully weaning from ventilators, improve health-related quality of life, improve exercise endurance, reduce readmission rates, and reduce the number of acute exacerbations of COPD. 5. Pulmonary function testing Pulmonary function testing is one of the most important examinations for diagnosing respiratory diseases, especially for the diagnosis of chronic pulmonary diseases and the evaluation of treatment efficacy and prognosis. The State Council clearly included pulmonary function testing as a routine physical examination item in the Healthy China 13th Five-Year Plan. The department began pulmonary function testing in 2008 and introduced 3 advanced pulmonary function instruments and 1 exhaled nitric oxide testing instrument. To date, it has completed nearly 50,000 examinations, and more than 95% of pulmonary function reports have reached the A-grade standard, earning recognition from peers. 6. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered diseases Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is mainly manifested by snoring accompanied by sleep apnea, as well as daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and decreased memory. It is an independent risk factor for hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, arrhythmia, heart failure, stroke, and other diseases, and is closely related to resistant hypertension and insulin dependence. During the ten years since the Respiratory Sleep Center of Guangdong Second Provincial People's Hospital was established, it has introduced high-end polysomnography monitoring devices such as the US-made Embla system and has carried out more than 1,000 cumulative cases of sleep monitoring and titration treatment, significantly improving patients’ clinical symptoms.
