Dade Road Main Hospital – Laboratory Department

【Overview】 The Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Dade Road General Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in February 1954. It is now the General Hospital Laboratory Department under the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2005, it became one of the first comprehensive medical laboratories in China to obtain ISO 15189 medical laboratory accreditation. In 2018, it was awarded the national title of “Youth Civilization Unit.” In 2019, it was recognized as a high-level clinical key specialty of Guangdong Province. In 2021, it became the Guangdong Provincial Regional Center of the National Office for Ageing’s medical alliance for elderly chronic diseases (laboratory medicine). It is a demonstration unit of the Guangdong Provincial Clinical Laboratory Quality Control Center and a training unit for COVID-19 nucleic acid testing in Guangdong Province. At present, the department has 61 staff members, including 10 doctors (3 postdoctoral researchers) and 29 master’s degree holders; 6 senior professional title holders and 17 associate senior professional title holders; 4 master’s supervisors; 4 top-tier talents and 7 “Chaoyang Talents.” It is a high-level laboratory technical service team with solid foundational knowledge, strong technical capabilities, a strong service-oriented ethos, and a well-structured talent echelon.

【Department Features】 1. In 2005, the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Dade Road General Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine passed ISO 15189 medical laboratory accreditation. It was the first comprehensive laboratory department in China to pass ISO 15189 medical laboratory accreditation. It currently has 202 accredited items, and its test results are mutually recognized by more than 90 countries and economies worldwide.

2. The department places great emphasis on professional development and has strong medical capabilities. It comprises the specialties of emergency laboratory testing, clinical body-fluid testing, clinical hematology testing, clinical biochemical testing, clinical immunology testing, clinical microbiology testing, clinical molecular diagnostic testing, clinical chromosome testing, and others, and performs more than 600 testing items. The department is equipped with a Roche biochemical and immunoassay automation line; a Johnson & Johnson Vitros 4600 dry chemistry analyzer; a Rayto ABL820 blood-gas analyzer; a Siemens Centaur XPT chemiluminescence analyzer; a Siemens BNII specific-protein analyzer; Premier Hb9210 and Sebia Capilarys 2FP fully automated glycated hemoglobin analyzers; Sysmex XN hematology analyzers; a Mindray CLA-8000 hematology automation line; a Stago coagulation analyzer; a KOBOLD urine sediment analysis workstation; a Wondfo stool analysis workstation; a PuliSheng hemorheology analyzer; a Bio-Rad Variant II hemoglobin analyzer; a TEST-1 erythrocyte sedimentation analyzer; an SCA semen analysis workstation; and a ChemWell BRED 2900 seminal-plasma biochemical analyzer; a VITEK-2 fully automated microbiology analysis system; a 3D blood culture system; and a bioMérieux VITEK MS mass spectrometer; a Phadia 250 fully automated immunofluorescence analyzer; a BeeBlot fully automated enzyme immunoassay analysis system (TECAN + Siemens); a Mindray CL-2000i chemiluminescence analyzer; a YHLO iFlash 3000h chemiluminescence analyzer; an Abbott i2000 chemiluminescence analyzer; an Autobio A2000 fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer; a EUROIMMUN Euroblot one fully automated immunoblot analyzer; a Euroblot masterII blot analyzer; a HELMED automated immunofluorescence processor; and an Athena flow-fluorescence bead-array analyzer; a Bio-Rad (USA) droplet digital PCR instrument; ABI 7500 real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR systems; an ABI QuantStudio Dx real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR system; and a Roche LightCycler 480 real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR system; three high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry systems: AB SCIEX 5500, Waters TQ-S, and Q Exactive Plus Orbitrap; a BD FACS Canto II flow cytometer; and nearly 200 other large instruments and items of equipment. These resources enable the department to provide accurate and timely laboratory reports for clinical services.

3. The department has developed its “Green Leaf” culture, uses the national “Youth Civilization Unit” as its platform and lean management as its means of improving service quality, and has established multiple communication channels and methods to understand clinical needs and feedback, including “police-box-style” proactive consultation services, clinical/patient satisfaction surveys, regular clinical surveys, clinical education and clinical rounds, consultations and case discussions, regular training for medical and nursing staff, and the establishment of WeChat work liaison groups for various clinical specialties. It has also established the “Green Leaf” Volunteer Service Team and launched the activity “I Do Practical Things for the People—Laboratory Physicians Teach You How to Read Laboratory Reports.” The implementation of these measures has been welcomed and highly praised by clinicians and patients, helping the department become a laboratory department that “understands both doctors and patients.” It has received the hospital’s “Service Quality Cup” title for many consecutive years.

4. The department attaches importance to the diversified development of its employees and has cultivated successive groups of outstanding professionals. Through multiple levels, channels, and methods tailored to each individual, it provides every employee with learning opportunities, standardizes and institutionalizes professional learning, and regularly organizes professional study activities. The department currently has 1 chief assessor and 5 assessors of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment. It has 4 hospital top-tier talents and 7 “Chaoyang Talents.” Several experts serve as editorial board members or peer reviewers for professional journals including Spandidos Publications, Chinese Journal of Laboratory Medicine, Chinese Journal of Microbiology and Immunology, Journal of Clinical Laboratory, Journal of Southern Medical University, International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research, and Chinese Journal of Microcirculation. An academic talent echelon with a relatively rational structure has been initially established.

5. The department has established fixed research directions and strong research capabilities. It has initially formed a research team whose main areas of focus are standardization of clinical laboratory testing; early laboratory diagnosis and pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease; construction of experimental diagnostic models for diseases; and the mechanisms of action of traditional Chinese medicine monomers in cardiovascular diseases. During the past five years, it has undertaken nearly 100 research projects at various levels, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, and municipal science and technology authorities. It has obtained 1 production approval from the National Medical Products Administration; 5 authorized national invention and utility-model patents; and has filed 3 invention patent applications. It has led the formulation of 5 national metrology standards and participated in formulating 13 national health standards; independently developed 9 national reference materials and participated in developing 1 international reference material; led the formulation of 1 local standard; served as chief editor or deputy chief editor of 5 monographs, chief editor or deputy chief editor of 2 textbooks, and contributed to 4 textbooks; published more than 200 papers in SCI-indexed or Chinese core journals; received 2 second prizes and 1 third prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 third prize of the Guangzhou Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It has received the “Innovation Cup” of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the honor of being among the top five departments in the hospital’s scientific research performance evaluation on multiple consecutive occasions.

6. The department undertakes classroom teaching for graduate students and undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine and laboratory medicine, with more than 10 principal classroom instructors. Its staff have served as chief editors, deputy chief editors, or contributors to multiple textbooks published by the People’s Medical Publishing House, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Press, and other publishers, including Fundamentals of Clinical Laboratory Medicine (People’s Medical Publishing House planning textbook), Clinical Basic Laboratory Testing Morphology (People’s Medical Publishing House featured planning textbook), Clinical Biochemical Testing Technology, and Experimental Guidance for Clinical Biochemical Testing Technology. They have also served as chief editors, deputy chief editors, or contributors to more than 10 monographs published by the People’s Medical Publishing House, Science and Technology Press, and other publishers, including Guidelines for Writing Quality System Documents for Medical Laboratories, Examples of Quality System Documents for Medical Laboratories, Requirements for Clinical Immunology Testing Technology, Requirements for Clinical Molecular Biology Testing Technology, Biochemical Testing Technology and Applications, Guidance Manual for Risk Management of Common Clinical Laboratory Items, Analysis of Typical Cases in Medical Laboratory Accreditation, and A Brief Analysis of Laws, Regulations, and Standards Related to Metrological Traceability in Laboratory Medicine. The department undertakes clinical internship and further-training supervision for trainees from major medical colleges and medical institutions throughout China. Each year, it supervises nearly 40 interns and more than 20 further-training students.
